After you start up and can control the trainer walk down the stairs, you'll notice MOM is waiting for you, she will give you the Pokégear and also tells you how to use it for a phone. Walk out of your house and you should spot a huge building near you, that would be Professor Elm's Lab. Enter and talk to Professor Elm. He will talk to you and ask you to do something for him. He tells you to pick up an item at Mr.Pokémon's house near Cherrygrove City(Route 30). He then gives you a choice of three nice little Pokémon to start off with, Chikorita,Totodile, or Cyndaquil. Chikorita the grass type is strong against Rock,Ground, and Water type Pokémon, but it weak against Flying,Poision, and Fire types. Totodile is strong against Fire,Rock, and Ground types, but has a downfall to Grass and Electric Pokémon. Cyndaquil on the other hand is strong against Grass,Bug, and Ice types, but is weak against Ground,Water, and Rock types.

After making your choice walk out of the Lab and head to Route 29. While you are in Route 29, make sure to train your Pokémon for battles yet to come, make sure to visit every house just in case you might miss something you might want to know. There is a Potion in the upper-right part of Route 29. Keep heading left and enter Cherrygrove City. You might want to buy some stuff and heal your Pokémon. Be sure to talk to the old man in Cherrygrove City and he will give you a MapCard, he is standing near the entrance. Enter Route 30 and head up, you can go to the first house you see which a man there expains about berries, make sure to get the berry right by his house. Head up training your Pokémon a little, make sure to talk to everyone, you should meet up with Youngster Joey who is in the tall grass, when you defeat him you can exchange phone number for a rematch one day. Take the right way and head up more, after walking through alot of tall grass you should see a house, you are at Mr.Pokémon's house! He will give you a weird egg and be sure to talk to Professor Oak and get a Pokédex. Now leave the house and backtrack back to Professor Elm's Lab.
