There are many myths within our world regarding sexual violence. Because it is vital for people who are close to survivors to know the facts about it to help their friends, I am providing this list.

Intercourse is not necessary for an act to constitute sexual violence.
Children DO NOT seduce adults.
Sexual violence has occurred, and continues to, in all types of societies world wide.
Acts of sexual violence are NOT prompted by a physical illness.
Most people are not insane when they molest children. Data indicate less than five percent of molesters show clinical evidence of psychosis (loss of contact with reality) at the time of their offenses.
There is no general description that will fit all sexual molesters. They are all races, genders, intelligence levels, religions, sexual orientations, etc.
Frequently, molesters were victims of molestation.
A majority of child molesters know their victims.
Any child can be victimized, be they friendly or reclusive.
The use of alcohol or drugs should not minimize or justify the sexual offense.
Molestations by young offenders (even the very young) should be treated with the same concern and care as those by older offenders.
Most sex offenders repeat the act many times before apprehended.
Rape and abuse is about control, not sex.
