Notes: WR J.T. Smith gives the Chiefs great field position on the opening kickoff, but QB Bill Kenney can’t hit his receivers and they go three-and-out. After several more punts by both teams and a missed field goal by the Giants, S Deron Cherry intercepts QB Phil Simms and gives the Chiefs good field position. Kenney finally finds a receiver, hitting WR Carlos Carson for 56 yards and setting the Chiefs up on the Giants 1 yard line. After three attempts to put it in the end zone, including two incomplete passes, the Chiefs try for a field goal. P Jim Arnold botches the placement, though, and the Chiefs are held scoreless.
The Chiefs manage to score first despite their offensive woes with a 26-yard touchdown pass to WR Stephone Paige after starting at the Giants’ 40. The lead doesn’t last for long, though, as Simms leads a masterful drive downfield that culminates in a 1-yard plunge by RB Rob Carpenter to tie the game. KC gets the ball back and is moving well when DB Bill Currier picks off Kenney and kills the drive, but CB Kevin Ross steals the ball back when Simms throws the ball behind his receiver. The Chiefs keep control this time and tack on a field goal by K Nick Lowery. With 45 seconds left in the first half CB Albert Lewis picks off another Simms pass and runs it back to the Giants 8-yard line. On the next play Kenney hits TE Willie Scott for a touchdown, putting KC up by 10.
The Giants take the first possession of the second half and score on another short plunge by Carpenter. The Chiefs are unable to get into scoring range for the remainder of the quarter, but they also hold the Giants scoreless. At the end of the third quarter the Giants gamble on fourth down and come up short, turning the ball over to the Chiefs.
The Chiefs put up 3 more points on a 52-yard Lowery field goal, and after another Giants punt they score again, this time on a 34-yard touchdown pass to Carson. The Giants get the ball back and come alive, quickly moving the ball downfield and into the end zone with a 22-yard pass to WR Bobby Johnson. The Chiefs can’t manage any offense on their next possession and they punt the ball with 5:03 remaining in the game. Simms again quickly moves his team into scoring range and connects with TE Zeke Mowatt on a 4-yard touchdown toss. KC gets the ball back with 2:12 on the clock, but after a couple of decent completions by receivers RB Theotis Brown gives up the ball after making a good catch and the Giants recover. The G-men then run out the clock for the victory.
