He was having a bath house built when duty called him away. So he left instructions with the builders on how to finish the construction. Barbara had been secretly studying Christianity and decided that the Pagan beliefs of her family were wrong. She directed the builders to add a third window to the bath house to symbolize the Holy Trinity.
When Dioscorus returned he was furious with the builders. He was enraged when he found out that Barbara had instructed them to add the third window. When Barbara declared herself a Christian, Dioscorus was so angry that he took her before the Perfect of the Province who decreed she be tortured and then beheaded. Dioscorus, himself, asked to carry out this punishment. According to the legend, on his way home after be-heading his daughter, he was struck by lightening and his body consumed.
Saint Barbara lived and died about the year 300 AD. Because of the circumstances surrounding her death, she is known as the patron Saint in times of danger from thunder storms, fire and sudden death.
