Robert Patrick Speaks
Robert Patrick Talks About Riding Into The Sunset As Agent Doggett

With the apparent death of the X-Files -- except in syndication and on the big screen -- I thought it prudent to track down http://www.robert-patrick.com/Robert Patrick before he disappeared on vacation or on another project. Luckily, I was able to track him down and get some of my pressing questions answered because, as we all know, the truth is out there.

You are in the process of completing the final season of "The X-Files," what are your best memories of playing Special Agent John Doggett?

The whole experience has been fantastic. I consider myself incredibly lucky and am so grateful that I got to be on what I consider one of the best shows on television.

What will you miss most about "The X-Files?"

The crew. The people that I work with everyday. The production value. The stories. The care that goes into making each episode. The cast.

What appealed to you the most about the John Doggett role?

He’s honest, loyal, dependable. He’s a real straight shooter, a great guy. A hero. And I wanted to play a romantic lead.

Do you think Agent Doggett will have life after cancellation, perhaps in the next "X-Files" movie?

I have no idea.

How would you like to see Agent Doggett leave the show?

The same way he came in.

Would you classify yourself more like John Doggett or Fox Mulder in terms of trying to explain the so-called unexplainable?

Definitely like John Doggett.

Do you believe that life exists in the universe other than on earth?

Prove it to me, baby!

Which episode of "The X-Files" is your favorite and why?

"Via Negativa" (from season 8) and "John Doe" (from season 9). Because I got to play John Doggett outside the norm. "Via Negativa" in a dream, an alternate consciousness. "John Doe", as an amnesiac. They were fun and challenging. Look for more of these kind of spectacular episodes coming up. Doggett’s whole belief system will be challenged in "Audrey Pauley". Oh and there’s finally a kiss between Doggett and Reyes.

You have two children, how have they reacted to your roles on "the X-Files" and "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"?

They haven’t seen either of those. But, they know Daddy’s an actor because they HAVE seen "Spy Kids". AND they loved it!

What was your reaction when you first saw the morphing technology used for special effects on "Terminator 2"?

Wow! They did it!

"X-Files" is your first television series, how would you compare it to your work in feature films such as "Terminator 2: Judgment Day"?

"X-Files" wasn’t my first TV series. I was in three episodes of "The Sopranos" during their second season. As far as the difference, they’re all the same to me. TV’s just faster and more demanding on a day-to-day basis.

You have also worked on stage in David Mamet's "The Shawl," what did you like most about working on stage and will you return to the stage?

Yes, I will go back. The best part, is once you start, you go until you finish. In TV and film you don’t get to see your entire performance arch.

You have played numerous roles in sci-fi works such as "Terminator 2", "Fire in the Sky", "Equalizer 2000", "The Faculty", and "X-Files", do you think you are drawn to these roles or are these roles drawn to you?

They are drawn to me and I have no idea why! When I was growing up, I was a fan of westerns, heroes, cops.

Of the many movies that you have done, is there a role that you enjoyed doing more than the others?

I love the character I played in "Texas Rangers" (Sgt. John Armstrong), even though the film was a huge disappointment.

Is there a role in your future that you are particularly looking forward to playing?

More Heroes!

So, what comes next after "X-Files?"

I’ll let you know as soon as I know! Right now, I am looking for the best scripts, whether it’s television or film.

Signing off, The Hollywood Skinny
