History & Background
Why a Gerbil?
Gerbils are cute creatures with round beady eyes, attracting a growing number of pet lovers. They are fun to look at and are lively by nature. They are especially intriguing when kept with others of their own species. Gerbils also come in a variety of colors and can be easily hand-tamed. Because they are a desert animal, they drink less water and urinate less, making them practically odor-free! They are as fun to watch as they are to hold! If you are planning to get your first gerbil please make sure that you read all or most of my Care Page because even though they are small creatures they require a lot of responsibility!
Where are they from?
The "Mongolian Desert Gerbil" is as its name suggests a desert animal. In fact they are only 1 of more than 100 different gerbil species that are found living in Africa and Asia. The gerbil's original habitat were the deserts of southern Mongolia and northern China. These areas are know for their super hot summers and extremely cold winters. For these reasons gerbils are very good at surviving temperature variations. Gerbils also drink less water because of their background.
A Gerbil or a Mouse?
Gerbils, despise their appearance, are not anything like mice, or other rodents such as hamsters or rats. For example gerbils have a denser coat and a tail with a bushy tip, while mice have larger ears and no skin on their tails. So people that are normally afraid of mice can enjoy gerbils! They have a nature of being sweet, friendly, and curious that made them great family pets for many years and many more to come.
