The Touchstone Energy All “A” Classic is a statewide basketball tournament for schools with an enrollment of 425 students or less in grades 9-12. 123 girls’ teams will participate in this year’s tournament.
The All “A” Classic included four girls teams in 1991. The 1992 version expanded to include eight girls teams and in 1993 the tournament again expanded to include a full complement of 16 teams. Winners crowned to date are 1991 Cumberland, 1992 Cumberland, 1993 Nicholas County, 1994 Louisville Holy Cross, 1995 Monroe County, 1996 Louisville Holy Cross, 1997 Hazard, 1998 Hazard, 1999 Bishop Brossart, 2000 Somerset, 2001 Jackson County, 2002 Jackson County, 2003 Clinton County, 2004 Clinton County and 2005 Christian Academy of Louisville.
Teams competing for this year’s championship are St. Mary, Lyon County, Owensboro Catholic, Monroe County, Bardstown, Louisville Holy Cross, Moore, Trimble County, Covington Holy Cross, Paris, Lexington Christian Academy, Danville, Middlesboro, Hazard, Paintsville, and Rose Hill Christian.
Wednesday, February 1st - Day 1
Game No. 1 Lexington Christian Academy (14-5) (Region 11) vs. Covington Holy Cross (13-10) (Region 9)
Lexington Christian Academy coach Donna Murphy started the following lineup: 5-9 Sr. Noell Jones, 5-8 Fr. Courtney Clifton, 6-1 Fr. Clara Mitchell, 5-8 Fr. Anna Martin, and 5-7 Jr. Emily London. Covington Holy Cross coach Rob Kues countered with 5-8 Sr. Holly Dorning, 5-7 Sr. Brittany Burk, 5-11 So. Katie Behrens, 5-5 So. Kristin Bibbins, and 5-11 Sr. Rachel Lantry. (Note: Covington Holy Cross is without the services of two key players 5-2 So. Brooke Lantry and 5-10 Fr. Anna Noll due to injuries).
Lexington Christian Academy raced out to an 11-0 lead and took advantage of Covington Holy Cross’ cold shooting (27.7%) from the field to earn a 61-45 victory. Lexington Christian Academy also got excellent bench play today as they held an 18-3 advantage in bench scoring.
Lexington Christian Academy shot 46.2% from the field including five of 11 from beyond the arc. The Lady Eagles connected on 20 of 27 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 17 Covington Holy Cross turnovers. Covington Holy Cross shot 27.7% from the field, connected on 17 of 26 from the free throw line, and grabbed 27 rebounds. The Lady Indians scored 16 points off 20 Lexington Christian Academy turnovers.
Emily London led Lexington Christian Academy with 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Anna Martin added 14 points, all in the second half, and pulled down six rebounds. 5-10 Jr. Marckia Wilson chipped in with 10 points. Rachel Lantry led Covington Holy Cross with 19 points. Katie Behrens added 10 points while Holly Dorning chipped in with six points and eight rebounds.

St. Mary held a 41-25 margin in rebounding and a 15-1 advantage in free throw points in a 57-42 victory over Hazard. The Lady Bulldogs had no answer for St. Mary’s Angela Roof in the paint as she recorded 35 points and 12 rebounds.
St. Mary shot 39.2% from the field, connected on 15 of 20 free throws, and scored 19 points off 14 Hazard turnovers. Hazard shot 36% from the field, was one of two from the charity stripe, and scored 11 points off 11 St. Mary turnovers.
Roof’s 35 points came on 12 of 20 from the field and 11 of 16 free throws. Danielle Averill added 13 points and seven rebounds. Amber Everson chipped in with seven points and seven assists. Brittani Slone and Ashley Hall led Hazard with 15 and 10 points respectively.

Rose Hill Christian scored 30 points off 26 Louisville Holy Cross turnovers in a 91-42 a victory. Rose Hill dominated the action especially in the second half as they outscored the Lady Cougars 52-19 in the final two quarters.
Rose Hill Christian shot 55.9% from the field, connected on 21 of 26 free throws, and pulled down 46 rebounds. Louisville Holy Cross shot 32.6% from the field, connected on 10 of 20 free throws, and grabbed 22 rebounds.
Rose Hill had three players score twenty-plus points, led by Kala Faulkner with 26 points. Emily Queen added 23 points and 12 rebounds while Laura Terry recorded 20 points and seven rebounds. Sarah Yates reached double figures with 14 points. Britt Faulkner only scored three points but she pulled down 12 rebounds, dished out eight assists, and recorded five steals. Elizabeth Schuler and Jackie Skaggs paced Louisville Holy Cross with 13 and 10 points respectively.

Middlesboro took advantage of foul woes to Paris’ Taylor Christman to capture an exciting 50-46 victory. Christman was limited to 12:30 minutes and fouled out with 5:41 remaining in the game. Middlesboro shot 36.1% from the field, connected on 20 of 35 free throws, and pulled down 39 rebounds. Middlesboro scored 18 points off 24 Paris turnovers. Paris shot 29.6% from the field, connected on 10 of 22 free throws, and grabbed 39 rebounds. Paris scored 24 points off 28 Middlesboro turnovers and held a 22-10 advantage in bench scoring.
Sophie Robinson led Middlesboro was led with 19 points and six steals. Emily Osborne added eight points. Taylor Christman led Paris with 15 points despite her limited minutes. 5-5 So. Sasha Davis added nine points and 5-8 Fr. Emily Hinkson chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds, and five steals.

Paintsville captured a narrow 46-43 decision over Lyon County. The victorious Lady Tigers shot 40.4% from the field, connected on eight of 18 free throws, and pulled down 36 rebounds. Paintsville scored 15 points off 13 Lyon County turnovers. Lyon County shot 37.5% from the field, connected on six of eight free throws, and grabbed 28 rebounds. Paintsville committed 14 turnovers but Lyon County could only convert for eight points. Lyon County held a 10-0 advantage in bench scoring.
Chelsee Jarrell led Paintsville with 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kendra Carroll added 15 points and five rebounds. Allison Mussato led Lyon County with 10 points. Abby McLeod and 5-9 So. Erin Mussato added eight points each and pulled down seven and six rebounds respectively.

Moore scored 30 points off 28 Bardstown turnovers on their way to a 59-51 victory. Moore shot 35.6% from the field, connected on 13 of 19 free throws, and pulled down 31 rebounds. Bardstown shot 34.8% from the field, connected on 15 of 23 free throws, and grabbed 42 rebounds.
Chiquita Evans led Moore with 20 points and seven rebounds. Whitney Duncan added 15 points. Brianne Miles and 4-11 So. Quintisha Myles chipped in with nine points each. Kenya Kimberland led Bardstown with 14 points and eight rebounds. 5-8 Jr. Shatoya Hazelwood added 10 points. Candyce Lewis only scored four points but pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.

The victors shot 43.9% from the field, connected on 10 of 16 free throws, and pulled down 24 rebounds. Owensboro Catholic shot 55.6% from the field, connected on 17 of 26 free throws, and grabbed 29 rebounds. Monroe County attempted 30 more shots from the field (57-27) than Owensboro Catholic.
Kenzie Rich led Monroe County with 24 points, six rebounds, seven assists, and five steals. Chelsea McCreary and Tara Harlan added 11 and 10 points respectively. Valerie Kamuf led Owensboro Catholic with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Kamuf was nine of 12 from the field and seven of 10 from the free throw line.

Trimble County was 19 of 31 from the field while Danville could only manage 15 of 54 from the field. Trimble County connected on 14 of 19 free throws, and pulled down 29 rebounds. Trimble County scored 13 points off 10 Danville turnovers. Danville connected on 11 of 17 free throws and grabbed 27 rebounds. Danville scored 15 points off 18 Trimble County turnovers. Danville held a 14-0 advantage in second chance points.
Laci Schirmer led Trimble County with 15 points. Emily Merrill added 13 points. Carollana Jennings chipped in with eight points and five rebounds before leaving the game with an injury. 6-2 So. Ashleigh Miller came off the bench to record six points and eight rebounds. Tasha Milby led Danville with 18 points and seven rebounds. Xerces Simpson added 16 points. Milby and Simpson scored 34 of 43 Danville points and attempted 43 of the 54 field goal attempts for the Lady Admirals.

Lexington Christian Academy led 27-25 with 2:43 left in the first half but St. Mary closed the half with a 12-0 run to take a 37-27 lead at the half. LCA fought back and closed the deficit to two, 60-58, with 44 seconds left in the game. St. Mary closed out the scoring with a 6-0 run to take a 66-58 victory.
St. Mary shot 48.8% from the field, connected on 22 of 32 free throws, and pulled down 36 rebounds. Lexington Christian Academy shot 30% from the field, connected on 19 of 26 free throws and grabbed 34 rebounds. LCA scored 20 points off 11 St. Mary turnovers.
Angela Roof led a balanced St. Mary attack with 18 points and six rebounds. Danielle Averill added 17 points and nine rebounds while Abby Townzen chipped in with 15 points and eight rebounds. Amber Everson also reached double figures with 10 points and dished out six assists. Emily London led Lexington Christian Academy with 17 points and seven rebounds. Anna Martin also scored 17 points and recorded six steals.

The Lady Royals connected on 22 of 36 free throws and pulled down 36 rebounds. Middlesboro shot 33.3% from the field including four of 13 from the three point line. Middlesboro connected on 19 of 27 free throws and grabbed 54 rebounds.
Kala Faulkner led Rose Hill Christian with 28 points, five assists, and five steals. Faulkner was four of six from beyond the arc. Laura Terry added 22 points and Emily Queen recorded 15 points, 17 rebounds, and five steals. Brooklyn Jimison led Middlesboro with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Shaleesha Coleman and Sophie Robinson added 13 and 12 points respectively.

The score was tied 42-42 at the end of three quarters but Paintsville outscored Moore 21-14 in the final quarter to earn a 63-56 victory. Paintsville shot 54.3% from the field, connected on 22 of 33 free throws, and pulled down 36 rebounds. Moore shot 32.8% from the field including six of 28 from beyond the arc. They connected on eight of 14 free throws and grabbed 36 rebounds. Moore scored 22 points off 19 Paintsville turnovers and held a 20-0 advantage in bench scoring.
Kendra Carroll led Paintsville with 23 points including three of three from three point range, and pulled down six rebounds. Chelsee Jarrell added 19 points and six rebounds. Chiquita Evans and Brandy Middleton led Moore with 14 and 12 points respectively.

Chelsea McCreary led Monroe County with 22 points. Kenzie Rich added 21 points, five rebounds, and eight assists. Marie Bennett chipped in with 13 points. Libby Thoke and Emily Merrill led Trimble County with 14 and 10 points respectively.

St. Mary coach Staci Averill countered with 5-9 Sr. Danielle Averill, 5-9 Jr. Abby Townzen, 6-3 Sr. Angela Roof, 5-6 Sr. Adrianne Rasche, and 5-4 Sr. Amber Everson.
A combination of too much Angela Roof and foul problems for inside players proved to be too much for Rose Hill to overcome as they dropped a 60-55 decision to St. Mary. The score was tied 25-25 at halftime but St. Mary’s Angela Roof scored 22 of her game-high 30 points after intermission. Both of Rose Hill’s 6-1 Jrs. Emily Queen and Laura Terry were limited in playing time in the second half due to foul woes and both fouled out in the final quarter.
St. Mary shot 39.6% from the field, connected on 10 of 14 free throws, and pulled down 41 rebounds. The Lady Vikings scored 11 points off 13 Rose Hill turnovers. Rose Hill shot 36.5% from the field, connected on 11 of 13 free throws, and grabbed 26 rebounds. Rose Hill scored 16 points off 17 St. Mary turnovers.
Angela Roof led St. Mary with 30 points and 12 rebounds. Abby Townzen added 14 points and six rebounds while Danielle Averill chipped in with seven points and eight rebounds. Emily Queen led Rose Hill Christian with 20 points, including two of three three point baskets. Queen also pulled down 11 rebounds and recorded five steals. Laura Terry added 13 points and blocked seven shots.

Monroe County took a 14-6 lead after the first quarter on their way to a 54-44 victory over Paintsville. Monroe County shot 41.9% from the field, connected on 15 of 19 free throws, and pulled down 24 rebounds. The Lady Falcons scored 15 points off 21 Paintsville turnovers. Paintsville shot 44.4% from the field, connected on 10 of 15 free throws, and grabbed 27 rebounds. The Lady Tigers scored 14 points off 15 Monroe County turnovers.
Kenzie Rich led Monroe County with 17 points and six steals. Marie Bennett added 14 points and six rebounds. Chelsea McCreary chipped in with 11 points. Kendra Carroll led Paintsville with 17 points and six rebounds. Chelsee Jarrell added nine points and 10 rebounds.

Monroe County trailed 54-47 with 4:25 remaining in the game but rallied to defeat St. Mary 64-60. St. Mary suffered through poor free throw shooting down the stretch as they only connected on two of nine free throws in the final quarter. Monroe County’s Kenzie Rich and Chelsea McCreary led the comeback in the final quarter as they recorded eight and seven points respectively.
Monroe County shot 41.4% from the field including five of 20 from beyond the arc. They connected on 11 of 15 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 14 points off 16 St. Mary turnovers. St. Mary shot 46.8% from the field, connected on 13 of 24 free throws, and grabbed 33 rebounds. The Lady Vikings scored 17 points off 12 Monroe County turnovers.
Kenzie Rich led Monroe County with 22 points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and four steals. Chelsea McCreary and Laura Anderson added 15 and 10 points respectively. Angela Roof led St. Mary with 30 points and 19 rebounds. Danielle Averill added 13 points, six rebounds, and five assists.

Conclusion
This was an excellent tournament and an outstanding week of basketball.
Monroe County concluded an excellent tourney run with a championship.
This is a squad that emphasizes team play and defense and wins despite having a
relatively small team (starters stand 5-8, 5-7, 5-7, 5-6, and 5-9). Coach
Dwayne Murray did an excellent job preparing his team for this tourney.
Also congratulations to Coach Staci Averill and the St. Mary Lady Vikings for
their excellent tourney run.
Congratulations to members of the All Tournament team and although there are too many to mention them all here I would like to mention a few players who could have made the team. I thought Marie Bennett (Monroe County) should have made the team. Bennett is the ultimate “blue collar” worker whose contributions are easily measured—team wins. Kala Faulkner (Rose Hill Christian) averaged 20.7 ppg, 4.3 apg, and 4.0 spg in three games. Laura Terry (Rose Hill Christian) averaged 18.3 ppg and 3.3 bpg in three games. Although Valerie Kamuf (Owensboro Catholic) only played one game, she recorded 25 points and 10 rebounds. Emily London (Lexington Christian Academy) averaged 18 ppg and 7 rpg in two games.
There were also several new stars on the horizon. 5-8 Fr. guard Anna Martin (Lexington Christian Academy) had an excellent tourney with 15.5 ppg and 4.0 spg in two games. 5-11 So. Elizabeth Schuler shows a lot of potential at Louisville Holy Cross. While Jr. Emily Queen (Rose Hill Christian) can not be considered a newcomer, I am always impressed with her skills and versatility.
It is also time to say goodbye to the seniors who have played in their last All “A” Classic, including Taylor Christman (Paris) and Rachel Lantry (Covington Holy Cross), who appeared to make an annual appearance in this event.
This event was special and very touching for me. I graduated from a school many years ago with a senior class of 37 students. This tournament truly epitomizes the ideals and standards that the founders wisely saw in their crystal ball several years ago. The talent was excellent, the fan support outstanding, and several of these teams should challenge for regional championships and berths in the girls state tourney later this season. Congratulations to all for a job well done.
