Two months passed and Kevin (as well as those other guys in the group) were still on tour around the U.S.
He was sitting on his bus riding to the next venue when the phone began to ring, he didn't recognize the number but answered anyways, hoping it wasn't some girl who figured out his number just to scream in his ear. "Hello?," He asked tiredly as he crawled onto the bed in the back.
"Umm...Kevin?"
"Yeah...who's this?"
"This..this is Lila."
"Lila? What's wrong?"
"Something's happened to Scott, Kevin..."
"What??"
"I can't tell you over the phone...is there any possible way you could come here??"
Kevin sighed and swung his legs over the side of the bed, "Yeah...I think I can get a flight...we don't have another show for two days...I can be there late tonight most likely.."
"ok.."
"Lila..please, tell me what's wrong?"
"I..I can't..."
"Are you sure?"
"Just...I think...if you watch the national news, you'll get an idea of what happened, I can fill you in when you get here.."
"Ok..I'll call you when I get in...take care of yourself Lila..."
"I will..bye."
"Bye."
Kevin turned the phone off and went to go tell his driver that he needed to get to the closest airport, then he went back in the back again to call his manager and let him know that he was going to be gone for a day or two. Michael, their manager, wasn't too happy since Kevin wouldn't tell him why he was leaving or anything but let him go anyways.
Worn out, Kevin turned the tv to one of the channels he could get and laid the remote down, it was CNN.
He had just begun to doze off when some news guy came on and began talking about some military planes that went down over the Middle East. Kevin's eyes opened and he leant forward to see the tv better as footage of some of the planes began to be shown. A newswoman then appeared on the screen, "This is Dallas Airforce Base right outside of Dallas, Texas where all of the pilots were from......"
Kevin blocked out the rest; that was where Scott was stationed. Everything then fell into place.
Scott was one of the pilots whose plane had gone down...he was one of the pilots missing.
Lila was just beginning to doze off when the doorbell rang, she glanced at the clock, it was nearing 3 a.m. She opened the door to see a very ragged looking Kevin standing in front of her. His hair was in disarray and he looked as if he had been crying, his eyes were red and slightly puffy. Lila smiled weakly, "Hi Kev.."
"Please tell me what I saw on CNN isn't true?"
"I wish I could...but that's what my tv has been on since I found out about it...," She said letting him pass her into the house.
"Have you found out anything else?"
She shook her head, "No...plus, I'm not married to him yet so they probably won't...they'll tell his parents and immediate family before they tell me.."
He ran a hand through his hair, "That's right..I guess that was a stupid question.."
"No..it wasn't....I'm sorry to call you...I just can't sit here by myself anymore though.."
"It's okay, I wouldn't of found out if you hadn't called and told me to watch the news....come in here and tell me what happened..."
She followed him into the living room and sat beside him on the couch. "I got up the other morning, Scott was supposed to call me when they finished their run and landed on the air force carrier. I guess that would of been..about 9 a.m. our time, so I was up and he hadn't called by 11 so I got kinda worried, I'm that type of person anyways. So I got ready for the day, you know, just going along normally and one of the neighbors wives came over and asked if I was okay, I didn't know why I wouldn't be and she calmly told me that the planes had disappeared and the pilots were missing. Of course, I didn't expect to find out Scott was one of them that was missing, I thought maybe he had already made it and it was just some other...pilots. How stupid...they stayed in formation the entire time...anyways, so then I found out that Scott was missing...I called everyone that maybe would know anything but noone would tell me anything...so, I've been sitting here watching CNN and every other news channel. I thought you deserved to know Kevin.."
"Thank you for calling me Lila...I'm glad you thought of me.."
She smiled and looked down at the floor, "You're his best friend...he would want you here...I guess."
"I know he would, he'd be yelling at me to take care of you for him..."
"Can I get you anything to drink, eat?"
Kevin shook his head, "No..I'm fine..but I think I will go crash..you don't mind, do you?"
"No, not at all, pick a room, any room..."
"Are you going to sleep?"
"I can't...I've tried but it 's just not happening.."
Kevin sighed, he could tell already that she was as stubborn as they come, "Ok...wake me if you hear anything."
"I will."
Kevin left her sitting in the living room and went upstairs to try to get some sleep.
And when he came back down hours later, she was still in the same place and position. Kevin sighed and rubbed a hand through his hair, "Lila?"
She didn't respond.
"Lila?"
He didn't get a response, so he walked in front of her and knelt down and smiled; she was asleep in a very odd position.
Kevin managed to lay her down and covered her with a blanket from the couch, then went into the kitchen to make some breakfast.
Lila woke up to the wonderful smell of bacon and eggs and pancakes, her stomach growled. She was confused, forgetting Kevin was there, and got up to find him standing in the kitchen in front of the stove, an apron tied around his neck, it was so cute. She laughed and he spun around, a spatula in his hand, "You're awake."
"Yeah..I woke up to the wonderful smell of food...no one's cooked me breakfast in forever!"
"You mean to tell me that Scotty never fixed you breakfast??"
She shook her head, taking a seat, "No...was he supposed to?"
"Well..I guess not...but I just thought he would have, he cooks good.."
"Figures.."
He smiled, "So..you hungry?"
She nodded, "Oh yeah."
"Ok...where's your glasses?"
"Right cabinet..no, your other right."
He laughed, "Sorry."
"It's okay.."
