Foster/Forester : In the English Middle Ages, the forests and woods were almost always owned or controlled by the lord of the manor -- but people had no reservations about sneaking in and taking firewood, game, or whatever else they might require. To keep the poaching to a minimum, the lord retained a man to watch the forest -- often called a Forester, and sometimes called a Foster. The name stuck as an English Occupation surname when they became adopted.

Last Will and Testament of Grover C. Foster
I, Grover C. Foster, of Ashland, Boyd County, Kentucky, being more than twenty-one years of age, and of a sound and disposing mind and memory, and free from any undue influence or influences whatsoever, do hereby and by these presents make, publish and declare the within instrument of writing to be my last will and testament, hereby revoking and repudiating any and all wills heretofore made by me.
Item No. 1. I direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid out of my estate as soon as practical after my decease.
Item No. 2. All the rest of residue of my estate, both real and personal or every kind and description and wheresoever situate which I may own or have the right to dispose of at the time of my decease, I give, devise and bequeath unto my beloved wife, Florence Foster, absolutely and in fee simple, so that she may or shall have the absolute right to use, enjoy sell and dispose of same as she may desire.
Item No. 3. It is my will and I desire it to be understood that to the marriage of myself and said wife there has been born four children, viz: Madeline M. Foster, Phoebe J. Foster, Walter J. Foster, and Robert L. Foster, and I also desire it to be understood that to a former marriage of myself there was born the following named children, viz: Helen Foster Reynolds, Thelma E. Foster, Avonella A. Foster and Grover C. Foster, Jr., and I direct that my said wife shall give or pay to each of the above named children the sum of $1.00, and to any other child or children that may be born to our said marriage.
