The next morning, around 10, Kevin pulled up in front of the hospitals main doors and parked. He hadn't gotten much sleep the night before after the conversation he had with his mom. When he did sleep, his dreams were filled with memories of summers and schooltimes with Scott and then more recent ones of Lila and the baby. He sighed and put his hands into his pockets as he rode the elevator up to the Maternity Ward.
He entered Lila's room to find her standing, packing her things. He knocked lightly on the door, "Safe to come in?"
She turned around, "Sure, come on..I'm almost done."
He stepped inside and smiled, "Almost?"
"I just started to pack like five minutes ago..."
"Where's Justin?"
"Right here...you wanna hold him while I finish?"
"Sure...I got Jack to put in the car seat this morning before he left and your surprises are at the house."
She sighed, "I wish you'd just tell me.."
He smiled and picked up the baby, "If I told you Lila, it wouldn't be a surprise. And mommy LOVES surprises, doesn't she Justin?"
"Don't turn him against me just yet Kevin."
He grinned, "I won't...the other guys will.."
Alison, the nurse, came in with a wheelchair, "You are officially being kicked out Lila."
Lila laughed, "Well, as much as it was an enjoyable stay, I'm glad to be going home."
"Well, hop on in, and you'll be home before you know it."
Lila sighed and sat down, "I don't see why, I'm just fine walking.."
"Don't argue.," Kevin said handing her Justin.
She nodded, "Okay..okay..I see why the guys call you the dad of the group."
"Ha."
"Thought so."
Kevin grabbed her bags and followed Alison and Lila to the elevators.
Once at the car, Kevin put the baby into the car seat while Alison helped Lila into the car. Then, they were on their way home.
Kevin unlocked the front door to the house that Mary had provided him and set Lila's things down near the stairs. Lila was reaching into the backseat to get Justin when Kevin came back down the walk. "Need help?"
"Nope..I got him."
She walked in front of Kevin into the house and stopped just outside of the living room when she saw all the things that were set up all over the place. "Oh..my...God...Kevin!"
He smiled, "Surprise."
She turned to look at him, "Where did all this come from??"
"My brothers and my mom...and the guys."
"You're joking."
"Nope...arrived yesterday."
"There's..there's so much!"
"I know..come upstairs."
She followed Kevin up the stairs and he led her into the nursery that was once un-finished. Now, it was a baby palace. Her jaw dropped, "Who did this?"
"Jack and me.."
"Wow...Kevin...this is..wonderful!"
He smiled, "You like it?"
"I love it! I just can't believe all this was done..for me.."
"Don't start crying."
"I'm not..really.."
"There's one more thing."
She turned to look at him, "What?"
"Well, me and the guys were talking and we decided that when Justin is just a little older that you and him should come stay with me in Orlando for awhile..as a vacation of sorts..and when we're all home for more than a week.."
"Really?"
"Really.."
"That'd..that'd be great Kevin.."
"It'd be a change of scenery.."
"True..I can't believe all of this.."
"Are you surprised?"
She nodded, "Very!"
"Then, my mission is accomplished."
Kevin helped her unpack and then drag everything into the nursery and her room. Lila put Justin down in his new crib to sleep and finally realized just how tired she really was. Kevin smiled, "I got some errands to run for my mom, is there anything you need?"
Lila shook her head, "No..I think I'm going to go take a nap though..."
"Ok..I'll call you later."
"Thanks Kevin..for today..and just well..everything...I mean that...not many guys would have stepped up like you did when a good friend of yours died.."
"Scott would kill me if I didn't take care of you Lila..."
She smiled, sadly, "I wish he was here to meet Justin.."
"Me too.."
"You think..he's up there..keeping an eye on everything?"
Kevin nodded, "I like to think that he's watching everything and making sure everythings okay.."
She nodded and sighed, "Me too...you'll call later?"
"Sure..later Lila."
"Bye Kevin."
As Lila laid in her bed trying to fall asleep. It was as if she had developed a small crush on Kevin Richardson. She laughed to herself, 'That's ridiculous! It hasn't even been a year! I can't be attracted to another man when Scott was THE man for me...can I?'.
Even though she was tired; sleep was a long time in coming.
