Notes:  The Chargers come into Kansas City with the NFL’s top-rated offense, averaging 433 yards per game.  KC QB Todd Blackledge gets the start and quickly moves the Chiefs downfield.  FB Ken Lacy catches the San Diego defense guessing and rumbles 24 yards for a touchdown.  The Chiefs then stop San Diego on their first drive and the Bolts settle for a Benny Ricardo (called up to substitute for Rolf Bernischke) field goal.  On Kansas City’s ensuing drive they move the ball decisively downfield, but a penalty moves them back to 3rd-and-16 and Blackledge throws an interception to S Don Gregor.  The Chiefs get it back, though, when QB Dan Fouts (who passes the 32,000 career passing yards mark) returns the favor and throws an interception to CB Greg Hill.  The Chiefs then take the ball to the SD 5 and kick a field goal.

San Diego is driving as the second quarter begins, but the KC defense holds them to a field goal.  The remainder of the quarter is a lot of back-and-forth with the halftime score stuck at 10-3.

The Charges get the ball first in the second half but cannot produce.  The Chiefs also have to punt as San Diego steps up their level of physicality.  QB Bill Kenney comes in and leads the Chiefs to the doorstep of the SD end zone, but CB Gill Byrd steps in, picks off a pass, and returns it 99 yards for a touchdown.  The Chiefs come right back and score on an 18-yard touchdown pass to WR Stephone Paige, retaking the lead.

San Diego is again driving as the fourth quarter opens, and after a fumble scare they move the ball to the KC 7.  The Chiefs defense steps up and sacks Fouts, forcing a fumble that the Chiefs recover.  KC tacks on 2 more touchdowns to put the game out of reach.
