Lunar Eclipse 2000

On the night of January the 20th, observers throughout North America were treated to the best lunar eclipse since early 1997.  This eclipse was the first Total Eclipse since 1996.  At 10:01 pm EST the Moon moved into the Earth's shadow, which you can see in our first picture.  This shadow is called the Earth's Umbra.  Over the next hour, the Earth's shadow slowly moved across the Moon's face.  Through telescopes, the dark portion of the moon was still visible.  It was easy to watch the umbra slowly sweeping across various craters and plunging them into darkness.
