Notes:  Kansas City forces a punt on Detroit’s first possession, but their own drive fails when QB Elvis Grbac can’t hit WR Andre Rison on a deep route.  He finally connects with TE Tony Gonzalez late in the quarter on a 15-yard touchdown pass.

The Lions defense stiffens in the second quarter, holding the KC offense long enough to tie the game on a run by RB Sedrick Irvin.  The Chiefs answer by turning to the ground game.  A huge run by RB Donnell Bennett – his career long – sets up the touchdown scamper by RB Rashaan Shehee.  K Pete Stoyanovich tacks on three points with one second remaining in the half, and Kansas City heads to the locker room leading 17-7.

Elvis continues to struggle in the third quarter, but after the KC defense holds the Lions at bay, WR Joe Horn makes a 25-yard touchdown reception to put the Chiefs ahead for good.  Detroit fights back with a fast and furious attack that makes good use of their running backs and finishes in the end zone with a short pass from QB Charlie Batch to TE Walter Rasby, but the two-point conversion fails and the Lions trail 24-13.  (On replay, it’s obvious Rasby did not have possession of the ball, but the play goes unchallenged.)

Detroits first possession in the fourth quarter ends with a CB Chris Dishman interception, and the Chiefs capitalize by giving it to Bennett and letting him pound it into the end zone.  After the Chiefs pick off Batch again, then punt it away, Detroit manages a touchdown on a 35-yard pass to RB Ron Rivers.  The resulting two-point conversion attempt succeeds, and the Lions trail by 10.  Kansas City recovers the onside kick and they are able to run out the clock, preserving the win and boosting head coach Gunther Cunningham’s record to 2-1.

The revered Hank Stram is on the Chiefs sideline for this game.
