Today's schedule consists of five games:  the inaugural Senior Girls All-Star Game, Underclassmen Game No. 1, Underclassmen Game No. 2, Senior Game No. 1, and Senior Game No. 2.  The stats personally recorded by me differed slightly in some cases from the official book, but for the sake of clarity and continuity I have followed the official book in most cases.  The players wore their team uniforms and in several cases there were duplicate numbers which made it difficult to keep up with the players.

Senior Girls All-Star Game

East Team Coach Jim Wright   West Team Coach Zena Heckstall
Chandra Brown Manual 6-3   Tawana Freeman Butler 6-2
Brittany Morrison  Shelby Co. 5-11 Aya Traore Moore 6-2

Beth Kaufman Southern 6-0   Erin Brown Allen Co. 5-8
Carrie Clift Bishop Brossart 5-9

The West squad pulled out a 66-64 victory over the East squad in overtime.  The West team led 32-25 at halftime but the East squad mounted a comeback and the score was tied 60-all at the end of regulation.  Tawana Freeman hit a basket with less than 30 seconds left in overtime to give the West team the victory.   The West was led by Tawana Freeman with 19 points.  Nare Diawara added 11 points and 9 rebounds.  Stephanie Isaacs and Aya Traore added 12 and 10 points respectively.  The East squad was led by Joleen Phillips with 19 points.  Brittany Morrison and Suzanne Ashby added 16 and 14 points respectively with each tallying four three-pointers.

The East led 33-28 at halftime but the West squad rallied to win a 62-51 decision.  The West was led by Andrew Coats and Isaiah Mills with 11 and 9 points respectively.  David Cornwell added 7 points and should have a break-out season at Ballard next year.  The East squad was led by Rajon Rondo with 11 points.  Rajon has game and with his ability and understanding of the game could be very special before he graduates.  Maurice Blakey added 10 points and looks like another important cog in Dale Mabrey's PRP machine. Robbie Simpson added 8 points and with his size and desire to defend and rebound could be very good.

There was a ton of talent on the floor for this game and the fans were treated to an excellent game as the West won by a score of 99-95.  The West led 53-44 at halftime and survived a late rally to secure the victory.  The West squad was led by Jerome Gumbs and Lamar Owen with 19 and 16 points respectively.  Nate Austin had a good game with 14 points and 8 rebounds.  Terren Harbut added 8 points, 9 rebounds, and a highlight dunk.  Brandon Bender led the East squad with  18 points and 10 rebounds. Coric Riggs added 13 points.

West  (99) - Wardlow 7, Gumbs 19, Dewalt 0, Austin 14,  Owen 16, Bowling 2, Broomfield 1, Harbut 8, Lyvers 7, Madison 9, Miller 6, Newton 5, Rogers 5.
East (95) - McCoy 4, Kelly 5, Riggs 13, Ralston 4, A. Johnson 8, Ba 6, Bender 18, Chiles 11, E. Johnson 2, Koger 10, Woodard 12, Woody 3.

Conclusion

Dave Zuberer and Vic Malone do a great job putting this event together.  Like all All-Star events, some of the stars come to play and others play in spots, but the talent level was obvious and many of these young men and women will play at the next level.  This was a great chance to see the graduating seniors display their skills one more time and a glimpse into the future to see tomorrow's heroes in the underclassmen games.  The class of 2001 will be missed but the future is in good hands based on what I witnessed today.

Barren Co.'s Jerome Gumbs gained a lot of respect with his performance tonight.  Brandon Bender played well tonight and is capable of dominating at times.  It was nice to see Steven Koger back in Louisville and fun to imagine how good PRP would have been this year if he had been eligible.

Several players played well in the underclassmen games.  Rajon Rondo appears to have a bright future and he gets to the hoop in a hurry.  Robbie Simpson is 6-7 and has long arms enabling him to rebound well and be a terror on defense.  6-9 Isaiah Mills (Corbin) was very impressive and thrived in the All-Star environment.  Don't feel sorry for Ballard -- not with young players like David Cornwell, David Bryant, Sean Booker, etc. returning in 2002.  PRP's Dale Mabrey loses a lot of talent each year, reloads, and fields another outstanding team.  North Hardin had most of their young guns in the house and Shelby Co. was represented by the dynamic duo of  Robert Daniels and Brian Silverhorn.  Paul Dunbar's Kenneth Fox appears to grow hourly and he quietly but efficiently turns in a good performance.  This young man should give coach Eddie Oakley plenty of reasons to smile next season.

The inaugural ladies game was a nice touch and one of the better played games today.   The girls displayed nice athleticism and some fine shooting from behind the three point line.  Hopefully this will continue an the ladies will continue to be a part of the Executive Inn All-Star Classic.

Acknowledgments

A special thanks to Dave Zuberer, Vic Malone, and the rest of the people associated with this event for the hospitality extended me during the games.  Try to imagine the logistics involved with putting on a one day event with ten teams and 120 players.  I would recommend this event for any basketball "junkie" and I hope to make it part of my yearly schedule.
