Chapter 16

Once at home, Madison went straight to the phone and dialed Nick's number. "Hello?"

"Nick? Its Madison, Kev said you called."

"Yeah..how was the doctor's?"

"Good..my ankle will be all healed by next week."

"Thats good..umm..has the mail come there yet?"

"Umm..no."

"Try to get to it before Kev does, okay?"

"Why?"

He sighed, "Well..umm..where's your journal at?"

She looked around and walked towards the stairs, "It was by my bed..on the endtable."

"Is it there now?"

She opened the drawer and rummaged through it, each second that passed was starting to get her frantic. "Umm..no..its not here anymore."

"I hate to say it Mad..but I think someone took it and made copies of a bunch of entries. I checked my mail and there was this big, fat envelope full of papers. Its your handwriting."

Madison sank down on her bed, "Oh my lord..who do you think would do this??"

"Kev wouldn't I know that.."

"I know that too..he was with..Jamie all night. Shit..that little bitch stole my journal..oh man!"

"I didn't read 'em Madison, I swear I didn't.."

She sighed and tried to keep from crying, "Its okay Nick..just..throw them away..okay?"

"Okay.."

"I better go..talk to you later Nick."

"Bye Madison."

Madison hung up the phone and walked downstairs in a daze. Kevin was standing at the counter, flipping through the mail. "Kevin? Is that the mail?"

"Yep..just came.."

Madison darted over and grabbed the fat envelope out of his hands, "You can't open this!"

"Why not??"

"Because..you..just..umm..can't, thats why not."

"Madison, its my mail, it has MY name on it..give it to me."

She put the envelope behind her back and pleaded with him again, "Kevin..please..just don't read this..I'm begging you.."

"Madison? What is wrong??"

"I know what it is.," Jamie's voice said from the doorway.

Kevin, of course, went over to her and kissed her. "What is it then Jamie?"

Jamie crossed her arms in front of her and smirked, "Just something I found."

"You didn't find it, you stole it!," Madison exclaimed.

"Stole what??," Kevin asked.

"I just borrowed something from Madison here..why don't you read it Kev.," Jamie said smiling sweetly and handing him a pack of papers.

"NO!"

Kevin looked the papers over and then looked at Madison who looked about ready to cry. "Where did you get this Jamie?," Kevin asked sternly.

"I borrowed Madison's little diary..who would of thought Miss I'm So Pretty used to be the high school dork??"

Madison dropped her head and put the envelope back on the counter. "Madison was a huge geek back in high school, she couldn't get a date to prom until the last minute and it was all a joke, on her. Aww..poor baby, didn't anyone ever tell you kids are cruel??," Jamie said snidely.

"Screw you Jamie.," Madison hissed before pushing her out of the way and running outside.

"How could you do that to her?!," Kevin exclaimed.

"She thinks she's all that, and she thinks she's going to get you!"

"All you're worried about is yourself Jamie. Get out."

"What?!"

"I said get out!"

Jamie left relunctantly, leaving the door wide open.

Madison finally stopped down the street. All the horrible memories from high school were all jumbled and coming back in flashes. The first day of her freshman year, her senior prom, the big joke that got played on her by the cutest guy in school. She sat down on the curb, determined not to cry. Crying wasn't going to get her anywhere. But she couldn't get the look Kevin had out of her mind, it was pity.

She wiped the tears that finally fell away quickly. She looked up as a black corvette pulled up in front of her. Howie opened the door, "Madison?"

"God, don't look at me like that.."

"Like what?"

"She sent you one too, huh?"

Howie sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets, "Yeah..who sent it?"

"Jamie.."

"Are you okay?"

Madison pulled her knees up closer to her, "I don't know.."

Howie sat down next to her, "You wanna talk about it?"

"No..I never want to talk about it.."

"High school must of been hell.."

"Pure and utter hell. Kids are cruel. And adults can be too.."

"Why don't you want to talk about it?"

She sighed, "Because..its too hard D..I hate even thinking back to it. I hate thinking about all those people that laughed at me, that called me names..and all those other people who felt sorry for me..I don't want that from anybody."

"No one's looking at you with pity.."

"You maybe aren't..and Nick's isn't..but Kevin has..I saw how he looked at me after he read some of it.."

"You don't know that.."

She nodded, "Yes I do Howie."

"Do you want me to take you back there?"

She sighed, "I have no choice..do I?"
