Notes: The Raiders, playing without the injured RB Marcus Allen, come into Arrowhead Stadium on Chiefs Alumni Day and snap KC’s 5-game Arrowhead winning streak, their longest in franchise history. KC forces the Raiders to go three-and-out on their opening drive, then punter Ray Guy fumbles the snap and the Chiefs get the ball on the LA 12. They are unable to get in the end zone, though, and K Nick Lowery puts up three points. On LA’s next possession, QB Marc Wilson fumbles the snap and LB Dino Hackett recovers the ball, giving the Chiefs possession on the LA 34. 3 plays later RB Boyce Green runs it in from the 18.
KC forces a third punt in the first quarter, then moves the ball all the way to the LA 1 (with the help of a defensive pass interference call), where QB Todd Blackledge tosses to TE Paul Coffman for a touchdown and the 17-point lead. Blackledge was the second quarterback taken in the landmark 1983 draft (after John Elway), and still on the board were Dan Marino (MIA), Jim Kelly (BUF), Tony Eason (NE) and Ken O’Brien (NYJ).
The rest of the day’s scoring belonged to the Raiders, as they scored 24 unanswered points. Considering how many passes the Raiders receivers dropped, the score should have been much more lopsided. The first LA score was a 12-yard toss to WR Dokie Williams, who had one foot out of bounds as he came down with the pass. The touchdown was allowed to stand, however, as the officials inexplicably failed to relay the ruling to the field.
A big brawl breaks out at the end of the second quarter, with DE Greg Townsend ripping off G Brad Budde’s helmet and throwing him to the ground, that results in a personal foul penalty against DE Howie Long. On the subsequent play another short fight breaks out, resulting in S Vann Mcelroy getting ejected for punching RB Jeff Smith after the tackle.
The final LA touchdown comes when RB Napoleon McCallum runs it in from the KC 12. QB Jim Plunkett comes in for the injured Marc Wilson and leads the Raiders to the go-ahead touchdown, an 18-yard pass to WR Jessie Hester. The Raiders scored partly due to another poor call on the part of the replay officials, who call TE Todd Christensen in on a long pass play when his knee was clearly out of bounds.
QB Bill Kenney comes in for the injured Todd “Sackledge” in the fourth quarter and takes a sack, hands off a running play, then throws an incomplete pass for his first action of the season.
This was the first game since 1979 to be sold out in time for local television coverage (72 hours prior.)
