ANGEL

Nick watched the young girl from afar, the girl he knew and loved so well.  The one he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.  Tears cascaded down her cheeks and sobs rocked her body, as she knelt down in front of the grave.

One word kept repeating itself over and over in her head.  Why?  She remembered the accident as if it happened yesterday, but in reality it was over a month ago.  A month which was filled with nothing but pain, not only for her, but most of the world.  They had lost an amazing person and a role model for many young people.  Nick took a step closer, but went unnoticed by the girl for obvious reasons.

She closed her eyes in an attempt to stop the tears, but she was only faced with horrible memories.

Tires screeching, metal crashing, and the shrill sound of sirens in the distance.  Looking at the body hunched over the steering wheel, trying to call out to him, as someone pried her door open.  A man pulling her out and leading her to an ambulance, the only words coming out of her mouth was his name.

She remembers opening her eyes, with great difficulty.

“She’s awake!” Someone yells, sounding miles away.  She focuses her eyes, but only sees bright lights above her, and the silhouettes of what seems like hundreds of people.

‘Where am I?’ she asks herself, not able to speak out loud, a mask covering her face.  She feels as if she has weights on her chest, making it difficult to breathe.  Then everything goes black.

When she finally awakes the solemn faces of friends and family greet her.  When giving them questioning looks, they all avoid her eyes.

“What’s going on?” she asks, her voice coming out in a strained whisper.  Her mother moves to a chair beside her bed and gently takes her hand.

“Honey, we have some bad news…”

“What?” she asks, trying to lift her head, but groans in pain.  She rests it back down on her pillow, which feels unusually hard because of the bandages wrapped around her head.

“He-he’s dead…”

She shakes her head, hoping it was a sick joke.  Her mother nods slightly, tears falling from her eyes, leaning down to hug her daughter as they both cry.

She opened her eyes again, looking at the ground.  Flowers surrounded her; clouds covering the sky, making the world seem dark, matching the way many people felt.

Nick took yet another step closer, again going unnoticed.

The girl kissed her fingers, before running them lightly over the name which marked who was resting peacefully under the soft soil.

Nick Carter

Her eyes moved down to the inscription that had been made especially for him.  Fresh tears clouded her vision as she read the message for the hundredth time.

We know you’re blessing
 Everyone in Heaven with
 Your voice, singing
 With the angels, as you
 Did here on earth,
Singing with the Backstreet
 Boys.  We love you.

She smelled the white rose she was holding one more time, before setting it down, making it stand out among the red ones.  She stood up as Nick took another step, until he was standing right beside her.  He placed a hand on her shoulder, and gently kissed her cheek.  She wrapped her arms around herself tighter, as she felt a sudden breeze.

“I love you,” she said quietly before looking up at the sky.  Nick stepped behind her, and moved his head towards her ear.

“I’m gonna watch over you until you’re with me again.”

She smiled slightly to herself suddenly feeling at peace.  She gracefully turned around, and headed back to her car.  Nick watched the whole time, whispering comforting words to himself, knowing in her heart she could hear him.

 “I’ll always be your angel.”
