The History of First Christian Church

First Christian has a wealth of fascinating and inspiring history that reflects the growth and development of Henderson, Kentucky.

The Earliest Days

Like so many American churches, the first families of our church met in member's homes, until the construction of the first sanctuary in 1854. This building, considered a showplace of the community, was located on what is now the corner of Washington and Green Street. Among the outstanding features of this structure was the beautiful steeple, which dominated the small town's landscape for many years.

A place of worship

The interior of the sanctuary in the early 1900's. The sanctuary had recently installed electric lighting, and was noted for its grand pipe organ and wood framed baptistry.

Growth and Organization

In the early part of the 20th century the building was modified with the removal of the classic steeple and the addition to the front of the building of a wing of classrooms and offices.
