Title: East Of Peculiar

Author: Suzann Ledbetter

Publisher: Mira
June 2000

Review:

After twenty years of working in a high pressure job at a Chicago advertising agency, Hannah Garvey decides to quit the rat race. She accepts a position as the resident manager for the upscale Missouri retirement community of Valhalla Springs. She hopes this job will finally allow her to relax.

Her first week on her new job requires Hannah to reassess her thoughts of peace and quiet when someone murders an elderly resident. To her surprise, Hannah finds herself attracted to the head of the homicide investigation, County Sheriff Dave Hendrickson who is seven years her junior. Her being older than David disturbs Hannah and she has a hard time getting past the age thing.

The personalities of the elderly residents of the retirement community and their actions are a major reason the story line is so enjoyable. The publisher labeled this book a romance, though--it's not strickly a romance. It's clearly intended to be an ongoing mystery series, and labeling it romance means the book misses alot of its targeted mystery audience and the romance reader will find it lacking in the romance department. While I did enjoy the story and will read this author's next book in the series, I did find the humor at times labored, and the focus of the book not as tight as it could have been-- it neither focuses on the romance or the mystery so what you're left with is really women fiction.

VERY GOOD
