Notes: Kansas City
gets the ball after 0-6 Dallas fumbles during their first possession, and the
Chiefs make it pay off, blasting into the end zone with Okoye on an 8-play,
61-yard drive. Dallas
answers with a 63-yard rush from scrimmage for a touchdown, but it’s Kansas City that controls
the clock and leads at the end of the quarter when Okoye finds the end zone
again.
The KC defense clamps down in the second quarter,
frustrating QB Steve Walsh’s passing game and stopping the run. KC QB Steve DeBerg shows his excellence as a
quarterback, using play-action and long passes to augment the power of the
Chiefs rush. Dixon
keeps the Cowboys in the game with a 98-yard kick return for a touchdown, but
Nick Lowery tacks on a couple of field goals to keep Kansas City comfortably in the lead.
The Dallas
defense does a better job to start the second half, forcing KC to punt on their
opening drive. The offense sputters
under the pressure of the Chiefs defense, though, and Kansas City blocks the punt out of the back
of the end zone for a safety. DeBerg
comes out of the game with leg cramps and Pelluer comes in, and on his second series
carries the ball into the end zone himself.
Dallas
drives 71 yards to score a touchdown to open the fourth quarter. DeBerg comes back in to run the KC offense
after getting an IV bag of fluids, but he can’t get it done and the Chiefs punt
the ball away. Dallas
scores again when Walsh finds Folsom, but they run out of time and Kansas City runs the
clock down to seal the victory.
Christian Okoye sets a career high with 170 rushing yards,
and he sets a new Chiefs record with 33 carries.
