REBEL ROCK

Harlan County like all of Kentucky was divided as to sympathy. It is said that most of the residents on Poor Fork and Pine Mountain and Strait Creek and some Cumberland River folks were on the side of the Union while residents of Clover Fork, Martin's Fork, Catron's Creek, the lower end of Cumberland River, Cumberland Ford, Clear Creek and Yellow Creek were southern sympathizers. Some of the residents called it the "War of the Rebellion" and people in sympathy with the Confederate side were called "Rebels." There is a large overhanging rock cliff about four miles north of the county seat, which was called "Rebel Rock." This rock was used by Rebel scouts to hide under the reconnoiter which would furnish a quick hiding place for scouts if they encountered unfriendly groups.(Pine Mountain, U.S. 421)
