Title: Black Out

FADE IN:
INT. MULDER/KRYCEK APARTMENT - NIGHT (9:37PM)
Mulder and Krycek are sitting around their coffee table. We notice that there is a couch leaning up against the newly re-built wall. A bunch of Krycek's crap is laying around. The boys have 'cleaned' their apartment (now made for one person) by pushing all the crap from the other side of the apartment that isn't there anymore to the sides and up against walls. It's a mess, but the boys believe it is clean.
A checkerboard is in the center. Mulder looks confused as Krycek makes his moves (cheating of course).
MULDER Outside, lightening cracks and thunder rolls. The lights begin to flicker. Mulder looks up at the ceiling. Then finally, the power cuts out. Leaving Mulder and Krycek in the dark.
I don't know where
you got this strange
talent for checkers, Krycek.KRYCEK
(smirks)
I know.
CUT TO:
INT. MARITA/SCULLY/REYES APARTMENT - 9:37PM
All the lights are off. Marita is alone. We can hear she is watching a scary movie. Suddenly, the power goes out leaving her all alone. We hear her whimper in fear.
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - 9:37PM
He's all alone watching a tape of NASCAR when the power goes out. He's in the dark.
DOGGETT
Awe man...CUT TO:
INT. SKINNER'S OFFICE - FBI - 9:37PM
Skinner is working on a case report on his computer. The power goes out.
SKINNER
No!We hear him hit the computer and bang on the keys... trying to fix it.
CUT TO:
INT. ROBERT ALFREDO'S APARTMENT - 9:37PM
We can't tell if the power is on or off. Monica and Alfredo are sitting on the ground holding hands. Their eyes are shut. Candles are all around them. Lightening flashes as they continue to do their seance.
CUT TO:
INT. MULDER/KRYCEK APARTMENT - 9:38PM
The only sound heard is the rain falling. Krycek is sitting on the couch. Mulder is standing in front of the window. Suddenly, a green glow lights up the sky. Mulder jumps back.
MULDER Krycek jumps off the couch and looks out the window with Mulder.
Oh my god! What was that?!KRYCEK
(playing with Mulder's mind)
It's aliens.
MULDER
I knew it!They both eagerly look out the window. Krycek rolls his eyes as he does this. But he's amused with how gullible Mulder is.
Thunder gently rolls.
Mulder's eyes go wide.
MULDER Mulder looks at him with bug eyes, his mouth dropped.
(scared)
Krycek? What was that?KRYCEK
(overly serious)
They've landed...
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE
Doggett has a candle lit. He is digging through a closet. Buddy is close by, sniffing items that Doggett takes out.
Finally, Doggett finds what he's looking for. A container of something and a thin book... a Peter Pan coloring book, the one he bought in 5x03 The Laundromat.
He takes these items and walks back into his living room. He opens his Peter Pan coloring book and looks for a picture to color.
CUT TO:
INT. MARITA/SCULLY/REYES APARTMENT - 9:39PM
Marita is rummaging through the kitchen. She's looking through the silver wear. She opens the dishwasher and picks up a sharp knife. It's dirty. Marita shakes her head.
MARITA She puts the dirty knife back in the dishwasher. She opens another drawer and grabs a butter knife.
I can't use a dirty knife.
She quickly turns around and holds the dull butter knife in a defensive position. Marita holds her flashlight up and shines it into the living room. She slowly walks towards the room, her pink bunny slippers shuffling on the ground. Marita is on the verge of crying.
MARITA Silence. Out of no where, Marita's eyes go wide with fear.
Wh-who's there?
MARITA'S POV -
The shadows are in the form of a monster like creature with three arms. This, of course, is only Marita's mind. Her eyes playing ticks on her.
Her flashlight starts to dim and flicker. Dim some more...out. We hear Marita squeak and whimper. The padded bottoms of her pink bunny slippers hit the ground as she runs off somewhere.
CUT TO:
INT. KITCHEN AT COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Scully is trying to clean up a mess she made. It's very difficult in the dark.
INSTRUCTOR Scully gives the instructor a smile. She puts another plate away. The instructor leaves the room. Scully shortly follows.
Dana, do you need help?SCULLY
No, I'm fine.INSTRUCTOR
I'm heading out. (beat)
You've been here all day,
go home and rest.
INT. HALLWAY
Scully looks down the hall. It's empty and she can't remember which way to go. She grabs her bag and takes her chances going to the left.
SCULLY She walks through some doors that lead to a stairwell.
(to herself)
I hate the dark.
CUT TO:
INT. SKINNER'S OFFICE
He has given up beating his computer. He has a single candle lit. He has been organizing files. He seems to be exhausted and bored of this, he checks his watch and decides to go home.
He leaves his office, and locks the door behind him.
INT. FBI HALLWAY
Skinner walks towards the stairs. He opens the door and walks in.
We hold on the door as it shuts. We hear a click as it locks. A small beat later, we hear Skinner jiggle the handle. Locked in.
SKINNER
(through door)
Oh come on!He bangs on the door.
SKINNER
(through door)
Somebody?! Help!He hits the door again.
CUT TO:
INT. ROBERT ALFREDO'S APARTMENT - 9:42PM
Monica and Alfredo are still sitting on the floor holding hands with their eyes shut. Alfredo halfway opens one eye.
ALFREDO Monica opens her eyes to look at him.
Nothing has happened.
MONICA
Open up. Don't shut it out.
Keep an open mind. (beat)
And whatever you do, don't
break the circle. No
matter what happens.She shuts her eyes again, and so does Alfredo. The flame in the candle flickers. It goes out.
ALFREDO
(demon voice)
I am Satan...Monica's eyes pop open. Alfredo looks at her in a scary way. Monica's eyes go wide.
MONICA
(a bit scared)
Robbie, cut it out.ALFREDO
(demon voice)
There is no Robbie...MONICA
(getting mad)
Stop it!She lets go of his hands.
ALFREDO Monica looks at him dead panned. She lights the candle again.
(normal voice)
Monica. What are you doing?
You broke the circle!MONICA
It wasn't working anyway.ALFREDO
Yes it was. The candle went out.
MONICA
Oh come on. I heard
you blow it out.A smile forms on his face. She was right.
CUT TO:
INT. MULDER/KRYCEK APARTMENT - 9:50PM
Krycek is sitting on the couch flipping through a "Playboy" magazine. Mulder is not in the room. He gets bored.
KRYCEK
Mulder? What are you doing?MULDER (O.S.)
Just a minute.Krycek puts the magazine on the coffee table. He gets up off the couch and looks out the window. The green glowing lights from the downed power lines continue to light up the sky every once in a while.
Mulder walks out of the kitchen and into the living room. He is wearing an aluminum foil hat on his head. Krycek has his back to him.
KRYCEK Krycek turns around. He sees Mulder in his aluminum foil hat and takes a step back. Not sure what to think of this.
The aliens are still
out there, ya know.MULDER
I've got my protection.
KRYCEK Krycek has a crooked grin on his face.
Mulder, what are you wearing?MULDER
(serious)
It blocks the alien's brain
commanders from getting in
and taking over me.
KRYCEK He sits down on the couch and picks up a "Highlights" magazine. Krycek just looks at him. Planning his next joke.
(about to die laughing)
Oh really?MULDER
Yep.
KRYCEK
How do you know they haven't
already gotten in your head?MULDER
I would know.KRYCEK
Hmm... what if they
got in my head?Mulder looks up at him with wide eyes. He never thought about what to do if they got into someone else's head!
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - 9:55PM
Crayons are all over the floor, the coloring book is open. We see that Doggett has been coloring in his Peter Pan coloring book.
Doggett is now throwing a tennis ball for Buddy. Buddy runs and gets it, and bring it back to Doggett.
Buddy shoots a look into the kitchen, ignoring Doggett throwing the ball.
DOGGETT Buddy continues to stair into the kitchen. He lets out a low growl. Doggett looks towards the kitchen. He's concerned about what Buddy has seen.
Go get your ball.
Buddy lets out a low "ruff". Doggett gets up off the floor and walks into the kitchen.
DOGGETT Buddy stays standing in the same spot. A noise off stage is heard, and Buddy barks and runs off somewhere. Doggett re-enters the living room. He hears the noise again. It's coming from upstairs. Doggett looks paranoid and grabs his gun. He looks towards the stairs and slowly goes towards them.
There's nothing, Buddy.
CUT TO:
BLACK
We only hear the breathing of a truly terrified person.
STRIKE! A match is lit. The only source of light. We see Marita looking around. She is in the bathroom. The fire on the match is close to her finger tips. She watches in fear.
MARITA
(as fire closes in)
Owe!The fire goes out. She strikes another match. This time, she finds a small candle. She slowly opens the door and peaks out.
The wind outside blows. The apartment shakes and creeks. Marita gets scared and runs out of the bathroom.
INT. SCULLY'S BEDROOM
Marita runs in. She sets the candle on Scully's dresser. She digs through a few drawers and then finds what she's looking for. What Scully has hid from her for her own protection... her own gun.
Marita checks her gun. It's loaded. Marita takes it and grabs her candle and peaks back into the living room.
CUT TO:
INT. STAIRWELL - COMMUNITY COLLEGE - 9:58PM
Scully is making her way down the stairs. The emergency lights are on.
SCULLY
(to herself)
I can't believe I'm lost.
This is so typical. My
first day and this happens.She turns a corner.
SCULLY She walks down more stairs and comes to another door. She looks around. No more stairs. She shrugs and opens the door.
There could be psychos...
Like Freddy Kreuger...
INT. BASEMENT OF THE COLLEGE
Scully enters the basement, however, it looks more like a boiler room from the Freddy movies. Scully looks paranoid now. As if her nightmares are coming true.
SCULLY
This is not good...She continues to walk around. She turns a corner and screams.
JANITOR
Sorry ma'am, didn't
mean to scare ya.SCULLY
It's ok. I'm a little lost.JANITOR
I'll help ya.SCULLY
Thank you so much.She looks at his name tag... FRED! Scully's eyes go wide as she realizes his name and how close it is to Freddy Kreuger.
CUT TO:
INT. FBI STAIRWELL - 10PM
Skinner has a little flashlight in his mouth. He has a few paperclips in his hand and he's trying to pick the lock.
Unlike Scully, Skinner doesn't have the luxury of emergency lights to help him. We only wonder what Mulder and Krycek have done to the FBI's emergency lights...
He's very intense on getting the lock picked. Suddenly, he drops a paper clip. He tries to catch it, but the flashlight falls out of his mouth and rolls down the stairs. Skinner looks down at it.
CUT TO:
INT. ROBERT ALFREDO'S APARTMENT - 10:03PM
Monica and Alfredo gave up on their seance. They are now listening to a battery powered radio. The station they are listening to is telling spooky mystery stories.
RADIO (filter) Alfredo and Monica listen. Their candle has gotten shorter.
She turned around quickly.
Her breath shortening. She
can't tell who it is, but
she knows it's no one
there for a good reason.
ALFREDO Alfredo turns off the radio.
Why are we listening to this?MONICA
Because there's nothing
else to do. The power's out.
ALFREDO Monica lifts an eye brow.
Tell me about you.
MONICA Alfredo nods.
Me?
MONICA
I think you already know about me.ALFREDO
No, I know the Monica at work.MONICA
Well, I was born in a hospital-ALFREDO
-I'd hope so.Monica smiles at him.
MONICA
... in Mexico. I was adopted
by this Mexican family. So
I don't know who my real
family is. But that's ok.ALFREDO
How did you get here?MONICA
Well, I came here because
it was a better job and life
style than what I had in New Orleans.ALFREDO
Hmm...Monica looks at him for a beat.
MONICA Monica gives him a look.
What about you?ALFREDO
(teasingly)
I'm not interesting.
ALFREDO Monica lifts an eyebrow. She didn't know this about him.
Alright. I have lived most of
my life in Florida. I worked
for the field office in Miami,
working undercover.
ALFREDO Alfredo hesitates. Does he really want to get into this?
And then I came here.MONICA
Let's get personal. (beat)
Tell me about your family.
ALFREDO Monica gives him a look as if saying "How did you end up as an FBI agent?" Alfredo gets it and continues.
Well, I have a younger sister,
Maria, who I haven't spoken
to in years.MONICA
Why not?ALFREDO
She's gotten herself in a
lot of trouble. Drugs and shit
like that. (beat) My father
abandoned us when I was ten. My
mother abused drugs and is
constantly in trouble with the law.
ALFREDO Monica nods in understandment.
I never approved of that kind
of life style and wanted to
be able to help people who
were living it.
MONICA Monica nods.
Is that why you
came here to work?ALFREDO
Not exactly. (beat) I was
working this one case. It
got too personal. I had to leave.MONICA
Too personal?ALFREDO
My father was one of the
people we were trying to
lock up. He would've
recognized me and my cover
would've been blown. (beat) I
didn't think I could lock him up.MONICA
Wouldn't that negate your
purpose of being an FBI agent?ALFREDO
Exactly. I had to leave.
CUT TO:
INT. MULDER/KRYCEK APARTMENT - 10:12PM
Krycek now has an aluminum foil hat on his head. Mulder is standing back looking at him in pride. Krycek stares back with a dead pan look.
MULDER Krycek jumps off the couch. He's had enough of Mulder's stupidity.
It's perfect.KRYCEK
I feel and look stupid.MULDER
I don't care. And you
shouldn't either. We're
safe now. The aliens can't
brainwash us now.
KRYCEK
Oh my god! Mulder! I lied!
There are no aliens! It's
green light from power lines
that have come down!Mulder is in shock.
MULDER Krycek can't believe what he is hearing. Mulder slowly backs away in fear of Krycek. Then he quickly runs off into another room. Krycek sits back down on the couch. Another plan forming in his head. An evil grin forms on his face.
I'm too late... they've
already gotten to you.
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - 10:15PM
Doggett is in his bedroom. His gun is drawn. He turns corners quickly while taking aim. Each time he does this he sees nothing. He looks down a hallway and sees that a door is creaked halfway open. He slowly walks towards it.
He reaches the door. His breathing has intensified. He grabs the door handle and swings the door open. As he does this, he lets out a scream. Taking aim with his gun.
Nothing is in the closet.
Doggett's breathing steadies. He shuts the closet door.
CUT TO:
INT. MARITA/SCULLY/REYES APARTMENT - LIVING ROOM - 10:17PM
Marita has cornered herself, surrounded with cushions from the couch. Her gun is in her hand, candle on the floor.
The flame is flickering, making spooky shadows on the walls. A noise from the other side of the room paralyzes her. Something is rustling in a plant.
MARITA
(terrified)
Go away!The plant makes the noise again.
MARITA
Leave me alone!The noise moves closer to her. Her eyes go wide. She takes aim with her gun, shuts her eyes...
BLAM! She fires!
The sound of a cat is heard. Marita's eyes go wide.
MARITA No sound from the kitty. Marita sniffs, and begins to cry at the thought that she might've just killed an innocent white kitty.
(worried)
Oh my goodness, where did
you come from?
MARITA
(crying/picking the kitty up)
Kitty?Suddenly, the kitty begins to move in her arms. She's ok. Marita smiles down at the helpless adorable white kitty. She's still crying, but this time out of happiness.
MARITA
Oh Kitty. I'm so sorry.The kitty snuggles in her lap.
MARITA CUT TO:
I won't let them get
to us. (beat) I promise.
INT. COLLEGE - 10:20PM
Scully and Fred the janitor reach a door. She doesn't seem afraid of him anymore.
FRED Fred nods, and opens the door for her.
The parking lot is right
through these doors.SCULLY
(making sure)
Lot C, right?
FRED Scully gives him a smile and walks through the doors.
It stopped raining.SCULLY
Good. (beat) Thank you
so much for helping me.FRED
No problem, ma'am.
CUT TO:
INT. FBI STAIRWELL - 10:22PM
Skinner is sitting on the steps. The only thing he can do now is watch his flashlight die down. He gave up on the door.
Skinner becomes alert when he hears footsteps. The light of another flashlight is hitting the walls. It is none other than Assistant Director Brad Follmer.
Skinner gives him a weird looks when he sees him.
SKINNER Brad didn't know this.
What are you doing here?FOLLMER
What about you? (beat)
I needed to get something
from my office. Elevators don't work.SKINNER
And now you’re locked in here.
FOLLMER
You've got to be joking?He heads to the door. Tries it, doesn't open.
FOLLMER
Dammit!He sits down next to Skinner.
SKINNER Skinner ponders this.
Have any batteries?FOLLMER
No. I've got a flashlight.SKINNER
Good. Mine's dying.FOLLMER
I wonder why the emergency
Lights aren’t working.
FOLLMER Brad shoots a glare at him.
This is so typical. I wonder
if I called Monica if she'd
come open the doors for us.SKINNER
(rubbing it in)
Isn't she on a date
with Agent Alfredo?
FOLLMER Skinner just looks at him. Refusing to let him use his phone.
(demanding)
Give me your cell phone.SKINNER
Use your own.FOLLMER
I left it in the car.
CUT TO:
INT. ROBERT ALFREDO'S APARTMENT - 10:30PM
Monica and Alfredo are sitting on the ground still. They have wine glasses with some wine in them. Monica seems to have had a little more than Alfredo has. It shows in her speech.
MONICA Alfredo laughs. Monica takes another sip of her wine.
And that is why I'll
never do that again.
ALFREDO Monica laughs.
Can I tell you something?MONICA
Sure.ALFREDO
You know when you
have these feelings...
MONICA Monica looks at him goofily.
I have feelings.ALFREDO
(after a beat)
What I'm trying to say
is... well... I like you a lot.
ALFREDO He's cut off by Monica's cell phone ringing.
What I'm saying is-
MONICA Monica picks up the phone. Alfredo downs the rest of his wine.
Hold on. I have to get my phone.
MONICA INTER CUTS:
(into phone)
Hello?
FOLLMER Monica laughs.
Monica. It's me, Brad.MONICA
Bradley?FOLLMER
I'm locked in a stairwell.
FOLLMER
Can you get me out?MONICA
No... I'm on a date.There is a beat before Follmer says anything. He has taken notice of her drunken state.
FOLLMER
But I love you.MONICA
(freaked)
Huh?FOLLMER
I love you.Monica doesn't know what to say. There is a long silent beat as Brad waits for Monica to say something.
FOLLMER Alfredo shoots a look in her direction. His moment is over.
Monica? Are you there?MONICA
Yeah...FOLLMER
Well?MONICA
Um... well... I love
you too, Bradley...
FOLLMER Monica doesn't know what to do so she just hangs up on him.
Can you come get me out?MONICA
Well um... I'm... uh...
kinda busy. But um...
Alfredo says nothing.
MONICA She grabs her coat and her keys. She's confused. She makes her way to the door.
(confused a bit)
I have to go help Bradley.
Alfredo stands up and goes over to her.
ALFREDO She opens the door. But Alfredo stops her from leaving. He kisses her. A small one. But it's enough to stop her in her tracks. Alfredo says nothing. He looks her in the eyes. She doesn't know what to do. She doesn't seem mad at him. Infact, a little smile can be seen. He moves in again. She doesn't refuse him. The keys drop out of her hand. She shuts the door.
Monica...MONICA
He's locked in a stairwell.
Bradly will have to wait for someone else...
CUT TO:
INT. MULDER/KRYCEK APARTMENT - MULDER'S ROOM - 10:32PM
Mulder has completely wrapped himself in aluminum foil. He is now taping foil on the walls...
The door to the room swings open and a giant bug stands in the doorway. It's Krycek. Mulder does what's natural and screams like a sissy.
KRYCEK
(loud/disguising voice)
I have come to eat you!Mulder's eyes go wide with fear.
CUT TO:
INT. MARITA/SCULLY/REYES APARTMENT - 10:35PM
Marita is nowhere to be seen. The front door slowly opens. Footsteps walk in...
INT. SCULLY'S ROOM
We now see that Marita is hiding under Scully's bed. The kitty isn't with her. The footsteps come closer. Marita stops breathing in fear. Her gun is in her hand.
The bedroom door creeps open. Marita fires the gun!
BLAM!
The bullet hits the heal of Scully's shoes. Scully falls out of view.
SCULLY (O.S.)
Marita?! Was that you?MARITA
(worried)
Scully? Oh my goodness!Scully slowly enters the room. Her flashlight is on. She looks under her bed to find Marita. Tears in her eyes.
SCULLY
Marita? Are you ok?MARITA
I was scared!SCULLY
I see that. (beat)
Give me your gun.Marita hands Scully the gun. She makes her way out from under the bed.
MARITA Scully smiles at her and gives her a hug. The lights finally come back on.
There was a monster with
three arms in here.
SCULLY Marita nods her head.
Do you want me to read
you "The Velveteen Rabbit"?
MARITA
(happy)
I'd like that. Plus,
I found a kitty!Marita grabs her own Velveteen Rabbit as Scully grabs a copy of the book. They walk into the living room.
INT. LIVING ROOM
SCULLY She smiles.
(confused)
A kitty?MARITA
Uh-huh.
SCULLY
We can't have pets, Marita.MARITA
But Johnny brings
Buddy. It'll be ok.Marita finds the kitty and shows Scully. Scully just smiles at her.
CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - 10:38PM
The power is back on. Doggett seems to be tired of searching his house for nothing. Buddy is sleeping on the ground. NASCAR is back on TV, and Doggett is drinking a glass of water. Doggett's eyes get heavy, and he calmly falls asleep.
CUT TO:
INT. FBI STAIRWELL - 10:40PM
Skinner and Follmer are watching the flashlight die. The lights, unfortunately for them, have not come back on.
FOLLMER Skinner rolls his eyes. Why, out of every agent of the FBI, did he have to get stuck with the love-sick Brad Follmer.
Don't worry, Monica will come.
Off of Skinner's irritated look, as Brad continues on about how Monica will come, we...
