Notes: Joe Montana’s
first pass of the game was picked off, Marcus Allen fumbled on the Chiefs’ next
possession, and after the Chargers scored on the first play of the second
quarter,
“The game today was not won by talent,” Chiefs coach Marty Schottenheimer said afterward. “It was not won by coaching, certainly. It was won by people with determination. Something in their hearts said, ‘I am not going to be denied.’”
While the offense methodically worked the Chiefs back into the game, the defense shut down the Chargers. Twice in the fourth quarter the Chargers were stopped short of scoring.
“There was no alarm on the sideline,” Chiefs running back Marcus Allen said of the early 17-0 deficit. “Nobody was worried. There’s no question that having that experience, to be in adverse conditions and come back to win, is a great teacher.” Allen rushed for just 16 yards, but scored the Chiefs’ first touchdown in the second quarter. Joe Montana threw for 168 yards and two touchdowns.
“I felt confident we could get back in it,” Schottenheimer continued. “I wasn’t convinced we could get it all back right away, but that really wasn’t the purpose.”
The victory put the Chiefs at 10-4 and in first place in the AFC West.
Thanks Ryan!
