This image of Mars is a mosaic of images taken by the Viking orbiter spacecraft in 1976. This image is also public domain and copyright free. This view of Mars is similar to what you would see in a spacecraft orbiting the Red Planet. The long scar-like feature in the center is Valles Marineris, a huge canyon more than 1800 miles long and 5 miles deep in places. On the left side of the image, the three Tharsis volcanoes are visible, the largest of which is Olympus Mons. Visit the Valles Marineris Page at Views of the Solar System.
