Backstreet Boys on Love

Brian
1. Have you ever been in love?

"I thought I was in love once. Her name was Shannon. We grew up together and I went out with her for four months. I found her very cool, but it wasn't until I started going out with her that I got to know her. I decided then that she wasn't really my type."

2. Describe the girl of your dreams?

"She has long hair, but the colour isn't important. What is though, is her personality. She must know what she wants and she must know how to obtain it. Sadly, amongst the girls I've been going out with, I haven't yet met the one of my dreams. I like Sandra Bullock 'cos her look is unique. You can easily see that she doesn't think she is the most beautiful thing on earth. She's nice and pretty like any other normal girl, the only difference is she's a big star!"

3. What's more important to you - physical appearance or personality?

"Of course I like to look at pretty girls in the street. What average hot-blooded boy doesn't? But from past experience I know that most of these girls are very snobbish. That's why I think personality goes before anything.

4. Would you go out with a fan?

"Yes, no problem! When we're on tour we meet a lot of fans but I haven't got enough time to get to know them. This is why I enjoy so much when we have a break, 'cos it allows me to meet other people - people outside the group. I like to spend an evening just talking to a girl. When you spend as much time as I do with a bunch of boys, the change is very much welcome. But our lives are a total nightmare at the moment. It would be very hard to find love that would understand my lifestyle.

1. Have you ever been in love?

"Yes, with my ex-girlfriend Marissa. We went out together for two years, from April 1994. We sometimes see each other, but our relationship isn't serious like it was before. I sometimes hope that one day we might get back together again."

2. What's the most romantic thing you've ever done?

"It was durig our first aniversary. Marissa was on her way back home and there was this big parcel waiting for her. I wrote on the outside, 'To Marissa with all my love - Alex'. When she opened the present, I jumped on her with a bunch of roses and a bottle of champagne. There's nothing like it to gain a girl's heart."

3. What type of girl attracts you?

"I particularly like ones who have a strong personality, charisma and are sure of themselves. I also like girls with a sense of humour, who like to laugh. Physical looks are not important. Geena Davis has a smashing smile, fleshy lips, and now that she's blonde she's even more beautiful. She seems like a nice person, going by what she says in interviews. She seems very down-to-earth and homely, two qualities I look for in a girl."

4. Have you ever had your heart broken?

"When I was 13, my girlfriend Christy died in a car accident. It was a terrible shock. When I spli up with my last girlfriend Marissa it was really horrible too. I was completely madly in love with her. We decided to seperate in August last year 'cos I was always in Europe with Backstreet Boys and we didn't have time to see each other. I was depressed for weeks, nobody could get near me."

5. Would you date a fan?

"Of course. In fact it has already happenned. When fans put a phone number in their letters, I always phone them to ask how are they doing. I have this strange habit that when I see a phone I have to call somebody. Girls don't believe it's me and always hang up the phone. I love our fans. They are really nice, especially when you realise that no-one knew us two years ago."

1. How far would you go for love?

"All the way. I'd give the girl flowers, take her out for a romantic dinner... the whole deal. I've even gone after girls who didn't like me. When I'm in love, nothing can stop me!"

2. How would you define love?

"Above the sexual aspects, love is to be great friends with someone. My girlfreind must be my best friend. I like honesty, and the idea that no-one hurts each other. I know I'll be in love the day I meet the girl of my life."

3. Describe your ideal girl?

"I prefer natural girls to sophisticated snobbish ones. I like all kinds of girls, really - I don't have any specific type. They can be big or small, blonde or ginger... it doesn't matter. I like bright and sincere girls. I like to feel that the girl I'm talking to doesn't just think I speak a lot of rubbish."

4. How do you show a girl you really care about her?

"The best way is to keep your eyes on her when you're out somewhere. To assure her that she's the only one you need. I don't like to have a steady girlfriend, though, but I do like to go on dates. That way, there's no commitment to any person but plenty of girls to go out with!"

5. Do you remember your first snog?

"When I was 12 at my friends birthday party, we were playing a game of spin the bottle. I got my first kisses from the three best-looking girls in the school. It was the best party ever."

Kevin
1. What kind of of girl do you go for?

"I don't have a specific type but I like the ones who dress sexy and classy at the same time. That doesn't mean that they have to wear mini skirts. I like to spend time with a girl I like, just to talk and get to know her. Physical appearance isn't important. The important thing is being able to speak to each other as equals. She must be clever and sure of herself."

2. Are you snogging anyone at the moment?

"No, we're all as free as the air. It does get a little lonely I guess. Sometimes I tell myself that love is a waste of time. There are just too many good-looking girls in the world to want to settle down with one. If I had to choose, it would be a toss between Michelle Pfeiffer and Elle MacPherson. I prefer girls with a nice smile and a good sense of humour."

3. Have you ever been involved in a serious relationship?

"I was engaged when I was 19. I was far to young. Beth and me went out together for a year. We thought we were meant for each other. In fact, we eventually realised that we had nothing in common. At the time, my father had just died of cancer and I needed a relationship to have some comfort."

4. Have you ever two-timed a girl?

"Yes, I have. It just sorta happened. I felt very guilty afterwards and vowed I would never cheat on a girl again. You have to be honest with someone if you're in a relationship, otherwise you'll never be happy."

5. What's the most romantic thing you'd ever done?

"One day my girlfriend had to get up very early to go to the doctor. I got up at five o 'clock and prepared breakfast for her. Freshly-squeezed orange juice, muesli and bananas, toast and coffee. I picked some flowers from the garden and put them in a small vase on the breakfast tray. I slipped quietly into her bedroom and put the tray down at her side. She was delighted."

Nick
1. What do you look for in a girl?

"I like girls with long hair and a strong personality. A girl who is always agreeing with me would be a bit boring. I like the challenge, I like to take risks, like having an argument for instance. There are no dream girls, though. None who really crack me up. But I hate girls who smoke, have bad breath, or think they're better than anyone else."

2. When you meet girls who you don't recognise you, do you tell them you're a heartthrob pop star?

"I never get into the details, even though I'm very proud of what I do. I just say I work in showbusiness and leave it at that. I can be shy around girls. The other guys have got far more experience than me."

3. Would you snog a fan?

"Yes, why not!We like to have a good relationship with our fans. I could go out with one of them but I don't think that it could become serious. We haven't got time to see our family and friends so how would I find time for a serious realtionship? It would be too hard on the girl."

4. Don't you think chat up lines are a bit cheesy?

"It depends on what you say, and how you say it. Jokey lines can be cheesy - especially if they're old. My dad still says to my mum, 'You're the sweetest flower in the garden'. I'd never say that to a girl. We all have our own way of chatting up girls in the group. We all have our own charming individual personalities. To be honest, we all like to chat up girls. Flirting is always good fun."
