Credit where credit is due: This concept came to me after watching old taped eps of "Gargoyles" after a "Sliders" marathon on the Sci-Fi channel. If you like the "Alterverse" stories, you might want to catch the other half of what inspired this series.
SOMEWHERE IN MANHATTAN, JULY 12TH, 1999:
A flash of light streaked across the sky and a hole seemed to tear open in the fabric of reality itself. A shadowy gargoyle form emerged from the vortex and looked about, then spoke into some sort of communicator attached to his headpiece.
"Yes Mother, I have just arrived in the target dimension. The operation shall commence shortly."
A scrambled reply issued forth from the transmitter, and the stranger dove of the building and glided off into the night as the vortex closed in a blinding flash of light
THE EYRIE BUILDING, JULY 12TH, 1999:
A bright flash far in the distance caught Lexington's eye. It was over in a second, but definitely strange.
"Hey Goliath! Something just flashed over on that building!"
"What Lexington?"
"Some sort of flare. It died real fast, but it was really weird. Should we check it out?"
"It is almost sunrise, we wouldn't have time. It was probably just a sign burning out. We can investigate tomorow night."
"All right. I just have a strange feeling about it....."
The sun rose and the conversation was interrupted.
SECRET QUARRYMEN INSTALLATION OUTSIDE N.Y.C. , JULY 13TH, 1999:
"Recruiting rates are dropping, Mr. Castaway."
"Then I do believe we need to do something about it. Arrange a little 'publicity stunt'..."
He was cut short as a massive burst of laser fire cut through the wall of his office and incinerated the guard. He turned in time to see a massive dark blue-skinned gargoyle clad in armor enter through the smoking hole in the wall and stare at him with burning blood red eyes.
"You need not worry about new recruits, Hunter. Your little organization is not going to exist after tonight."
Castaway quickly grabbed for the pistol in his desk, only to find his arm grabbed by a taloned hand.
"Now now, you'll make me think I'm not welcome here!"
With a sadistic sneer he smashed Castaway's arm into the desk. The former hunter screamed as a sickening crack echoed throughout the room and blood gushed from his arm.
"I'm going to be merciful. I'll make this quick."
The gargoyle jammed the barrel of the massive turbolaser cannon he carried into Castaway's mouth, then pulled the trigger.
"Such messy work. A shame really, such a nice chair being stained by this vermin's brains."
He wiped the blood out of his long white ponytail of hair and activated the communicator on his headset.
"First objective has been accomplished. The human known as John Casatway has been terminated. Moving on to second objective."
He reached into his belt pouch and pulled out a strange metal sphere. He climbed out the window and hit a button on the sphere before tossing it back into the room. He headed off into the distance as a loud explosion sounded behind him and the building exploded in a ball of flame.
THE EYRIE BUILDING, JULY 14TH, 1999:
The clan found Elisa waiting for them when they awoke.
"Hey guys. I've got some strange news."
"What is is, Elisa?" Goliath questioned.
"John Castaway and a good number of the Quarrymen have been murdered."
"By who?"
"We're not certain, but it looks like it was done by a gargoyle!"
"Demona?"
"Not likely. The footprints looked almost like yours."
"Thailog? But he died in the amusement park fire!"
"I know. And it couldn't be one of the other clones, since Talon keeps a cloe eye on them. So who could have done it?"
"I don't know, but we must find out. Tonight we will patrol the city and try to find this new gargoyle, whoever he is."
CENTRAL PARK, JULY 14TH, 1999:
The strange gargoyle continued to speak into the transmitter.
"The existence of these "Quarrymen" proved that there is a gargoyle clan somewhere in this sector. I have compiled the data on the weapons and defenses of this World's inhabitants. Comparing their technology level to ours, I would say that it would be easy enough for our forces to conquer. I have also seen no signs of the Triad, perhaps they have finally lost my trail.
However, I have yet to complete my final objective. I have not yet found the gargoyle clan which these "Quarrymen" hunted."
A very familiar voice emitted from the transmitter. The voice of Demona.
"Excellent work, my son. Kill a few of the humans in the vicinity, it should attract their attention."
"Very well, mother."
"Father! Down there! Laser fire!"
Goliath looked down in response to Angela's shout. Screams echoed from below as lasers flashed brightly, lighting up the park below.
"Follow me! Whatever is down there shooting, it cannot be a friend!"
They dived toward the battle below and the screams grew more intense. They saw several smoking corpses littering the ground, and caught a glimpse of a man being burned in half by one of the blasts. It was then they saw the source of the carnage. A tall, dark skinned male gargoyle clad in shining metal armor, his long white hair tied back in a ponytail and his blood red eyes glowing maliciously.
"Thailog?"
The gargoyle looked up and stepped into the light, revealing his extremely dark blue skin and peculiar brow ridges that looked to be a cross of Goliath and Demona's, as well as his wings which ended in small hands at the tips.
"No, not father. I am Azariel, and you are the ones my mother sent me to attend to."
"Father?!?! And who is this 'mother'?"
"Mother told me that you would be surprised. But it really matters little to me. Where is the one called Demona?"
"Far from here, I would hope! It ain't like we need her here to add to our troubles!"
"So she is your enemy?"
"In the truest sense of the word!"
"Then I suppose you are unfit for mother's purpose. And I cannot just let you live and spoil our plans. Prepare to die."
He raised his massive turbolaser cannon and aimed it at the clan.
Suddenly there was a bright flash and a large hole ripped open in the fabric of time and space and three strange gargoyles emerged. One was a dark grey-skinned male clad in a rugged fringed leather vest and pants, his chest marked by several long, jagged scars. The second was an emerald skinned female clad in a ragged tank-top and jeans, and the third loked like a member of the Ishimura clan, his skin a dusky tan than complemented the dark pants he wore. The grey one stared at Azariel with burning sapphire eyes and snarled.
"This is the end of our war, Azariel. We have chased you through the dimensions long enough!"
"Indeed. Your dishonorable way end this night, villain!"
"Who is going to stop me? You? Hahahahahaha! You've been trying for months! And you still haven't been able to accomplish your little mission! I don't particularly feel like another senseless slugfest at the moment, so I'll deal with all of you later!"
With that he vanished from sight, apparently through the use of a cloaking device. The grey gargoyle cursed and then turned to the awestruck Wyvern clan.
"I suppose an explanation is in order. I am called Wildcat, and I work with my two associates here, Skatha and Kiang, in trying to track down the renegade 'Walker you encountered."
"Walker?" Goliath asked, puzzled. the female, Skatha, responded.
"Planeswalker. One who uses wormholes, vortexes in the fabric of reality, to travel between the many different dimensions."
"And how does one travel between these different 'dimensions'?"
"With these." Wildcat said, pointing at the strange belts the three of them wore. "they're called 'Warp Belts'. You program the coordinates of the dimension you seek to visit, and then hit the button in the center of it."
"What can ye tell us about this Azariel, this 'Walker as ye called 'im?"
Kiang stared at Hudson and spoke.
"He is a true villain, who delights in the suffering of others. He travels through the dimensions, surveying worlds for some vile purpose."
Brooklyn stared at Goliath.
"Yeah, right. And the next thing you're gonna tell us is that he's here to destroy the world, and only we can save it. Come on Goliath."
"Goliath? YOU are Goliath?" Wildcat's jaw nearly hit the ground.
"Yes. I am Goliath. Why?"
"I cannot believe this! You were the founder of the Revolution! But how can this be? The Demon Queen killed you before I was even born!"
"What are you talking about? Demon Queen? Revolution?'
Wildcat seemed to regain his senses as Skatha slapped him across the face.
"He apparently is the alternate earth version of the Founder, Wildcat! He doesn't know about any of this!"
"Ungh! You're probably right. Suffice it to say that we're in for it if our interference alters the future of this world."
Elisa's car pulled onto the scene. She opened the door and stepped out.
"Guys, the cops are on their.....What?" She caught a glimpse of the three strange gargoyles.
"Do not be alarmed, human. We are no threat to your people."
An evil laugh echoed loudly and Azariel appeared again, behind Elisa."
"Elisa, behind you!"
"Too late, gargoyle!" Azariel grabbed Elisa and held his gun to her head. "If you ever want to see your friend here alive again, then I guess you'll have to follow me! Hahahahahahaha!"
Azariel hammered the button on his belt and a bright flash of light blinded the clan and the three strangers temporarily. They regained their sight just in time to see Azariel drag Elisa into the vortex. She screamed for a moment, but then grew silent as she was pulled into another dimension with Azariel.
"Elisa!" Goliath roared and leapt into the portal, followed by Brooklyn and Lexington. BEfore the rest of the clan could follow, the gateway collapsed. Angela, Hudson, and Broadway stared at the three gargoyles.
"Where have Father and the others gone?"
"It will be hard to tell. It may take a while to trace Azariel's leap and find out which dimension they will arrive in. But For now, we can only hope that Goliath and the two others who went with him can handle the situation.
EARTH 205, NIGHTWORLD:
Azariel materialized within the vortex, still holding the struggling Elisa. Goliath, Brooklyn, and Lexington were not far behind.
"Ahh, it seems your friends have arrived! Hello, Goliath!"
"Let her go!"
"Very well. She has served my purpose. Farewell for now, but we will meet again!" He released her and vanished again.
"Goliath! Thank God you came!"
"I would never abandon you, Elisa."
"Uhh guys, I think we have a problem. I don't think we're in New York anymore....."
The others looked around and gasped at the strange city they were in. Wherever they were, it was not Manhattan. And they had no clue how to get back home.
