Notes: The Seahawks
come into Arrowhead to meet the Chiefs’ 12th-ranked defense. Seattle
reaches midfield on their opening drive, but a big play by LB Donnie Edwards
forces a punt. The Chiefs then take it
the other direction, but the Seattle
defense gets after QB Elvis Grbac and they settle for a field goal. Eric Warfield intercepts Jon Kitna, the
top-rated quarterback in the AFC, but the drive stalls and KC punts.
Seattle
is driving as the second quarter opens, and with a lot of rushing and some
accurate passing by Kitna they are able to push into the end zone. In return, the Chiefs rushing game grinds the
Seattle defense
into submission and RB Donnell Bennett finds the end zone to retake the
lead. More Kitna passing leads to
another Seattle TD. The Chiefs get the
ball back with 1:40 left in the half. On
the first play of the drive Seattle recovers a
Rashaan Shehee fumble, but Kitna fumbles on the first Seattle
play and Kansas City
recovers. The Chiefs can only manage a
field goal and go into halftime trailing by a point.
Kansas City
gets the ball to start the second half and they have pretty good success
driving; however, they bog down at midfield and have to punt. A stupid mistake by Eric Warfield gives the
‘Hawks great field position, but the drive only stays alive because of
penalties on KC. Seattle has to settl
for a field goal, though, as the KC defense heats up. After trading punts, the Seahawks trap the
Chiefs deep in their own territory and force another punt. This time the Seahawks start at the KC 42,
and finish by hitting Sean Dawkins for a 45-yard pass play.
The Chiefs have the ball again early in the fourth quarter,
but they go 3-and-out for the fourth consecutive series. The defense stays motivated, though, and KC soon
has the ball back. The Chiefs are
finally able to get something going by relying less on Grbac’s arm and more on
the KC running backs. Bennett walks into
the end zone, but the failed two-point conversion, which depended on Elvis,
holds the gain to 6 points. Chester
McGlockton forces the punt on Seattle’s
next possession when he blocks a third down pass, but the Chiefs fail again to
make the passing game work. RB Ricky
Watters gets a huge rush on Seattle’s
next drive, the longest allowed by the Chiefs all year. It sets the Seahawks up for the back-breaking
touchdown late in the game. The Seahawks
hold on for their first win at Arrowhead since 1990.
