Kevin stood on the front stoop to Mary and Jack's house a few days later. He figured it had been enough time (sort of) for Lila and Justin to get a routine down and figured that would give them enough time to get situated.
Lila pulled the door open and smiled, "Hi Kevin."
"Hey..how are you doin'?"
She nodded and ushered him in, "I'm good..tired, but I'm good. How are you?"
"I'm good, been doing some writing."
"That's cool..want anything to drink?"
"No, I'm good. Where's Justin?"
She smiled, "Should have known, that's what everyone says right after they say 'hello..'. He's upstairs asleep but I'll probably go get him up here in a few minutes."
"OOhh..he doin' okay?"
"Yep..doing fine."
"How much sleep ARE you getting?"
She sat down on the couch across from the chair Kevin sat in, "Ummm..I don't know. It's enough..really..he's been sleeping with me in my room so he doesn't disturb Mary and Jack that much. He's been pretty good though about waking up like every 4 to 5 hours."
"That normal?"
"Yeah.."
"You're different."
"I am?"
He nodded, "Yeah...you're happy."
"I was happy before..."
He shook his head, "Not really, you weren't. But now, it's like you're...you're back to what I knew of before he died."
"You think so?"
"Yeah..."
"Half the time, I don't know what I'm doing...I..I'm so scared I'm going to do something wrong and at night when I do sleep, I dream of him..and I'm afraid I'll disappoint him in some way..."
"Lila, you could never disappoint Scott. He loved you. And somehow, I think he's watching over all of us.."
"Really?"
"Yeah.."
She smiled, "I like to think that..."
"Are you happy?"
"Of course."
"What about you wanting to move out?"
She sighed, "I still do..and I don't even know if I want to stay in Kentucky...staying here is almost too hard at times.."
"You could come live with me?"
Lila heard the cry from upstairs and avoided Kevin's gaze as she got up to go get Justin.
Kevin groaned and ran a hand through his hair after Lila left the room. 'Stupid, stupid, stupid. I am SO stupid...that was a dumb thing to say to someone who just lost the man she loved several months ago! Geez!,', He thought.
She came back a minute later carrying Justin. She sat down and laid him beside her on the couch, surrounding him with two pillows. "You're serious?," She finally asked.
Kevin sighed, "That was a stupid thing to say and I shouldn't have asked...you've got way too much stuff going on in your own life and I shouldn't have asked you that..plain and simple. I'm sorry."
She shook her head, "Don't be...I..I was just a little surprised...that's it. I don't know about..moving in with you Kevin. We're friends and all..but your fans don't know that..they'd automatically assume I'm with you or something..and we're just friends."
He nodded, "Right."
She nodded and then picked Justin up as he began to cry a little, "Right...I don't know Kevin...would you really want an unemployed woman and an infant in your house?"
He shrugged, "My house is big..needs more than one person. Look, we can wait until you decide..maybe you can just move down there, get yourself a place or whatever, get yourself a job...either that or you can move in with me, get yourself a job..whatever."
"I'll think about it..ok?"
Kevin smiled, "Sounds like a plan."
"I mean, it's not that I don't want to or anything like that...it sounds like a great opprutunity...but I think that right NOW it's not very...probable."
"I understand...so, can I take you two out to lunch?"
She smiled, "That'd be great."
Kevin sat in the backyard of his mother's house later that evening. His mom had retired to bed about an hour before, leaving him alone with the thoughts that ran rapid in his mind. He sat slouched in one of the lounge chairs, staring out at the woods that were about fifteen feet from where he sat. Lila was on his mind, as she had been for about the past two days. Asking her to move in with him in Orlando was a bold move, he knew that the minute the words left his mouth. But her saying that she would actually THINK about it almost made his jaw drop open. Kevin's growing 'crush' on Lila was getting out of hand, she was on his mind what seemed day and night. It was getting ridiculous. He had a crush on the woman his best friend was going to marry. He had a crush on the woman his best friend would have had a son with.
Kevin groaned and threw his head back, this WAS getting ridiculous. He began to think of Scott. What would he think if he knew Kevin liked Lila, as more than a friend? Or maybe he already did. Somehow.
Would Scott hate him? Or would he encourage them both. Kevin had a small inkling that Scott would encourage him....and would encourage Lila to move on as well.
Kevin leaned forward and put his head in his hands. He was tired and his thoughts were beginning to run together. He looked towards the sky where it was beginning to clear off and the mood was beginning to show through.
"I hope you're okay with this Scott...please don't hate me."
