Turkey Hunters Tips

Hunting in the Woods

Submitted by Jim Strelec, Knight and Hale

One of the newest trends in the sprint pursuit of the wild turkey is to use a front loader. My choice of muzzleloader is the Knight MK 86. This very effective black powder shotgun is fully equipped for screw-in choke tubes and comes with an extra full choke for your turkey hunting needs. The receiver is drilled and tapped for easy scope installation. It is available with an interchangeable .50 or .54 caliber rifle barrel. This one gun handles my black powder needs-be it waterfowl, deer, elk or turkey.

Having listened to a commonly used expression, "Use equal shot with equal powder" seems to be too hot for me. I’m blowing holes in my pattern. Try using less powder!!

Shot is measured in ounces and powder in grains. You need to know that 1 oz. = 454 grains. I try to keep my velocity between 1120 and 1225 F.P.S. This seems to work much better for me. I hope this will help you take a big longbeard with your muzzleloader next spring!!!

A note from the Editor: If you didn’t recognize the name, Jim is the Struttin’ Turkey that has taught many of us the basics of turkey and deer hunting and calling at the BOW weekends. He has graciously offered to provide hunting tips for our newsletter over the next several issues of Did You KNOW? Thanks Jim!!!!!!
