TITLE: Fool Moon

AUTHOR: Jim Butcher

Publisher: RoC January 2001

Book Description:

Business has been slow. Okay, business has been dead. And not even of the undead variety. You would think Chicago would have a little more action for the only professional wizard in the phone book. But lately, Harry Dresden hasn't been able to dredge up any kind of work--magical or mundane.

But just when it looks like he can't afford his next meal, a murder comes along that requires his particular brand of supernatural expertise.

A brutally mutilated corpse. Strange-looking paw prints. A full moon. Take three guesses--and the first two don't count.

REVIEW:

Could a werewolf be loose in Chicago? Common sense says no. The grisly evidence says yes. So does Harry Dresden. And with his weird connections, he should know....

The claw marks, pawprint, and carnage look as if a werewolf is on the loose, even though most Chicago residents scoff at the notion. After working with wizard Harry Dresden on a previous case, Special Investigative Officer Karrin Murphy accepts Harry's help on her most recent case. The honorable Harry would love to walk away and allow the humans to make a mess of things, but in good conscience knows an "I told you so," means nothing. Harry and Karrin track the werewolf to environmentalist Harley MacFinn, but just because he is one doesn't necessarily mean he is the killer. Perhaps his shapechanging girlfriend Tera or a group of young people receiving special tutoring on the finer points of lycanthropy 101 are the culprits. As a dark side of a bruised Harry surfaces, he struggles to survive a war not of his making.

Harry Dresden is a unique character in this urban fantasy sub-genre. Harry is a maverick whose mouth seems to get him in as much trouble as his actions. He is a smartass know-it-all, but cannot stop himself from saving humanity in spite of their ridicule. FOOL MOON is a fast-paced fascinating noir thriller that keeps the readers interest.
