What More Could You Ask For?

By Mel Syryda

"Hey guys, guess who I got a letter from today?" Lance asked, coming outside to see Chris, Joey, Justin and J.C. who were playing an intense game of basketball.

"Who?" asked Justin, flying by Lance with ball in hand.

"Rebecca."

"What’d she say?" asked J.C., suddenly losing interest in the game and waking over to Lance.

"Here read for yourself, she left a little note for all of you," he said, handing the letter to J.C.

The letter read:

Hey Lance!

How are you guys? Things are fine here, although a little dull now that you guys are back on the road. When are y’all coming home again? I miss you! Since I don’t have a lot of time, I'm just gonna make this to all of you guys:]

Joey- did ya hear? There’s a huge superman expo coming here? You should hop a plane and be my date.

Chris- the polls are in and we’ve all decided you need to cut your hair.

Justin- sneaker sale! All week long, there’s a huge sneaker sale at the mall and you aren’t here to go shopping with me!

Lance- did you hear? There’s 10 new beanie babies coming out at the end of the month? I know who’ll be first in line for those!

J.C.- hey, how are you doing? Good I hope. I really miss you.

Well that’s all for now. I’ll talk to you all later.

Love, Becky

By this time, everyone had lost interest in the game and was reading the letter over J.C.’s shoulder.

"Hey, what does she mean ‘we think you need to cut your hair?’" Chris asked, "I thought she liked my hair."

"She does Chris, she’s just teasing," J.C. informed him.

"How do you know?"

J.C. looked at Chris.

"Oops, Wrong person to ask," Chris muttered. Not only did J.C. know Becky better then any of them since he had known her longer, but he has had a huge crush on her for the past year and a half.

"Looks like we’re missing a lot at home," Joey observed, looking a little crest fallen. It was moments like these that always made the guys feel a little homesick.

"It sounds like Becky’s pretty homesick herself," Justin concluded. They all knew Rebecca didn’t really live in Orlando, her home is in the same place J.C.’s is, in Maryland, Washington, and she moved out to Florida with J.C.

"We should fly her out to see us for a couple of days, I know I’d love to see her," Lance suggested.

"Do I have any objections?" Chris asked, knowing very well there wouldn’t be any. "Ok, we can call her after lunch and tell her to get her tail down here."

‘Ring, Ring’

"Hello?"

"Hi Rebecca, it’s-"

"J.C., I know," she finished for him, "how are you?"

"I'm fine, and you?"

"Good. I miss you though."

"That’s why I'm calling. We got your letter today."

"Ok…."

"And we were wondering if you wanted to come visit us on the road for a while."

"Really?" she asked.

"Yeah."

"Sure, I’d love to."

"Great. What have you got planned for next week?" J.C. inquired.

"All week?"

"Yeah."

"Um, nothing I don’t think."

"Good. Don’t plan anything, you’ll be here with us."

Rebecca laughed. "Ok, I’ll call you guys tomorrow then," she asked.

"Sure."

"Ok, bye."

"Bye," J.C. hung up the phone and turned around to four expectant faces.

"Is she coming?" Chris asked.

"Of course she is, he isn’t crying is he?" Justin joked.

"Hey!" J.C. exclaimed, jumping at Justin.

One week later-

"Becky!" Chris exclaimed.

"Chrissy!" she replied in the same tone.

"Hey, don’t call me that," Chris argued.

"Why not?"

"Cause its a girl’s name."

"Well, it suits you fine then," Rebecca said, leaning in for her hug.

"Chris returned the hug. " That’s not very nice."

"Hey Becky."

Rebecca turned around to face Lance and Joey.

"Hi guys," she said as she hugged the guys. She was there to be with them for the week while they toured the United States. "Where’s J.C.?"

"Um, I don’t know, I think he heard you were coming and ran for the hills," Chris said sarcastically. They loved to tease each other.

"That’s good," Rebecca said with a smile. She looked around at her surroundings. Infront of her stood a very elegant, tall hotel building where the guys were staying.

"Woah, you guys have it pretty good for yourselves here."

"Well we try," Joey said, grinning.

"No but seriously, I'm so proud of you guys. I mean, look at this!" she said, "I can’t believe just like, a year and a half ago, you guys were in a warehouse practicing. Now look at where you are; stardom."

"Well it wasn’t easy getting here," came a voice from behind her. She turned around.

"J.C.!"

"Hey, c’mere," J.C. greeted as he pulled her into a friendly hug. A little too friendly, but Rebecca didn’t mind at all.

‘If he was holding her any tighter, I think I’d be attached to him,’ she thought to herself. ‘Shut up Rebecca, this is what you’ve dreamed of for the past year. Don’t blow it now.’

"Oh, I’ve missed you," J.C. said, releasing her.

"I’ve missed you too J.C."

The guys gave each other a knowing look. They saw the sparks between their two friends.

"So what’s on the agenda for today?" Rebecca asked, knowing they were on a very tight schedule.

"Um, for a little while, nothing. But after lunch, we have an interview and then we’re going into the studio to record a new song for the album," Lance, who was nicknamed ‘Scoop’ for always knowing what the guys were doing months in advance, informed her.

"Cool, but I thought you guys did all your recording back home in Orlando?"

"Well we have access to a really nice studio here so we’ve decided to take advantage of it."

"Makes sense," she considered.

"Lunch time!" Justin hollered from inside.

~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~
"Alright guys, hurry, we’ll be late if you don’t hurry up." Mike, their road manager, was rushing them. They only had five hours in the studio so after their interview, they had to hurry over to start recording.
After piling into the van, all six of them were driven’ across town to the studio.
"Whoa you guys, this place is huge," Rebecca exclaimed as they stopped inside the building.
"See? We told you it was a good one."
"Alright guys," Mike interrupted, looking at the song lyrics, "J.C., you have main vocals so I want you to record first."
"Ok, J.C. said as he bounced into the sound booth.
"Lance?" Rebecca asked.
"Yeah?"
"Um, a little while ago, I wrote some stuff down on a piece of paper. I was wondering if you could take a look at it."
"Sure, but I'm not really the one you should be showing these to. Maybe J.C. would be a better person to do this with."
"No, I really want you to," Becky said softly, handing the paper to Lance.
Lance skimmed the writing. Right away, he knew why Rebecca didn’t want to show this to J.C. she had written a love song.
"Wow, this- this is really good Rebecca. Did you write it from experience?"
"Uh huh," she murmured.
"I can tell. Do you mind if I show this to the others?"
"Um, sure," she said. "Oh wait, jut not-." She stopped.
"Just not who?" Lance asked, pausing.
"Oh uh, never mind. Yeah, you can show them."
"Are you sure?" he verified, knowing very well who she didn’t want to see these lyrics.
"Yeah, go ahead."
~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~

A tightness in my chest,

In addition, this yearning in my heart.

What you’re doing to me,

Is tearing me apart.

I wish that I,

Could show you, tell you.

What you mean to me.

But no matter what,

I say or do,

The truth,

You’ll never see.

So what choices,

Can I make?

You just don’t understand.

I was meant

To be your woman

But you’ll never

Be my man.

As his eyes read the paper, his mind never registered what it was exactly that the words meant. J.C. just saw lyrics to a song that his best friend had written, not a ballad that was written souly of her feelings for him.

"Wow, this song is incredible lance," Justin said, making his own comments, "Rebecca actually wrote this?" he asked with a sense of shock creeping into his voice.

"Yeah, it’s pretty amazing isn’t it? And, it’s written from true feelings," he added.

"It is?" J.C. asked with a disappointed look on his face.

"J.C. man, you amaze me. You know damn well that song is for you," Chris spat out.

"What in God’s name are you talking about Chris?" J.C. demanded, "I think you’re confused. You see, it’s me that likes her, not the other way around."

"No, it is the other way around J.C., she likes you too."

J.C. crossed his arms over his chest. "I don’t believe you," he said.

"Believe what you want J.C., but its true." And with that, Chris stood up and left the room. The others reluctantly followed, leaving a bewildered J.C. behind.

‘God damn it J.C., believe him, he’s your friend, why would he lie to you? Because, you don’t know if it’s true. What if he’s just assuming everything? You don’t want to get your hopes up and then just get your heart broken later.’

J.C. feverishly ran a hand through his hair. ‘Augh, why did Chris have to do this to me?’

~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~
"Hey guys, I bet we could put some music to this song. See what Becky thinks. Maybe she’d let us sing it, although we’d need to do a few word changes. It’s really an amazing song," Joey suggested the next day.
"I have a better idea guys," J.C. interrupted as he proceeded to tell the others his plan.
"That’s a good idea J.C.," Lance praised, "when are you planning to do this?"
"I'm not sure, maybe at the big concert on Friday?"
"Ok, we better get working then."
~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~*~~~

The end of the week nears as the guys get ready for the concert on Friday. The concert is sold out, rehearsals are in full swing and yet the guys still have time to put J.C.’s plan into action…

"I’ll see you after the show right?" Rebecca asked.

"Yeah. Just wait until the auditorium empties out a bit then come into the side door to the backstage entrance."

"Ok, see you then," said Becky as she left to go find her seat.

"Are you going to do it J.C.?" Chris inquired after Rebecca had left the room.

"Yeah, I didn’t come this far to back down now."

The guys knew what J.C. and Chris were talking about but the rest of the world had no clue. They would just have to wait and see what happened during the last song of the night.

"Well good luck J.C., come on guys, we’re on."

As the concert began and ‘NSYNC took center stage to open with their current hit ‘Tearin’ Up My Heart,’ the crowd erupted into cheers.

Becky laughed from delight at all the attention the guys were finally getting. They deserved it. She had been with them since the beginning, watching them scramble and scratch their way into a record deal and continue rising from there. She had always known they would make it big.

The show went on, and even though Becky had seen ‘NSYNC’s concerts millions of times, she still loved to watch her best friends do what they loved to do. She’d never get tired of it.

"Ok, our last song for tonight is a special one," J.C. said.

Rebecca watched on with wonder. This wasn’t something that was in rehearsal.

"I would personally like to dedicate this last song to a very special person in the audience." J.C. looked at Rebecca. "You know who you are."

The shock set in as the first chords of Rebecca's song pumped out. She couldn’t believe it. Rebecca didn’t even know they had music to the song and now they were singing it to her?

Nothing made sense until the music interlude hit. J.C. caught Rebecca's eye, and after carefully placing the microphone in his lap, J.C. mouthed the unmistakable words ‘I love you,’ in Rebecca's direction.

She was numb. As the song continued, Becky could feel tears of joy trickle down her face.

‘Oh my God Rebecca, don’t cry now, he’s looking at you.’ She couldn’t believe he was doing this to her. J.C., whom she had known most of her life, had just confessed his love for her infront of thousands of people. It wasn’t that she was uncomfortable with it, she knew her feelings for him were more or less the same for him. But like J.C. until now, she had been too afraid to admit her feelings to him. Now, she either had to tell him everything or pretend nothing ever happened and go on with life.

The concert ended and the fans began to leave the auditorium in a noisy stampede. Rebecca remained in her seat, waiting for her chance to go backstage.

Fifteen minutes later, Becky decided it would be safe to go. She got up, gathered her jacket and bag, looped them over her arm and headed towards the side door that lead to the backstage entrance.

"Pass please," the guard demanded at the door. Becky searched her bag and eventually found her pass. After producing it to the guard, he let her go through.

Once backstage, Becky caught the eye of Mike. She went over to see what she could uncover about the unexpected surprise.

"Mike, what was with tonight?" she asked.

"What do you mean?"

"Why were the guys singing my song?"

"It was J.C.’s idea. He thought it would be a nice way to say-." Mike stopped.

"Say what Mike?"

"Say that he loved you."

After a few moments of silence, Mike patted her on the back and told her where to go. "Go down that hall and take your first left," he said, pointing out the way to her.

Taking a deep breath and all her courage, she started towards the dressing room. Once she reached it, Becky paused outside to listen to what was going on inside.

"Lance, why are you making us listen to this?" Chris complained. They were listening to a tape of Leann Rimes.

"Because it’s good music," Lance defended. "Just wait ‘til Becky gets here, she’ll agree with me."

Becky smiled to herself. Lance liked the fact that she shared his taste for country music, although sometimes he did go a little over board with it.

"Hey where is Becky anyways? I thought she said she’d be here after the concert," Justin pondered.

Becky took one more deep breath. "I'm right here," she said, stepping into the room.

Everyone turned to look at Rebecca.

"Becky…" J.C. trailed off.

Rebecca walked over to J.C., wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed him, no hesitating. He responded quickly and wrapped his arms around her waist, the kiss growing more passionate by the second.

The guys weren’t sure whether or not to leave the room. They were just about to when Rebecca and J.C. parted with a final hug. "I love you," Rebecca whispered into his ear before she let go. But even as she did, her eyes never left his.

Uh, do you guys want to be alone?" Lance asked them.

There was no response. J.C. and Rebecca were in a different world.

"C’mon guys, I can tell when we’re not wanted," Chris gestured towards the others and headed towards the door. After the room was empty, J.C. and Rebecca sat down on the couch.

"J.C., what you did tonight was the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me."

"Really? So you weren’t embarrassed?" he questioned, taking her hands in his.

Rebecca thought for a second. "No, because no one in there knew who you were talking to, but it was hard to keep looking you in the eye," she said with a giggle.

J.C. smiled. "Well I wanted it to be more special than just saying ‘I love you’."

"It was. I loved it. And, I love you."

"You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting to hear you say that."

"No I don’t. How long?" she asked him.

"Well… I-. Um, about two years." J.C. stuttered.

Rebecca smiled. "Don’t be so embarrassed," she said as he caressed his face gently, "I’ve been waiting too."

A very special thanks to the best friend in the whole world for supplying the lyrics to Rebecca's song. Without them, the story wouldn’t have been complete. Thanks Kris, you’re the best.
