Notes:  The Chiefs offense, led by QB Bill Kenney and RB Billy Jackson, marches downfield on the opening drive but come up empty when K Nick Lowery misses the field goal.  QB Neil Lomax gets the ball for the Cards, but after moving it to midfield the KC defense stops the drive.  The first quarter ends with no score.

After some back-and-forth in the second quarter, CB Trent Bryant picks off Lomax, setting up a 22-yard Kenney to WR Henry Marshall touchdown pass.  St. Louis then goes on offense and moves the ball to the KC 6-yard line before the Chiefs force a fumble and recover the ball.  A late second quarter drive produces a St. Louis field goal and the score at halftime is 7-3 in favor of the Chiefs.

The Cardinals open the second half with QB Jim Hart slinging the ball for big gains, but the drive ends with another fumble and Kansas City recovery.  After more back-and-forth the Cards tack on another field goal to cut KC’s lead to 1.

Kansas City has the ball to begin the fourth quarter, and after a long drive that included a 62-yard pass play to WR Carlos Carson, QB Bob Gagliano hits TE Willie Scott in the back of the end zone for a touchdown.  The Chiefs again frustrate St. Louis’ drive and they settle for a Neil O’Donaghue 53-yard field goal.  QB Todd Blackledge then comes in the game, and after a few successful plays he throws an interception to CB Cedric Mack, who runs it back for a touchdown.  The Chiefs’ ensuing drive ends in a punt, and after a great kick they force St. Louis to punt from their own 5.  Kansas City takes possession near midfield and after managing only 37 yards of offense Lowery kicks a 53-yard field goal to put the Chiefs up by 1 with 1:12 on the clock.  After a fourth sack on St. Louis quarterbacks the Cards are faced with fourth-and-fourteen.  They make the first down but on the next play they turn the ball over and Kansas City holds on for the win and possession of the coveted Governor’s Cup.
