Notes:  The Chiefs, with a +70 turnover differential at home in the 1990s,  punt on their opening drive, but Neil Smith’s forced fumble and recovery give KC the ball back on Denver’s 35-yard line, and QB Steve Bono finds WR Webster Slaughter in the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown pass.

After the two teams trade punts to start the second quarter, KC digs out of first-and-20 to move 80 yards in 12 plays, capping the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run by Bono.  As the clock winds down and the Chiefs move into field goal range, C Tim Grunhard snaps the ball early, CB Ray Crockett rushes Bono and takes the ball away, then runs it the length of the field for a touchdown.  Denver trails by 7 at halftime.

In the third quarter, QB John Elway begins finding his receivers for larger gains, but the Chiefs defense holds them to a field goal.  The Chiefs kicker misses another field goal to keep the score 14-10, but with just under w minutes to go Elway, being chased by DE Darren Mickell, fumbles the ball and DE Vaughn Booker picks it up and runs it in for a touchdown.  The ensuing fake PAT/2PC attempt fails and KC has a 10-point lead.  Elway works his magic to find WR Mike Pritchard on a 4-yard touchdown pass, but KC holds on for the win, sweeping the AFC West and securing a first-round bye in the playoffs.  It’s the first season since 1968 the Chiefs have notched 12 wins.  With his sack of John Elway, Neil Smith notched the 67th sack of the season for the Chiefs.

Look for George Brett and Rush Limbaugh in the stands.
