2008 Republic Bank Holiday Classic

Lexington Catholic girls' coach Tony Talbott has put together a great five days of basketball.   Sixteen of the top twenty-five teams in the Lexington Herald-Leader pre-season preview are entered in this tournament.   They are #2 Lexington Christian Academy, #3 Elizabethtown, #4 duPont Manual, #6 Butler, #8 Montgomery County, #10 Lexington Catholic, #11 Ohio County, #13 Southwestern #14 Mercy Academy, #15 Clay County, #16 Christian Academy of Louisville, #18 Sacred Heart Academy, #20 Madisonville-North Hopkins, #21 Simon Kenton, #24 Highlands, and #25 Warren East.  

Many of the top players in the state are scheduled to play in this star-studded event.   Fourteen of the top twenty-five players in the Lexington Herald-Leader pre-season preview are featured in this tournament.   The players are #2 Ashley Rainey (Warren East), #4 Anna Martin (Lexington Christian Academy), #5 Avery Jones (duPont Manual), #6 Alex Jones (Elizabethtown), #8 Antonita Slaughter (Christian Academy of Louisville), #9 Tiara Hopper (Butler), #10 Courtney Clifton (Lexington Christian Academy), #12 Mariah Robinson (Ohio County), #16 Sarah Beth Barnette (Lexington Christian Academy), #17 Mackenzie Lee (Montgomery County), #18 Kendall Noble (Breathitt County), #19 Rachel Greenwell (Owensboro Catholic), #21 Chelsea Tolliver (Simon Kenton), and #24 Natalie Greenwell (Elizabethtown). 

The Lexington Herald-Leader preview also listed the best players in each region, and the number one ranked player in seven of the sixteen regions is scheduled to play in this tourney.   The regionally ranked number one players in this event are (Region 3) Mariah Robinson , (Region 4) Ashley Rainey , (Region 7) Antonita Slaughter , (Region 8) Chelsea Tolliver , (Region 10) Mackenzie Lee , (Region 11) Anna Martin , and (Region 14) Kendall Noble .  

This tournament also features two excellent out of state teams in Dayton Dunbar (OH) and Huntington High (WV).   Dunbar should be led by 5-11 Jr. Kenyonna Simmons (18.6 ppg).   Huntington will be led by 6-2 Jr. Whitney Bays (21 ppg, 12 rpg) and 6-0 Jr. Erin Bailes (14 ppg, 8 rpg, 6 apg).  

There will be 51 games played in two gyms over a five day period, culminating in an overall championship game to be played on December 23rd.   I will attempt to provide a capsule report for each game with expanded coverage given to each game I personally view.   Spelling of players names varies from program to program and sometimes the heights of the players are not provided so I apologize in advance for any inaccuracies. 

Friday December 19

Lincoln County (5-1) vs. Lexington Christian Academy (4-1)

Lincoln County Coach Don Story started the following lineup:  5-10 Sr. Keira Henderson, 5-9 Jr. Nikki Bustle, 6-3 Jr. Kendra Brown, 5-9 Jr. Jessica Upchurch, and 5-5 Jr. Alissa Patterson.  Lexington Christian Academy Coach Jason Seamands countered with 5-10 Sr. Anna Martin, 6-2 Jr. Sarah Beth Barnette, 5-10 Sr. Caitlin Dorton, 5-4 Fr. Kelli Mitchuson, and 5-11 Sr. Courtney Clifton. 

Lexington Christian Academy trailed 46-45 in the fourth quarter but went on a 15-0 run to take control of the game in a 63-49 victory over Lincoln County.   LCA shot 41.1% from the field including nine of 21 from the three point line.   The Lady Eagles connected on eight of nine free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 18 Lincoln County turnovers.   Lincoln County shot 32.1% from the field including four of 17 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Patriots connected on 11 of 14 free throws, pulled down 36 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 15 LCA turnovers.  

Courtney Clifton led the victors with 22 points including four three point baskets and seven rebounds.  Anna Martin added 19 points.  Sarah Beth Barnette chipped in with 13 points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Keira Henderson led Lincoln County with 15 points and nine rebounds.  Jessica Upchurch added 11 points and eight rebounds.  Nikki Bustle recorded 10 points and seven rebounds. 

Montgomery County (4-0) vs. Newport Central Catholic (2-2)

Montgomery County Coach Janie Robinson started the following lineup:  5-11 Sr. Elizabeth Prewitt, 5-11 Sr. Kayla Webb, 6-3 Jr. Mary Jehlik, 5-10 Jr. Annie Garland, and 5-7 Sr. Mackenzie Lee.  Newport Central Catholic Coach Ron Dawn countered with 5-7 Sr. Jane, 5-7 Sr. Kimber Schultz, 5-11 Jr. Mariah Tabor, 5-6 So. Montgomery County defeated Newport Central Catholic 57-35.   Montgomery County shot 46.9% from the field including five of nine from the three point line.   The Lady Indians connected on six of 10 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 17 NCC turnovers.   Newport Central Catholic shot 27.9% from the field including one of six from beyond the arc.   The Thoroughbreds connected on 10 of 14 free throws, grabbed 26 rebounds, and scored seven points off 15 Montgomery County turnovers.  

Annie Garland led the victors with 15 points and seven rebounds.  Elizabeth Prewitt added 12 points.  Mackenzie Lee pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds.  Mariah Tabor led Newport Central Catholic with 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Courtney Sandfoss added 10 points. 

Clay County (3-1) vs. Christian Academy of Louisville (6-0)

Clay County Coach James Burchell started the following lineup:  5-10 Jr. Jordan Phillips, 5-9 Jr. Danielle Fox, 6-1 So. Whitney Belle Jackson, 5-7 So. Kayla Smith, and 5-5 Fr. Alisha Mitchell.  CAL Coach Don Rice countered with 5-11 Jr. Anna Hart, 5-10 Jr. Allison Karst, 6-2 Jr. Antonita Slaughter, 5-6 So. Emily Walden, and 5-10 Sr. Clair Buchanan. 

CAL raced out to a 15-3 first quarter lead on their way to a 48-30 victory over Clay County.   CAL shot 41.9% from the field including six of 15 from the three point line.   The Lady Centurions connected on six of 12 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored nine points off 15 Clay County turnovers.   Clay County shot 36.1% from the field including zero of 12 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Tigers connected on four of eight free throws, pulled down 27 rebounds, and scored eight points off 11 CAL turnovers.  

Clair Buchanan led CAL with 18 points and six rebounds.  Antonita Slaughter and 5-11 Sr. Hannah Bowman added eight points and six rebounds each.  Whitney Belle Jackson led Clay County with 12 points and seven rebounds.  Danielle Fox added 10 points and six rebounds. 

Elliott County (3-1) vs. Conner (4-0)

Elliott County Coach Mark Cantrell started the following lineup:  5-8 Sr. Shae Ferguson, 5-7 Jr. Kelsey Ferguson, 5-10 Sr. Lakin Griffith, 5-7 Jr. Jhonda Ison, and 5-5 Sr. Whitney Fannin.  Conner Coach Kim Warfield countered with 5-7 Fr. Conner defeated Elliott County by a score of 56-46.   Conner shot 38.2% from the field including three of 11 from the three point line.   The Lady Cougars connected on 11 of 16 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 28 Elliott County turnovers.   Elliott County shot 40.4% from the field including three of 17 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Lions connected on five of 10 free throws, grabbed 35 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 15 Conner turnovers.  

Allison Long and Jr. Peyton Malone led Conner with 12 and 10 points respectively.   Lakin Griffith led Elliott County with 19 points and eight rebounds.  Kelsey Ferguson and Shae Ferguson added 11 and 10 points respectively.   Kelsey Ferguson and Shae Ferguson also pulled down eight rebounds each.  

Highlands (5-0) vs. Huntington (WV) (1-0)

Highlands Coach Jaime Walz Richey started the following lineup:  5-8 Jr. Samantha Messmer, 5-8 Jr. Katie Allen, 6-0 Jr. Bekah Towles, 5-9 Sr. Mallory Adler, and 5-6 So. Allie Conner.  Huntington Coach Lonnie Lucas countered with 6-1 So. Talequia Hamilton, 6-0 Jr. Erin Bailes, 6-2 Jr. Whitney Bays, 5-7 Jr. Leah Ching, and 5-8 Jr. Heather Eubank. 

Highlands defeated Huntington 50-47.  

Samantha Messmer and Bekah Towles led a balanced Highlands attack with 10 points each.  Erin Bailes led Huntington with 15 points.  Whitney Bays added 14 points, 18 rebounds, and four blocked shots. 

Ohio County (6-0) vs. Breathitt County (5-1)

Ohio County Coach Brad Johnson started the following lineup:  5-6 Sr. Mariah Robinson, 5-6 So. Sarah Wood, 6-2 Sr. Jo Jurgerns, 5-5 Jr. Kaley Griffin, and 5-4 So. Breathitt County defeated Ohio County 52-37.   Breathitt County shot 35.8% from the field including seven of 14 from the three point line.   The Lady Cats connected on seven of 14 free throws, pulled down 45 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 21 Ohio County turnovers.   Ohio County shot 29.4% from the field including five of 16 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Eagles connected on two of 10 free throws, grabbed 35 rebounds, and scored six points off 21 Breathitt County turnovers.  

Brianna Deaton led Breathitt County with 20 points including six three point baskets.  Kendall Noble added 13 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, four blocked shots, and six steals.  Arielle Keown, Mariah Robinson, and 6-0 Jr. Olivia Millsaps led Ohio County with 11, nine, and nine points respectively.

Lincoln County easily defeated Newport Central Catholic by a score of 50-25.   Lincoln County shot 54.8% from the field including two of five from the three point line.   The Lady Patriots connected on 14 of 17 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 16 NCC turnovers.   Newport Central Catholic shot 19.5% from the field including three of 12 from beyond the arc.   The Thoroughbreds connected on six of 16 free throws, grabbed 19 rebounds, and scored eight points off 19 Lincoln County turnovers.  

Jessica Upchurch led the victors with 26 points.  Upchurch was 10 of 11 from the field including two of two from beyond the arc and four of five from the free throw line.  Courtney Sandfoss, Kimber Schultz, and 5-8 Sr. Michelle Stoll led NCC with seven, six, and six points respectively.  

Clay County (3-2) vs. Elliott County (3-2)

Whitney Belle Jackson led Clay County with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Kayla Smith, Jordan Phillips, and Danielle Fox added 16, 12, and 10 points respectively.   Shae Ferguson led Elliott County with 24 points including seven three point baskets.  Lakin Griffith and Kelsey Ferguson added 13 points each.

Huntington utilized their inside game to defeat Ohio County 82-58.   Huntington shot 50.8% from the field including two of eight from the three point line.   The Lady Highlanders connected on 14 of 24 free throws, pulled down 48 rebounds, and scored 24 points off 23 Ohio County turnovers.   Ohio County shot 29.3% from the field including six of 22 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Eagles connected on 18 of 24 free throws, grabbed 36 rebounds, and scored 25 points off 24 Huntington turnovers.  

Whitney Bays led Huntington with 26 points and 11 rebounds.  Leah Ching, Heather Eubank, and Erin Bailes added 15, 13, and 12 points respectively.   Talequia Hamilton recorded five points, 16 rebounds, five blocked shots, and seven steals.  Kaley Griffin and Mariah Robinson led Ohio County with 10 and eight points respectively.

5-7 Jr. Whitney Reed led Butler with 22 points including four three point baskets.  Tiara Hopper added 16 points.  Danay Fothergill led Southwestern with 26 points including six three point baskets.  Devin Fothergill added 12 points and nine assists.  Ashley Fowler chipped in with 11 points.  Stephanie Salyers recorded eight points and 10 assists. 

Owensboro Catholic (5-0) vs. Simon Kenton (5-0)

Simon Kenton defeated Owensboro Catholic by a score of 52-40.   Simon Kenton shot 34.5% from the field including 12 of 34 from the three point line.   The Lady Pioneers did not shoot any free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 18 Owensboro Catholic turnovers.   Owensboro Catholic shot 37.5% from the field including three of eight from beyond the arc.   The Lady Aces connected on 13 of 19 free throws, grabbed 35 rebounds, and scored three points off seven Simon Kenton turnovers.  

Chelsea Tolliver led Simon Kenton with 24 points including six three point baskets.  Caitlyn Figgins added 10 points and nine rebounds.  Becca Greenwell led Owensboro Catholic with 17 points and 12 rebounds. 

duPont Manual (4-0) vs. Ashland (3-0)

Manual Coach Stacy Pendleton started the following lineup:  5-10 So. Mechael Guess, 5-6 Sr. Janie Klein, 6-1 Sr. Avery Jones, 5-4 Sr. Denisha Harbison, and 5-7 Fr. Manual proved to be too strong inside and defeated Ashland 68-41.   Manual shot 46.8% from the field including two of eight from the three point line.   The Lady Crimsons connected on eight of 17 free throws, pulled down 42 rebounds, and scored 32 points off 27 Ashland turnovers.   Ashland shot 36.4% from the field including five of 13 from beyond the arc.   The Kittens connected on 12 of 21 free throws, grabbed 25 rebounds, and scored three points off 15 Manual turnovers.  

Mechael Guess led the victors with 20 points and eight rebounds.  Avery Jones added 15 points.  Chelsea Dietrich led Ashland with 10 points.  Kim Strait added seven points. 

Warren East (3-1) vs. Wayne County (4-2)

Wayne County defeated Warren East by a score of 59-48.   Wayne County shot 52.2% from the field including six of 11 from the three point line.   The Lady Cardinals connected on five of nine free throws, pulled down 20 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 21 Warren East turnovers.   Warren East shot 45.8% from the field including one of eight from beyond the arc.   The Lady Raiders connected on three of five free throws, grabbed 32 rebounds, and scored seven points off 17 Wayne County turnovers.  

Kayla Bowlin led Wayne County with 23 points and seven assists.  Samantha Sexton added 13 points including three three point baskets.  Ashley Rainey led Warren East with 22 points and 18 rebounds.  Jordan Crain added 10 points. 

Assumption (1-4) vs. Paul L. Dunbar (OH) (2-1)

Assumption held a combined first and third quarter scoring margin of 31-4 in a 53-27 advantage over Dunbar.   Assumption shot 37% from the field including four of nine from the three point line.   The Rockets connected on nine of 16 free throws, pulled down 40 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 20 Dunbar turnovers.   Dunbar shot 23.1% from the field including one of eight from beyond the arc.   The Lady Wolverines connected on two of three free throws, grabbed 37 rebounds, and scored eight points off 13 Assumption turnovers.  

Molly Ernst led Assumption with 16 points including three three point baskets.  Amy Brutscher pulled down nine rebounds.  Kenyona Simmons led Dunbar with 18 points and 10 rebounds. 

Madisonville-North Hopkins (2-1) vs. Betsy Layne (3-3)

Madisonville-North Hopkins defeated Betsy Layne 56-50.   They shot 52.3% from the field including two of nine from the three point line.   The Lady Maroons connected on eight of 14 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 13 Betsy Layne turnovers.   Betsy Layne shot 34.7% from the field including six of 19 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Cats connected on 10 of 15 free throws, grabbed 26 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 15 Madisonville-North Hopkins turnovers.  

Tayla Foster led the victors with 23 points and nine rebounds.  Kenyatta Drake added 22 points and 11 rebounds.  Taylor Hott led Betsy Layne with 22 points.  Megan Hamilton added 18 points including five three point baskets. 

Lexington Christian Academy (5-1) vs. Montgomery County (5-0)

Montgomery County trailed 48-40 entering the final period but rallied to defeat Lexington Christian Academy by a score of 59-55.   Montgomery County shot 43.5% from the field including three of eight from the three point line.   The Lady Indians connected on 16 of 25 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 13 LCA turnovers.   Lexington Christian Academy shot 50% from the field including eight of 25 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Eagles connected on only one of nine free throws, grabbed 29 rebounds, and scored six points off 11 Montgomery County turnovers.

Christian Academy of Louisville (7-0) vs. Elizabethtown (5-0)

Madisonville-North Hopkins scored 26 points off 17 Breathitt County turnovers in a 71-58 victory over the Lady Cats .   Madisonville-North Hopkins shot 54.7% from the field including five of 15 from the three point line.   The Lady Maroons connected on eight of 13 free throws and pulled down 29 rebounds.   Breathitt County shot 51.1% from the field including four of 15 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Cats connected on eight of 11 free throws, grabbed 23 rebounds, and scored 10 points off Madisonville-North Hopkins turnovers.  

Kenyatta Drake led the victors with 26 points and 10 rebounds.  Lyndi Tedder added 20 points including five three point baskets.  Tayla Foster chipped in with 15 points and 11 rebounds.  Kendall Noble led Breathitt County with 33 points and 10 rebounds.  Brianna Deaton added 10 points.

Montgomery County (6-0) vs. Christian Academy of Louisville (8-0)  (Quarterfinal)

Montgomery County Coach Janie Robinson started the following lineup:  5-11 Sr. Elizabeth Prewitt, 5-11 Sr. Kayla Webb, 6-3 Jr. Mary Jehlik, 5-10 Jr. Annie Garland, and 5-7 Sr. Mackenzie Lee.  CAL Coach Don Rice countered with 5-11 Jr. Anna Hart, 5-11 Sr. Hannah Bowman, 6-2 Jr. Antonita Slaughter, 5-6 So. Emily Walden, and 5-10 Sr. Clair Buchanan. 

Clair Buchanan hit a three point bomb with approximately one minute left in the game to give CAL their first lead, 36-35, in a 40-35 victory over Montgomery County.   Buchanan had been zero for nine from the field before she connected on the game winner.   CAL protected the lead by connecting on their free throws down the stretch.  

CAL shot 41.7% from the field including three of 14 from the three point line.   The Lady Centurions connected on seven of 11 free throws, pulled down 20 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 18 Montgomery County turnovers.   Montgomery County shot 33.3% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Indians connected on nine of 13 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored six points off 15 CAL turnovers.  

Antonita Slaughter led CAL with 18 points.  Mary Jehlik led Montgomery County with 10 points and five rebounds.  Mackenzie Lee added seven points and five assists. 

Butler (6-1) vs. Mercy Academy (5-2)  (Quarterfinal)

Butler Coach Eddy Wilson started the following lineup:  5-10 Jr. Moriah Corey, 5-7 So. Megan Cureton, 5-10 Sr. Tiara Hopper, 5-6 So. Heather Wheat, and 5-5 Sr. Shontel Bates.  Mercy Academy Coach Mark Evans countered with 5-9 Therese Montano, 5-8 Jr. Malisa Cruz, 5-9 Sr. Catherine Montano, 5-8 So. Juliann Miller, and 5-8 Jr. Ellen Sholtes. 

Mercy raced out to a 51-30 third quarter lead on their way to a 57-46 victory over Butler.   Mercy held an 18-3 advantage in three point points.  

Mercy shot 48.9% from the field including six of 10 from the three point line.   The Jaguars connected on five of eight free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored 22 points off 24 Butler turnovers.   Butler shot 28.9% from the field including only one of 12 from beyond the arc.   The Bearettes connected on 23 of 31 free throws, grabbed 29 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 22 Mercy turnovers.  

Malisa Cruz led Mercy with 24 points and nine rebounds.  Cruz connected on six three point baskets.  5-5 So. Lauren Faris added 10 points.  5-7 Jr. Whitney Reed led Butler with 12 points and five rebounds.  Tiara Hopper added 11 points and nine rebounds. 

duPont Manual (6-0) vs. Highlands (7-0)  (Quarterfinal)

Manual Coach Stacy Pendleton started the following lineup:  5-8 So. Nicole Lauterbach, 6-2 Jr. Zakiyah Martin, 6-1 Sr. Avery Jones, 5-4 Sr. Denisha Harbison, and 5-7 Fr. April Wilson.  Highlands Coach Jaime Walz Richey countered with 5-8 Jr. Samantha Messmer, 5-8 Jr. Katie Allen, 6-0 Jr. Bekah Towles, 5-9 Sr. Mallory Adler, and 5-6 So. Allie Conner. 

Manual scored 28 points off 22 Highlands turnovers in a 77-59 victory.   Manual shot 55.6% from the field including eight of 12 from the three point line.   The Lady Crimsons connected on nine of 15 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and held a 23-8 advangtage in bench scoring.   Highlands shot 34.4% from the field including four of 13 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Bluebirds connected on 13 of 16 free throws, grabbed 36 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 17 Manual turnovers.  

Denisha Harbison led Manual with 23 points including six of six three point baskets.  Avery Jones added 16 points and eight rebounds.  5-10 So. Mechael Guess chipped in with 13 points.  Mallory Adler led Highlands with 24 points.  Allie Conner added 16 points. 

Assumption (3-4) vs. Lexington Catholic (3-3)  (Quarterfinal)

Assumption Coach Ron Ferch started the following lineup:  6-0 Jr. Molly Ernst, 5-9 Jr. Sara Minogue, 5-10 Sr. Amy Brutscher, 5-5 Jr. Claire Delahanty, and 5-7 Jr. Kayla McMahon.  Lexington Catholic Coach Tony Talbott countered with 5-11 Fr. Lexington Catholic held a 25-2 advantage in bench scoring in a 62-54 win over Assumption.   Lexington Catholic shot 35.1% from the field including eight of 21 from the three point line.   The Lady Knights connected on 14 of 16 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 22 Assumption turnovers.   Assumption shot 42% from the field including five of 10 from beyond the arc.   The Rockets connected on seven of eight free throws, grabbed 34 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 15 Lexington Catholic turnovers.  

Danielle Corbett, Maggie Wilson, and Anna Gayle Scott led Lexington Catholic with 13, 11, and 11 points respectively.   5-9 Sr. Shaneque McGhee pulled down 13 rebounds.  Molly Ernst led Assumption with 24 points including four three point baskets.  Amy Brutscher added 14 points and eight rebounds.  Sara Minogue chipped in with 10 points and seven assists.  Claire Delahanty dished out 10 assists.

Lincoln County (7-2) vs. Owensboro Catholic (6-2)

Lincoln County Coach Don Story started the following lineup:  5-10 Sr. Keira Henderson, 5-9 Jr. Nikki Bustle, 6-3 Jr. Kendra Brown, 5-9 Jr. Jessica Upchurch, and 5-5 Jr. Alissa Patterson.  Owensboro Catholic Coach Ray Zuberer countered with 5-10 8th grader Becca Greenwell, 5-9 Sr. Hannah Gerteisen, 5-6 Jr. Kaley Robertson, 5-7 Sr. Morgan Tipmore, and 5-4 Jr. Martina Riney. 

Lincoln County scored 25 points off 24 Owensboro Catholic turnovers and outscored the Lady Aces 33-7 in the second half in a 58-28 victory.   Lincoln County shot 47.9% from the field including three of 11 from the three point line.   The Lady Patriots connected on nine of 15 free throws and pulled down 33 rebounds.  Owensboro Catholic shot 22.9% from the field including two of 10 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Aces connected on 10 of 21 free throws, pulled down 28 rebounds, and scored zero points off 19 Lincoln County turnovers.  

Jessica Upchurch and Keira Henderson led Lincoln County with 16 points each.  Henderson also pulled down 12 rebounds.  Kendra Brown added nine points, six rebounds, and five blocked shots.  Becca Greenwell and 5-10 Jr. Jessica Goetz led Owensboro Catholic with nine and seven points respectively.  

Newport Central Catholic (3-4) vs. Southwestern (6-1)

Courtney Sandfoss led Newport Central Catholic with 11 points and five assists.  5-8 Sr. Michelle Stoll added eight points.  Jane chipped in with six points and eight rebounds.  Kimber Schultz pulled down 10 rebounds.  Stephanie Salyers led Southwestern with 17 points and 11 rebounds.  Danay Fothergill added 10 points. 

Elizabethtown (6-1) vs. Simon Kenton (7-1)

Elizabethtown raced out to a 27-8 lead in the second quarter on their way to a 55-47 victory over Simon Kenton.   Elizabethtown shot 54.3% from the field including five of 10 from the three point line.   The Lady Panthers connected on 12 of 18 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 11 points off 17 Simon Kenton turnovers.   Simon Kenton shot 32.2% from the field including six of 27 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Pioneers connected on three of four free throws, grabbed 30 rebounds, and scored 20 points off 24 Elizabethtown turnovers.   Simon Kenton attempted 59 shots from the field compared to 35 field goal attempts by Elizabethtown.  

Dorian Downs led Elizabethtown with 17 points including five three point baskets.  Alex Jones added 14 points and 10 rebounds.  Chelsea Tolliver led Simon Kenton with 21 points including three three point baskets. 

Sacred Heart Academy (5-1) vs. Madisonville-North Hopkins (3-2)

Sacred Heart Academy held a combined score advantage of 46-16 in the first and third periods in a 66-46 victory over Madisonville-North Hopkins.   Sacred Heart shot 46.3% from the field including two of eight from the three point line.   The Valkyries connected on 14 of 19 free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 21 points off 19 Madisonville-North Hopkins turnovers.   Madisonville-North Hopkins shot 42.2% from the field including one of seven from beyond the arc.   The Lady Maroons connected on seven of seven free throws, pulled down 25 rebounds, and scored six points off 12 Sacred Heart turnovers.  

Autumn Miller led the victors with 14 points.  Morgan Clemons added 13 points and nine rebounds.  Jackie Hafele chipped in with 10 points.  Tayla Foster led Madisonville-North Hopkins with 24 points and 10 rebounds. 

Lexington Christian Academy vs. Wayne County

Due to the forecast for icy conditions and freezing rain it was reported that the superintendent of Wayne County, in concern for the safety of the students, decided against allowing the team to travel to Lexington.

Conner (5-2) vs. Breathitt County (6-3)

Conner Coach Kim Warfield started the following lineup:  5-7 Fr. Ellory Kring, 5-8 So. Toria Fischer, 5-10 Sr. Gela Haynes, 5-6 Jr. Devin Beasley, and 5-6 Sr. Allison Long.  Breathitt County Coach Peggy Moore countered with 5-11 Sr. Brittany Haddix, 5-10 Fr. Conner pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Breathitt County by a score of 61-49.   Conner shot 45.7% from the field including five of 11 from the three point line.   The Lady Cougars connected on 14 of 19 free throws, pulled down 30 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 14 Breathitt County turnovers.   Breathitt County shot 46.5% from the field including three of 19 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Cats connected on six of seven free throws, grabbed 21 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 14 Conner turnovers.  

Allison Long led Conner with 22 points.  Gela Haynes added 14 points and six rebounds.  Kendall Noble led Breathitt County with 23 points, eight rebounds, five assists, six blocked shots, and five steals. 

Highlands (7-1) vs. Assumption (3-5)

Katie Allen led Highlands with 16 points.  Bekah Towles added 12 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocked shots.  Sr. Natalie Horner chipped in with 11 points.  Molly Ernst led Assumption with 21 points including four three point baskets.  Sara Minogue added 12 points and eight rebounds.  Amy Brutscher chipped in with nine points and 13 rebounds.

Mackenzie Lee led Montgomery County with 30 points including four three point baskets and seven rebounds.  Tiara Hopper led Butler with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Heather Wheat and 5-7 Jr. Whitney Reed added nine points each.  Reed pulled down seven rebounds.

Christian Academy of Louisville (9-0) vs. Mercy Academy (6-2)  (Semifinal)

Christian Academy of Louisville Coach Don Rice started the following lineup:  5-11 Sr. Hannah Bowman, 5-10 Jr. Allison Karst, 6-2 Jr. Antonita Slaughter, 5-6 So. Emily Walden, and 5-10 Sr. Clair Buchanan.  Mercy Academy Coach Mark Evans countered with 5-9 Therese Montano, 5-8 Jr. Malisa Cruz, 5-9 Sr. Catherine Montano, 5-8 So. Juliann Miller, and 5-8 Jr. Ellen Sholtes. 

Mercy led 49-41 early in the final quarter but CAL rallied for a 58-53 victory.   CAL went to a match-up zone and outscored Mercy 17-4 to close out the scoring.  Therese Montano , Ellen Sholtes , Catherine Montano , and Juliann Miller all fouled out late for Mercy. 

CAL shot 43.6% from the field including seven of 13 from the three point line.   The Lady Centurions connected on 17 of 25 free throws, pulled down 35 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 15 Mercy Academy turnovers.   Mercy shot 36% from the field including five of 19 from beyond the arc.   The Jaguars connected on 12 of 16 free throws, grabbed 28 rebounds, and scored 26 points off 22 CAL turnovers.  

Clair Buchanan led CAL with 23 points including six three point baskets.  5-10 Jr. Allison Karst added 13 points.  Antonita Slaughter chipped in with nine points and 10 rebounds.  Hannah Bowman recorded seven points and eight rebounds.  Malisa Cruz led Mercy Academy with 18 points including four three point baskets.  Juliann Miller added 12 points.  Catherine Montano and Therese Montano recorded nine and eight points respectively.  

duPont Manual (7-0) vs. Lexington Catholic (4-3)  (Semifinal)

Manual finally pulled away late in the game to defeat a scrappy Lexington Catholic team by a score of 60-51.   Manual outscored Lexington Catholic 18-9 in the final quarter.   Manual shot 45.2% from the field including three of eight from the three point line.   The Lady Crimsons connected on 19 of 28 free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 17 points off 25 Lexington Catholic turnovers.   Lexington Catholic shot 37.4% from the field including two of eight from beyond the arc.   The Lady Knights connected on 15 of 23 free throws, grabbed 29 rebounds, and scored 19 points off 27 Manual turnovers.  

Avery Jones led duPont Manual with 21 points and nine rebounds.  April Wilson and Denisha Harbison added 12 and nine points respectively.   Danielle Corbett and 5-6 8th grader Oney Harrison led Lexington Catholic with 12 and 11 points respectively.   Shaneque McGhee recorded six points and pulled down 12 rebounds. 

Christian Academy of Louisville (10-0) vs. duPont Manual (8-0)  (Championship)

Christian Academy of Louisville Coach Don Rice started the following lineup:  5-11 Sr. Hannah Bowman, 5-10 Jr. Allison Karst, 6-2 Jr. Antonita Slaughter, 5-6 So. Emily Walden, and 5-10 Sr. Clair Buchanan.  duPont Manual Coach Stacy Pendleton countered with 5-10 So. Mechael Guess, 5-10 Fr. Kara Wright, 6-1 Sr. Avery Jones, 5-4 Sr. Denisha Harbison, and 5-7 Fr. April Wilson. 

Manual overcame an early 16-9 deficit to defeat CAL 62-57 for the championship.   CAL actually led 43-37 in the fourth quarter but Manual, led by April Wilson's 13 points in the final quarter, roared back for the victory.   The Lady Crimson fans got a scare in the first quarter when Avery Jones went down with an injury in the opening minute of the game but was able to return in the second quarter.  

Manual shot 40% from the field including six of 14 from the three point line.   The Lady Crimsons connected on 12 of 17 free throws, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 16 Christian Academy of Louisville turnovers.   Manual held a 16-2 advantage on second chance points and a 12-0 advantage on bench scoring.   CAL shot 39.5% from the field including five of 10 from beyond the arc.   The Lady Centurions connected on 22 of 30 free throws, grabbed 27 rebounds, and scored 23 points off 18 Manual turnovers.  

April Wilson led Manual with 18 points including four three point baskets.  Avery Jones added 11 points, 10 rebounds, and four blocked shots.  5-10 So. Mechael Guess chipped in with eight points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.  Antonita Slaughter led CAL with 23 points including 12 of 14 from the free throw line.  Clair Buchanan added 14 points including four three point baskets and pulled down eight rebounds.  Allison Karst recorded 10 points.

Conclusion

Congratulations to Lexington Catholic Coach Tony Talbott and his staff for putting together such a first class event.   Also, congratulations to Coach Pendleton and the duPont Manual Lady Crimsons for capturing the championship and to Coach Rice and the Christian Academy of Louisville Lady Centurions for an excellent tourney run.  This was a formidable field with several teams capable of challenging for the state championship in March.  The individual talent on display this week was excellent with many of them likely to play well at the college level.  The stats presented in this write-up were from scorebooks and from several computer stat crews.  Although this is not necessarily official stats, the numbers should be close.
