Notes:  QB Todd Blackledge starts the game for KC, and despite San Diego (1-5) taking penalties he is unable to move the ball on the opening drive.  QB Dan Fouts also has problems as he is put into a 2-20 hole, and the Chiefs block the ensuing punt to start their next drive on the San Diego 45.

On the next play Blackledge finds WR Stephone Paige for a 45-yard touchdown pass, and the Chiefs take a 7-point lead.  On San Diego’s next drive, a Chiefs offside penalty gives the Chargers the first down on a fourth-and-one on the KC 25.  2 plays later Fouts hits RB Gary Anderson for a 7-yard touchdown, capping a 14-play, 75-yard drive.

In the second quarter, as Fouts is driving the Chargers downfield S Lloyd Burruss steps in front of the receiver at the KC 20 and picks off the pass, taking the ball out to the 38.  The Chiefs have to punt, though, and when the Chargers get the ball back Burruss again picks off Fouts, this time running it 56 yards for the touchdown.  On the ensuing kickoff, RB Buford McGee stumbles, falls, and fumbles the ball away on the 20-yard line, and CB Kevin Ross scoops it up and runs it in for another touchdown, the Chiefs’ second in a 12 second span.  Warpaint gallops!

San Diego strikes back quickly, and officials rule that McGee crosses the goal line in mid-air as LB Dino Hackett blocked him.  After an ineffective offensive series and a KC punt, Burruss intercepts Fouts for the third time and runs it back 47 yards for a touchdown.  The Chargers’ next drive ends in a field goal, but when Kansas City gets the ball back DE Leslie O’Neal intercepts Blackledge at the 5 and steps in the end zone for a touchdown, San Diego’s second score in 10 seconds.  Blackledge draws a chorus of boos as he leaves the field, and again when he comes back out after the kickoff to finish the first half.

QB Bill Kenney starts the second half for the Chiefs, and on the second play of their first possession he finds Paige in the front corner of the end zone for a touchdown.  Mark Herrmann, in for the concussed Dan Fouts, leads his team 90 yards to a touchdown, Anderson’s second of the game.

The Chargers drive again after another KC punt and put up a field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter to narrow KC’s lead to 1 point.  The Chiefs then turn on their offense, moving 80 yards in 7 plays.  RB Boyce Green carries it the last yard through a crowd for the touchdown.  K Nick Lowery then kicks his 100th consecutive point-after to give Kansas City the 8-point lead.

On San Diego’s next possession, CB Albert Lewis picks off Herrmann at the 1-yard line, his first interception of the year and San Diego’s fifth turnover of the game.  The Chiefs are unable to get the ball out of their end of the field, and they punt the ball to the 34-yard line.  The Chargers score easily, with Anderson catching a 12-yard touchdown pass to close within a point again.

The Chiefs hold on for the win, outscoring the Chargers in the last two games 80-75.
