Notes: The Chiefs kick a field goal on their opening drive, doubling their point total on opening drives for the year. The Bengals strike back with a touchdown run by RB Ickey Woods, taking a 7-3 lead. On KC’s next drive they move the ball well with some great catches by their receivers and backs, but the drive stalls and K Nick Lowery kicks another field goal.
As the second quarter opens the Bengals are on the move and QB Boomer Esiason tosses a deep pass into double coverage that S Deron Cherry picks off at the 8-yard line. The Chiefs turn it into a 22-play, 87-yard drive that eats up a whopping 12:12 and puts 3 points on the board. Cincinnati gets the ball back after the 2-minute warning and are able to move it at will, ending their drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by RB Stanley Wilson.
The Bengals get the ball to open the second half and move it well, but the drive stalls and they punt, pinning the Chiefs on their own 5-yard line. KC punts also and the Bengals get the ball at midfield. After the Chiefs almost stop the Cincinnati drive on the 5-yard line Esiason scrambles for a questionable touchdown, taking a 12-point lead. The Chiefs then give the ball to RB Christian Okoye, who rips a 45-yard run for the Chiefs’ longest rush of the season. A couple plays later QB Steve DeBerg finds WR Stephone Paige for a 17-yard touchdown pass. On the ensuing kickoff FB Stanford Jennings returns the kick 98 yards for a touchdown, fiving Cincinnati a 12-point lead again. The Chiefs go back on offense and eat up more clock time on the way to a 47-yard field goal.
The Bengals are driving again as the fourth quarter begins but the drive stalls at the KC 40. KC has to punt also, but Cincinnati can’t move the ball either, and this time CB Albert Lewis blocks the punt out of the end zone for a safety. After the free kick Kansas City starts at their own 35, and DeBerg puts together a great drive that, aided by a defensive pass interference call, results in a 1-yard Okoye touchdown plunge, tying the game with 1:11 to play. Cincinnati fumbles the kickoff return and Lewis falls on it, and with 6 seconds left Lowery kicks a 39-yard field goal to seal the victory.
The Chiefs snap a 5-game losing streak. It is only the 4th 100-yard rushing game by the Chiefs since 1981. Cincinnati comes into the game with the league’s best offense and best record, but ends up dropping their third road game in a row.
Thanks Brad!
