Zine Rivews

I try to review as many zines as I can get my hands on. I think that it’s a pretty important task, because zines have little other way to get the word spread. I can’t think of any zines that have promo pictures, tours, or even a very easy time of getting into distributors. Few very zines can afford to place ads so that leaves reviews as the only real way of getting exposure.
So, the short version of a long story is that it would be really nice if you would take the time to order one or two zines from this section. Four or five bucks from you might mean a whole lot to some of these zine editors. Not to mention that most of the media in the United States is owned by five or so corporations. Small newspapers and magazines are becoming a thing of the past. Well, that’s the speech of the issue for promoting freedom of the press. (not to mention a little self rightous outburst on account of: it’s awfully easy to get some kid to buy 2 or 3 copies of the same record on different colors of vinyl. But, it’s awfully hard to get em to shell out a dollar or two for a zine.)
Prices are usually estimations of the postage paid cost. I would recommend tossing in a couple stamps or extra dollar to be sure. For overseas orders (u.s. to overseas or overseas to u.s.) I would guess at least four dollars.

Backstabber #2Full sized Xeroxed $1.00 Lots of pictures and a few columns most of which focus on straight edge or animal rights. Also contains two short and to the point interviews with Trial and V.O.D. This has potential if they would expand a bit in their scope and consider doing some of the interviews in person. 507 S. Main #1003, Enorwood OH 45322

Fifth Seal #2 Full sized Xeroxed $2 These kids are unabashedly representin’ the Christian side of hardcore with a little Lake Effect action thrown in. Interviews with Neverfall and The Tenth. I got a really poor impression of the members of The Tenth, they had 'some girl' in the band but they kicked her out. (guess she didn’t have a name ) and if you can’t hear the lyrics you’re deaf or 'retarded'. They certainly didn’t come across as very positive. Then again things come out different in print than they do when said, so maybe it sounds worse than they are. Besides from that this is a really sincere attempt from which I think there is the potential for a really solid zine to develop. They ask the bands a really funny question about signing to Death Row Records which leads to some extremely amusing answers. 1429 Davison, Harborcreek, PA 16421

Friction #2 Full sized Xeroxed $2 Lots of writing, some personal and some political. It’s a really good mix of material. All the writing is honest and unguarded. It’s a style of zine that is unfortunately disappearing because it really gives character to the scene. 1117 Patunia, Hartiville, OH 44632

Fueled By Hate #1 Full Sized Xeroxed. $1 or postage You ever really want to say things how they are? Totally call people out on their bullshit behavior? Well I present to you ,Steve Titus,- no holds barred. He says it just as it is from kids who only go to shows when their band is playing to “scene unity”. (an oxymoron if I’ve ever heard one). Anyway, if your tired of reading fanzines who tell you want you want to hear then Fueled by Hate is the answer. 77 Zittel St. Buffalo NY 14210

Hodgepodge #3 Full sized Newsprint $2 I can’t imagine cramming much more into a zine than they did with this issue. I think the font is eight point all the way through. So don’t read it if you have a headache but if you are looking for a few hours of reading then Hodgepodge would be a good idea. Interviews with Delta 72, Sleepytime Trio, Jason Farrell (of Bluetip fame) Indecision, and Sons of Abraham. The graphic design/layout is pretty unique. They don’t rip off another style or appear so arty that you can’t read it. It’s a good zine with a wide variety of music covered. Michael 432 Red Jacket Quad, Suny Buffalo, Buffalo NY 14261.

In Effect #11 Full sized Newsprint/glossy cover $2 It always amazes me when I realize how self contained the NYHC scene is. In Effect covers primarily NYHC bands, labels, and zines without really needing any outside support. Well, this seems to cover every aspect of NYHC so if you’re into that stuff In Effect will prove to be an invaluable resource for you. Interviews with Cold Front, Indecision, Sheer Terror and more. Plus a very useful column about hardcore sites on the Internet. P.O. Box 710060, La Guardia Airport Station, Flushing NY 11371-0060.

Innocence Regained #1 Half sized Xeroxed $1 This is the first fanzine that I’ve seen in awhile that provides information on animal rights and straight edge. It seems like most zines skip that stuff now in effort to appeal to a wider audience. Even though I knew most of this information it’s cool to refresh my memory and learn a few new facts. There was an article by Rod Coronando about his capture and activities. In addition to this were some really interesting pieces on truth in advertising, sexual objectification, and graffiti. It’s packed with lots of interesting stuff to read and void of any band interviews. Hell it’s worth buying for that alone. At least he has the courage to release a zine on it’s own merits without interviews with some popular bands to insure it sells. P.O Box 13274 Chicago IL 60613

Mafia- #1 Full Sized Xeroxed $2.00 Here is a new fanzine from the infamous Dayton Ohio. This is a solid first effort that has a very straight edge base. (of course it’s straight edge it’s from Dayton) The interviews consist of Hatebreed, Earthmover, Warzone and Overcast. I’d like to see more writing from the editor as the zine should be a place for her to express her ideas and not just for the bands who are interviewed. I hope she sticks with it and does another issue because hardcore needs more participation from females. I highly recommend ordering one and supporting a sincere effort to improve the hardcore community. 204 Alberta St. Dayton OH 45410

M.A.G. #1 Full-sized Newsprint $2 This is my favorite new zine. The writing and interviews are awesome. The editors reveal a lot of themselves in what they say and are very sincere in what they express. It’s not your typical "big" zine feel, where the reader feels separated from the magazine. Interviews with Despair, Texas is the Reason, Downset, Neurosis, Type O Negative, Descendents, Better Than A Thousand and many more. P.O. Box 30374, Indpls, IN 46230-0374

Old Goat #2 Half Sized Xeroxed $1 Old style cut and paste zine. It seems to have a local focus on the Cincinnati scene and contains interviews with Hardship, Spodie, Intense School of Wrestling, Ton, and Witchhunt. It’s cool to see some people doing zines just to support their scene or bring a little attention where they think it’s needed. Kevin 1117 Purcell Ave Cinti, OH, 45205

Phase One #3 Full sized Xeroxed $2 Oh yeah, this zine is dope. He’s honest about himself and his beliefs. Not to mention he isn’t overly concerned with being cool. Plus, hey, he’s even got a sense of humor. There is a great guide to scene point and tons of great personal writings. The combination makes it a fantastically entertaining zine. Also, if you are determined to read a band interview there is a Sick of It All one in here. You better represent some hardcore pride and buy this one. Eric, 104 Paris LN Summerville SC 29483.

Poop Stain #1 Full sized. Xeroxed $1 This is a funny kid. I think he might be clinically crazy but that’ s beside the point. I couldn’t even begin to guess where he got the name for his zine nor do I think I want to know. This issue has interviews with One King Down, Dave Quiggle, the Go Go Rays and Ray Cappo. If you order it, he asks that you not write poop stain on the envelope ‘cause his mom might not like that. While I was still laughing at that I read the interview with Dave Quiggle. In that he asks Dave if he draws naked women because if he (the editor) could draw well, that’s what he would do. That made me laugh even harder. Joe Nolan 2214 Taggert St. Erie PA 16510

Retrogression #13 Full sized Newsprint $2 Retrogression is one of the best political zines out there. Dave covers a wide variety of issues and always does his homework on them. All of his articles are well researched and very factually based. I think that this zine is really defining the direction that more zines should take. It’s honest, sincere and he doesn’t kiss any ass to make friends. I have the utmost respect for that. Dave P.O. Box 815, Norton, MA 02766.

Sliver #2 Full sized Processed $2 This is awesome. Glossy cover and all that shit that make me envious. They have interviews with machine Head, Kiss It Goodbye, Limp Bizkit, Ink and Dagger, Man, Will Surrender, Snapcase, and Botch. In addition to these bands there are some great articles. 27 Commercial St. Gloucester, MA

Slug and Lettuce #52 11x17 Newsprint postage This is the punk rock resource. It combines hundreds of zine and record reviews with fantastic personal writings. The best thing about this magazine is how totally open minded they are. While the editor herself is not straight edge she doesn’t feel threatened by people who are. It’s a true example of the punk and hardcore communities interacting in a positive manner and should serve as an example of how things should be. P.O. Box

26632 Richmond VA 23261-6632

Straight Force #3 Full sized Newsprint $2 There is nothing I like more in a zine that a sarcastic sense of humor. Parts of this zine had me rolling. I totally relate to the frustrations that they express. Straight Force seems to focus on old school stuff but they seem to have a pretty good knowledge of punk and ska to accompany it. This issue has Ensign, Upfront, 25 Ta Life, Tenfold, Fastbreak, and lots of entertaining articles. 49 Crestdale Rd. Glastonbury, CT 06033.

The Right Path #2 and #3 Full sized Xeroxed $1 These are two separate issues but I decided to review them together because I’m lazy and would like to finish these reviews sometime this month. Issue two has interviews with Kung Fu Rick, Fall Silent, and some reviews. Lots of pictures and even some pretty cool shots of graffiti. The Fall Silent guys didn’t improve my impression of their intellect with this interview. They suggest you steal CD’s from labels you don’t want to support or copy them. Copying them works, but hey kids, guess who you are hurting if you steal CD’s from a store? Just the record store because they have already paid the label for the CD. What do you think they do? Call Victory and say "I’m sorry some kids stole all the Earth Crisis CDs so we won’t be paying you for them" Anyway, back to the zine. Issue three has interviews with Enemy Soil, I Hate You and Catharsis plus more graffiti. I’d like for the interviews to be a little longer because they cover pretty interesting bands that haven’t had much prior exposure. Oh yeah, there is also a bunch of reprinted flyers, which is something that doesn’t happen in zines much anymore, but I wish it would. 49 Wilcox St., Rochester, NY 14607

True School #3 Half Sized Xeroxed $2 That’s it, I’m taking this kid hostage. Great layout and great writing make me wish he would quickly put out lots more issues. So, the only solution is to kidnap him and force him to live in my basement, while churning out fanzines for the enjoyment of the hardcore community. Ask not what your scene can do for you, but what you can do for your scene. Bill, 2550 E. 44th St. Erie, PA 16510

Quarantine #5 Full-sized Xeroxed $2 This zine is awesome. Unfortunately this is his last issue. Fortunately, I stole him for ISA. So in the future he will be writing and contributing in these pages. (He also has an article in this one, Chris Hardaway- Check it out.) Tons of interviews including Outspoken, Disciple, Warzone, Trial, Gameface, Strife, Despair, and Shockwave. He also has over 100 great photos of bands. 6208 Gradys Walk, Bowie MD 20715
