Chapter 5

Four Months Later

Mary smiled as she finally got Lila to laugh at one of her jokes. They were cheesy, yes, but if it got her to smile even a little then Mary knew her job was done. After Lila had confessed to being pregnant, Mary and Jack had insisted that she live with them. Lila had nowhere else to go and ended up staying with them. She hated to be imposing but Mary insisted, and she finally relented. Mary stood up, "Well, it's almost 4, I'm going to run to the store real quick. Do you need anything?"

Lila shook her head, "No, I'm fine."

Mary nodded, "Ok..I shouldn't be too long. If Ann calls just tell her to call me back at, say, 7 or something."

"I will."

"Take it easy, ok?"

Lila smiled, "I will.."

Mary gathered her purse and her keys and walked towards the front door, "I'll be back soon."

Lila locked the front door after she saw Mary back out of the driveway and drive down the street. She let out a sigh and walked up the stairs to her room. Being pregnant sucked, to put it mildly. It wasn't at all beautiful or serene. She felt sick, fat, and just plain miserable. She was depressed, no doctor had to tell her that. She had been ever since Scott's funeral and finding out she really was pregnant. She hadn't been back to the cemetary since that day and flat out refused every time Mary or Jack brought it up. She didn't want to...no, she really just couldn't.

Lila stopped in the hallway at the full-length mirror that sat on the wall and looked at herself. She nearly groaned out loud, she even looked miserable. She pushed her way past the mirror and went into her room and sat on the bed to read a book she had been reading for nearly a week.

Kevin stood over the headstone and sighed. The tour had just ended and he flew home to be with his mom and brothers for a few days. His mom had finally talked him into visiting Scott's grave. He sighed and looked towards the cloudless sky as if in a silent prayer. He had also decided it was time to see Lila...he had to make sure she was doing okay. He turned and walked down the hill to his car and drove towards Mary and Jack's place. Ann knew of Lila's pregnancy and knew she was living with Mary and Jack. She had only told Kevin that she was staying there, but did not tell him of the pregnancy. She had to do that herself.

Kevin arrived at the house but it looked like no one was home. He decided to go around back for a little while, just to think, so he got out of the car and walked around the house.

Lila thought she heard something but tried to ignore it. Finally, her curiosity got the best of her and she got up from her comfortable spot on the bed. She walked downstairs and peeked through the sidelight, some car was parked out front but not one she recognized. Usually the only person to come visit was Kevin's mom, Ann. And that wasn't her car.

She walked into the kitchen to find something to eat. She was always hungry now. No matter how much she ate or what she ate, about a half hour later she was starving again. Lila looked down at the small tummy she had and smiled slightly, "I bet you're gonna be a big guy."

She had long ago decided she was going to have a boy. Mary thought for some reason it would be a girl but Lila was sticking with a boy. But everyone had decided that it would be best if it was a surprise. Mary had convinced Lila that it would be a 'wonderful' surprise. Lila was happy that she was going to have a baby, but it would be even more special if Scott were there to help her and everything. But, she knew she was in for it by herself in the long run. And she knew she could do it. She was going to be a good mother...and she would let her baby know all about his/her father and what a wonderful person he was.

Movement caught her attention. Her head jerked to the left. Someone was walking towards the dock. Mary and Jack had a small pond in the backyard, complete with small paddleboat and a dock. Mary had told Lila many times of Kevin and Scott's adventures on that pond.

She moved to the window but still couldn't tell who was out there. She opened the backdoor and walked outside and towards the figure. She knew it was a man, but she couldn't tell WHO it was.

Kevin heard soft footsteps approach him, but he didn't really feel like getting yelled at for trespassing or having to sign an autograph. He had just had just about the longest flight ever and was tired. He stood near the end of the dock, memories flooded over him as he remembered summer after summer and all the mishaps and adventures they would have.

Lila knew who it was as soon as she stopped near the steps that led up to the dock. Kevin.

He stood in front of her, his back rod straight and to her. His hair was a bit longer than she remembered, but he was here. Finally.

Kevin turned and was met with her intense gaze. Those dark blue orbs that could drown a person. Her long, dark hair was longer than last time he had seen her. It flowed well past her shoulders. Her eyes held him for a minute before he broke the gaze. She looked sad, and tired. His eyes drifted downwards and that was when reality finally hit him.

Lila was very, very pregnant.

That shocked the hell out of him, he had had no clue whatsoever.
