Conclusion

Congratulations to the Lexington Catholic Lady Knights and their coaching staff.  What a wild, wonderful ride it has been for this team.  They had to beat Bryan Station, Woodford County, and a very good Scott Cromwell-coached Henry Clay squad just to survive the 11th Region tournament.  The road didn't get any easier at the big show because they had to defeat Marshall County, Jackson County, Henderson County, and DuPont Manual to claim the title.  Jackson County had already defeated Catholic twice this year but Lexington Catholic coach Greg Todd altered his strategy and pulled off the upset.  Catholic had to mount a comeback against Manual in the championship game, once falling behind by 14 in the second quarter before coming back to cap a dream season.

Coach Mina Todd's DuPont Manual team had a great tourney run but fell two points short at the buzzer.  They caught a tough break when Chelsey Thompson went down with a severely sprained ankle and missed the last eleven minutes of the game.

While it was a big disappointment to the Jackson County team, coaching staff, and supporters that they didn't capture the title, it shouldn't detract from a fabulous season.  Coach Greg Parrett's squad finished 34-2 and captured wins in the following tourneys:  Fifth Third Bank Prime Time Classic, the Pickerington Lady Tiger Classic, and the All "A" Classic.

There were so many memorable teams and players in the tourney it is difficult to mention them all here.  The pride of Allen Co. - Scottsville, Stacy Felchner, ended her career in style averaging 25.5 PPG and 7.5 RPG.  My favorite name in the tournament was Princess Wimsatt from Henderson County.  She played like royalty on the hardwood, leading her team to the semifinals, averaging 15.0 PPG and 7 APG in three games.

I was covering an AAU tournament at Lexington Catholic in the summer of 1999 and getting help with the lineups from a young lady at the scorer's table.  Lexington Catholic had won the state championship but had graduated six senior mainstays from the team and Coach Bob Tripure had retired.  I vaguely remembered the young lady as a reserve on that team and idly remarked that it would surely be a rebuilding year with a new coach and a new cast of players.  She politely but firmly assured me that Lexington Catholic would have a good team.  Katie Mendenhall, you were right -- made it to the state last year and cut down the nets this year.

Thanks for the memories ladies.  It was another fine year in girls basketball and the sky appears to be the limit.
