Notes: The Chiefs
force a punt on Washington’s opening drive, then go on to score 12 unanswered
points on the foot of Nick Lowery - the first field goal sails a club record 58
yards! The Chiefs’ strong defense and
lackluster offense, coupled with Washington’s
good run defense, make this a kicker’s game for the first thirty minutes. KC moves well against the defending Super
Bowl champions, though, and they go into the locker room at halftime with the
lead.
Washington
starts the second half with a better defense, but still can’t get anything done
on offense. Dean’s interception in KC
territory leads to a Redskins field goal, sparking the offense somewhat. A second interception on the next KC
possession leads to a Washington
rushing TD, and the slaughter begins. The
Chiefs’ poor tackling allows Riggins to gain a lot of ground, while Washington’s stiff
defense prevents KC from putting any more points on the board - QB Bill Kenney
is sacked 7 times in the second half. The
Redskins live up to their champion title, mauling the Chiefs in RFK Stadium.
Thanks Tim!
