Notes: In Kansas City’s first win
under head coach Gunther Cunningham, the Chiefs dominate the reigning Super
Bowl Champion Denver Broncos. Both
offenses sputter though the first quarter, but Denver gets on the board first with a 50-yard
Jason Elam field goal. The Broncos are
moving the ball again when S Jerome Woods intercepts Brian Griese, and the
Chiefs turn it into three points. KC
forces a Denver
punt on the next series, and with 1:14 remaining in the half they move
downfield and put up another field goal as time expires.
In the second half, Chris Dishman pounces on a Terrell Davis
fumble during Denver’s
opening drive, then QB Elvis Grbac hits WR Derrick Alexander on a 54-yard pass
play. Four plays later, T-Rich carries
the ball into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. When Denver
gets the ball back, LB Derrick Thomas knocks it out of Griese’s hand and
recovers the fumble. The Chiefs pull
another three points out of the turnover for a 16-3 lead. DT Trevor Pryce picks off Grbac on the KC
34-yard line as Grbac is hit and Denver
capitalizes by putting RB Terrell Davis in the end zone. The Chiefs stay ahead by running 9-play,
66-yard drive that culminates in a Bam Morris touchdown run from the 5-yard
line.
Denver
pulls Griese and puts in Bubby Brister in the fourth quarter, but the result is
the same. CB Eric Warfield comes up with
an interception and the Chiefs turn it into a field goal, solidifying their win
and sending Denver
to 0-2 to start the season.
Kansas City FB Kimble Anders has his first 100-yard game. WR Derrick Alexander had a huge game with 6
catches for 117 yards, including two big ones in front of former Chiefs Safety
Dale Carter, who signed with the Broncos as a free agent. An illegal contact call also went against
Carter, wiping out a sack on Grbac.
