Lila stood on the soft green earth, barely paying attention as the pastor stood in front of her and Scott's parents, reading from the Bible. Her head hung a little lower and she looked out of the corner of her eye. He didn't show.
She hadn't heard from Kevin since he had left to rejoin his tour. She knew he would be busy..but this was his best friend's funeral..surely, his management or whoever would understand.
Mary put a hand on Lila's shoulder, "We're goin' back to the house honey, are you coming?"
Lila looked up as the people around her began to disperse. "Umm..can I have a minute?"
Mary nodded, "Sure, we'll wait for you by the car."
"Ok..thanks."
"No problem."
Lila waited until everyone had left and she was left alone with Scott. She knelt down in the dirt, not caring if she got the bottom of her dress dirty or not. She brushed her hand across the headstone and sighed, "God, I miss you and it hasn't even really sunk in yet. You were supposed to call me Scott..what happened to you? I know what they say..but something else happened, I know it did.," She bit her lip and stood up, "In about eight months or so Scotty, you were gonna be a dad..I don't know what to do now...I'm stuck all alone..I know, you would want me to go on and everything but right now..it seems as if I'm dying slowly...I miss you and love you Scott and I hope whereever you are, you're okay."
She stood, brushing her hands across her dress haphazardly. She then turned and walked down the hill to Mary and Scott's father, Jack.
Kevin sat practically on the other side of the world, staring out the window of his hotel room as the rain slipped down the panes slowly. It reflected his mood perfectly. He knew that today was the day of Scott's funeral..he wanted to go...no, he needed to go but he couldn't force himself to get on a plane and face his mom and brothers, Scott's parents, or Lila. The guys would have understand, management would have to, but he felt he was better needed here. Funerals were not the most easiest thing for a person to deal with in the world, and he knew he should have gone but he couldn't. He couldn't stand watching as his best friend was buried right in front of him before either of them reached 60.
He sighed once more as a flash of lightning lit up his darkened room. "I hope you're okay Scott...and I'll try to take care of her for you, the best I can."
Lila sat at the kitchen table in Mary and Jack's kitchen as Mary rushed around to get the food ready for the people that would be arriving shortly. As far as Lila knew, it would only be her, Mary, Jack, and Kevin's mom and brothers. Lila sighed and turned to look at Mary, "Mary, you've really got to stop and sit, you're going to make yourself sick rushing around like this.."
"I'm sorry Lila..I'm just so stressed and so...just everything right now."
"I know. Me too."
"I wasn't surprised he wasn't here you know."
"Who?"
"Kevin."
"Oh?"
Mary nodded, "That boy has been through alot, with his father dying and all. I don't blame him."
"He said he would come."
"I know he did, he also said he would try. I don't blame him. He'll deal with Scotty's death in his own way."
Lila looked down at her hands, "I need to tell you something Mary."
Mary stood up again and went back to the stove to heat up something, "You know whatever it is Lila, you can tell me. You're practically family anyways...and well..I've always wanted a daughter."
"We'll never be true family."
"Maybe not, dear, but I believe we've gotten to know one another just as well..now, what is it?"
Lila looked up, a pained look crossing through her eyes, "I'm pregnant."
Brian knocked on Kevin's door and waited for him to answer.
A minute later, he knocked again, still no reply. Brian sighed and knocked, louder, one last time. If Kevin didn't answer this time, he was going to go find security and have them unlock it.
Kevin finally pulled the door open, "What Brian? I thought I said I wanted to be left alone."
"You're mom called. She wants to know why you didn't show up in Kentucky today. She also said for you to turn on the ringer on your phone and turn on your cell phone."
"I didn't go to Kentucky because I didn't want to see Scott buried, Brian, simple as that."
Brian stepped into the room as Kevin vacated the door. "Kevin..."
"Look, I just don't deal with funerals real well...he knew that."
"I think he'd understand that Kev.."
"I hope he does...because I feel awful about not being there for his family...and..and her."
"Who? His fiance?"
Kevin nodded, sitting down on the bed, "Yeah...Lila. She's...she's perfect for him Bri."
"Yeah I bet, to put up with his shit."
Kevin smiled, "I joked with him that alot..I can't believe he was finally ready to settle down."
"You know we won't be home for like a couple months Kev.."
Kevin sighed, "I know..."
"Call your mom, k? So she won't worry?"
Kevin nodded and barely looked up as Brian left the room, shutting the door behind him.
Groaning slightly, Kevin reached over to pick up the phone and began to dial his mom's number.
