Shan Jin as the Phantom

Shan Jin is a wonderfully tortured Phantom. His back story? He used to be the greatest singer of the theater, Song Danping. The owner’s daughter, Li Xiaoxia, of course falls in love with him. The lovers meet secretly, but no good rival and full-time hood Tnag Jun tells papa of the union.

To sum it up. Song is beaten, then doused with acid. It isn’t always clear if it is papa or the rival who wants this. Oh they also burn down his theater and his girlfriend, goes mad. But not before she faints and blood pours out of her mouth.

Flash forward ten years to a very lonely Song. His ‘home’ is now host to a new group of actors.He not only tutors the male star, but sets him up with Li Xiaoxia. Which Song refers to as ‘love by proxy’. Which turns out to be a bad idea as the star already has a girlfriend.

Well of course, Li Xiaoxia falls for the act. She comes to life again to catch the latest action. A demented group from the army arrives to chase Song with torches. He takes refuge, and they burn his hiding place. Our hero jumps into the river, his girlfriend goes nuts, again, and it all ends a bit sappily ever after.
