Fifth Third Bank Kentucky Holiday Classic

Lexington Catholic coach/athletic director Danny Haney has put together another excellent field for this event.  He has brought 16 teams to town to compete for the championship of this event.  This tournament is in its sixth year and has gained prestige as one of the top holiday events.

This year's field will consist of the following teams:  Bell County, Bourbon County, Boyle County, Glasgow, Henry Clay, Highlands, Lexington Catholic, Mason County, Mercer County, Paducah St. Mary, Pleasure Ridge Park, Russell, Seneca, Shelby County, Simon Kenton, and defending champion Westminster Academy (Florida).

Some of the outstanding alumni who have played here include:  Elton Brand (Duke - NBA), Kenny Gregory (Kansas), Karim Shabazz (Providence), J. R. VanHoose (Marshall), David Graves (Notre Dame), Jaron Brown (Pittsburgh), Erik Brown (Louisville), Casey Sanders (Duke), Vincent Yarborough (Tennessee), Kenny Walker (Alabama), Nick Anderson (Texas A&M), Brandon Bender (Louisville), DeShaun Williams (Syracuse), Ronny Dawn (Marshall), Rashaad Carruth (Kentucky), Antonio Lawrence (Class of 2002), Scott Hundley (Vanderbilt), David Harrison (Colorado), Julius Hodge (North Carolina State), Marquis Estill (Kentucky), Patrick Sparks (Western Kentucky), Larry O'Bannon (Louisville), Carlos Hurt (Louisville), and too many others to mention.

There are several fine teams and many outstanding players scheduled to participate in this event.  Nine of the top twenty-five players in the Lexington Herald-Leader pre-season report will play in this event.  They are #1 Brandon Stockton (Glasgow), #10 Ross Neltner (Highlands), #11 Preston LeMaster (Bourbon County), #12 Brian Silverhorn (Shelby County), #15 Ryan Cochran (Paducah St. Mary), #18 Brad Lightle (Pleasure Ridge Park), #19 Robert Daniels (Shelby County), #20 Demetrius Green (Lexington Catholic), and #21 Larry Williams (Seneca).  Brandon Stockton, the leading candidate for Mr. Basketball 2002, opened a lot of eyes with his stellar play in last year's event.

Who will win this tournament?  There appears to be six or seven teams capable of winning this tourney but I would expect Lexington Catholic to come out of the top bracket and Westminster Academy, led by super-soph Taurean Green to be a slight choice to survive the bottom bracket.

MVP

Congratulations to Lexington Catholic coach Danny Haney and the tournament sponsors for putting together another good week of competition.  Also, congratulations to coach Haney and the Lexington Catholic Knights for an excellent tournament run.  It was a nice coming out party for MVP William GrahamGraham improved tremendously over the summer and had an excellent tourney averaging 18.8 ppg over four games.

The consolation bracket game between Bourbon County and Glasgow was fun to watch.  Glasgow's Brandon Stockton won the battle with 51 points but Bourbon County's Preston LeMaster won the war with 32 points and the game winning free throws to give his team a 70-69 victory.  Many fans like offensive fireworks so they must have been thrilled with Westminster's 101-100 overtime victory over Shelby County in a quarterfinal game.  Mason County defeated Bourbon County 74-70 in another quarterfinal game and these two 10th region powers will probably meet again later this season for even higher stakes.  Lexington Catholic had to gut out a tough win over Highlands to reach the championship game.

Two of the top junior big men in the state - Mike Brock and Ross Neltner - had excellent tourneys and Westminster's Taurean Green came in with excellent credentials and this soph can definitely play.  Catholic's Demetrius Green and Mason County's Chris Lofton lived up to their sizeable reputations, and Clay List of Henry Clay put up some nice numbers.

I would like to express appreciation to Lexington Catholic, especially Jon Albaugh and Greg Stephens, for the hospitality extended to me during this tourney.  Also a big thanks to Butch Cope, Glen Gentry, and Gary Long for providing statistics for the games.  The logistics of putting on a tournament like this is staggering and everyone does a fantastic job of making this a class event.

Please feel free to send your comments and questions concerning the tournament, teams, or players to me at  prephoops@yahoo.com .
