Brian looked down also, then back up at his girlfriend.
“You know, you’re right,” he said sheepishly. Staci stared at him, not saying anything.
“Uh, honey, are you mad?” Brian asked in a tiny voice. Staci let out a yell in frustration, and turned around again.
“Where are you going?” Brian asked carefully, jogging up to catch her.
“Maybe if we go back, we can find the path again,” Staci uttered through clenched teeth. Brian squeezed his eyes shut at her tone, and followed closely behind, being careful not to do or say anything that would set her off. Staci crossed her arms in front of her, and kept walking in a hurried pace.
‘I knew we’d get lost!! That’s his only fault, not being able to keep track of where he’s going! He’s got to have the worst sense of direction out of anyone I’ve ever met!’ Staci thought to herself in a huff. She took a few deep breaths, trying to calm herself down. After all, Brian couldn’t help his over confidence, which unfortunately leads to his stupidity. He only has a billion girls screaming after him every day. That’s gotta do something to his ego. Staci stopped walking, put her bag down, and reached into it, pulling out a bottle of water, and a bag of chips. She opened the water, and took a big gulp, then grabbed a few chips to munch on. Brian went up, and looked at her.
“Can I have some?” he asked slowly, giving her cute little puppy-dog eyes. Staci sighed loudly, and handed over the bottle. He grinned, before taking a sip, the grabbed some food.
“Thank you sweety,” Brian said appreciatively. Staci cracked a small smile, before continuing on her long walk again. Brian followed, but decided to walk a little closer than before.
“I’m really sorry that I got us in this mess. If it wasn’t for me we would be in a nice warm sleeping bag in our cozy tent together. You were right, you’re always right, and I’m always wrong, and I’ll always remember that from now one. I don’t want you to…” Brian said in a rush, before being cut off by Staci.
“Brian, it’s OK, honestly. All we have to do is find the path again, and keep following it. I think I know which direction our campsite is located in. I’ll just figure it out. First we gotta find the trail,” Staci ordered. She brought the chip bag towards Brian again. He took some and gratefully, linking arms with hers. He started skipping along, pulling his sweetheart along with him.
“You’re awfully happy for someone who’s lost in the woods,” Staci laughed.
“Yeah, but I think of the good side,” Brian grinned.
“And what would that be?”
“That if we get lost forever, you’re here with me. I would be able to spend the rest of my life with you, just like I intended, except we wouldn’t exactly be living in a nice big house, with kids. Well, we could have kids, but they would really screwed up, living in the wild. They would be like that guy from Jungle Book.”
“Brian!” Staci laughed. “That’s the sweetest, yet most disturbing thing I’ve heard!”
“I try,” Brian shrugged.
“And you do a good job of it,” Staci smiled, kissing his cheek. Brian turned his head to capture her lips with his. He kissed her sweetly for a moment, before she pulled away.
“Enough for now. We should try to find our way back. I’m getting tired, and I don’t feel like sleeping out in the cold.”
“Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll find the path… AAHH!!” Brian cried, as he fell to the ground. Staci doubled over laughing. After getting her laughter to a small giggle, she looked at Brian who was watching her, a pout on his face, his arms crossed in front of his chest. Staci reached her hand out to help him up. He got to his feet, brushed himself off, and looked to see what he stumbled over. Staci’s eyes lit up.
“Brian!” she said excitedly.
“What? It’s a log. Since when is a log so special? Especially one I fell over,” Brian mumbled.
“NO! Look behind the log! It’s a dirt road! We’re back on track, literally!” Staci said, giving Brian a hug.
“Hey! Watch it! Not so tight! I think I broke something on my way down,” he whined, rubbing his back.
“C’mon! As soon as we’re back to the site, I’ll give you a back rub.”
Brian’s eyes got really big.
“Hurry up! I wanna get back!” he jumped up, before putting his hand behind him and cringing from pain. Staci brought her hand to his, and made small circle motions with her hand to relieve some of the pain before they started their walk back. Brian winced a bit, before sighing.
“Thank you baby. It feels a bit better now. Let’s go,” he urged, pushing her lightly in front of him. She walked up a big, looking around at her surroundings. She pulled out a flashlight from her pack really quickly, then putting the chips and water back in before going on. She shone the light around, trying to see if anything looked familiar. She saw a distinguishable tree, one, which had a big heart-shaped hole in the middle.
“I think I remember seeing this at the beginning of our walk. We’re getting close,” Staci informed her boyfriend.
“I think it knew we were coming. Look at the shape,” Brian smiled. Staci grinned back, and kept up her trekking. Brian followed, ignoring the pain in his back. Staci let out a shout of joy, and turned to Brian.
“Look! I think I see our stuff!”
Brian smiled, and grabbed her arm, bringing them faster towards their destination. He reached their tent, opened it, and flopped down onto the sleeping bag.
“I’m so tired!” he complained.
“Yeah, me too,” Staci said, lying down beside him. “Do you want your back rub now? You looked like you were really in pain back there.”
Brian nodded eagerly. After getting on his stomach, Staci straddled his upper legs, giving herself enough room to reach all of his back. She started at the top, moving her hands rhythmically, kneading out all the sore, tense muscles. She made her way down to his lower back, hearing content sighs coming from Brian. Without warning, Brian rolled over onto his back, then moving down so Staci was now sitting on his lower stomach. He sat up and planted a kiss on her lips.
“Thank you baby. You always know how to make me feel better,” he said sweetly. Staci smiled.
“You’re very welcome. I think I want to get ready for bed now. I’m so tired!” she yawned, adding to the effect. Brian smiled lovingly at her.
“I’ll leave then, so you can get your beautiful self ready. I’ll go make sure the fire is completely put out, even though I don’t know why it wouldn’t be. It was out before we left.”
Staci nodded.
“It’s better to be safe then sorry,” she smiled. Brian smiled back before closing the zipper on the tent. She quickly disrobed and got herself into her pajamas. She opened up the cloth door, telling Brian she was done. He quickly got changed, and helped her in. He got comfortable on his side of the sleeping bag. He held one side up, giving Staci room to get in. Once she was comfortable, he zipped it up, wrapping his arm around her waist from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder.
“I had a really good time today,” he said softly, before kissing her lightly on the neck. Staci sighed.
“Me too.”
“Do you know what I just realized?” Brian asked.
“What?” Staci replied sleepily.
“We didn’t actually eat a proper diner. All we had was that junk stuff, but we didn’t even finish that because of the marshmallow incident, then a few chips on our way back here.”
“Oh well. I’m not that hungry. I kinda lost most of my appetite thinking we may get stuck in the woods forever,” Staci mumbled, trying to stay awake.
“Yeah, I guess that’s what happened to me cause
I don’t feel hungry, and you know me, I could eat…” he stopped talking
when he heard her steady breathing. Brian smiled to himself, and
kissed her shoulder gently, before laying his head down on his pillow.
He pulled her as close to him as possible and closed his eyes. Soon
sleep overcame him; the last thoughts in his mind were how much he loved
the girl sleeping next to him.
