Notes: The Chiefs’ offense sputters on the opening drive with dropped balls and penalties, and they punt the ball away. The Bears move the ball to midfield but the KC defense steps up and forces a punt. Kansas City’s second possession also results in a punt, and the Bears can fare no better. The Chiefs finally pick up a first down to end the quarter.
The Chiefs drive continues into the second quarter and culminates in a 30-yard touchdown pass to WR/TE Mikhael Ricks. The Bears then put the ball in the hands of RB Skip Hicks, who pounds the KC defense. The Chiefs line holds though, and Chicago settles for a field goal after reaching a first down on the 8-yard line. Todd Collins takes the helm for KC next, but a sack stops the drive. With QB Shane Matthews the Bears go three-and-out and punt the ball back to KC. Another sack of Collins nearly results in a lost fumble, but on the next play Collins throws an interception to Jerry Azumah. The Bears punt again with less than a minute left in the half, and the Chiefs kneel on the ball.
The Bears receive the kickoff to start the second half and Azumah returns the kick 51 yards. QB Jim Miller drives the offense but can’t make a first down, and KC takes over after a 17-yard punt. However, the Chiefs can’t move the ball either and R.W. McQuarters returns the ball 37 yards to the KC 31. Even with great field position the Bears can do nothing, but K Paul Edinger makes a 45-yard field goal to bring the Bears to within a point of the Chiefs. Aided by Chicago penalties and the power running of RB Frank Moreau, Kansas City moves the ball well and ends up kicking a 43-yard field goal. Penalties cripple the Bears’ next drive and they have to punt again. Bubby Brister takes over at QB for the Chiefs next, but the drive can’t get outside the 10-yard line. The Bears get great field position on the KC 37 after the punt.
As the fourth quarter begins the Bears’ drive stalls and they kick another field goal. The Chiefs start on their own 17, and with some good runs by Derrick Blaylock and some good catches by Snoop Minnis the almost overcome a slew of false starts. The 50-yard field goal attempt falls short and Chicago takes over on their own 41. They go three-and-out again but force the Chiefs to start on their own 7. An 82-yard touchdown pass to Minnis is called back by offsetting penalties, but the Chiefs move the chains and hold on for the win.
