2009 Kentucky Girls Middle School 8th Grade State Tournament

Twenty-six teams will compete or the championship this year.  All the teams will play a play-in game Saturday.  Single elimination play begins Saturday.  The championship game will be played Friday November 27th at Rupp Arena.

The teams competing for the championship this season are Crosby, North Laurel, Anderson County, AB Combs, Knox County, Stuart Pepper, McNabb, Bracken County, Lincoln County, Magoffin County, Dorton, Hopkinsville, Casey County, Beaumont, Verity, Clay County, Powell County, Corbin, LaRue County, Hazard, Wayne County, Bluegrass, McCreary County, Crawford, Whitley County, and Phelps.

Cassidy Jefferson, Jordan Wills, and Holly Brothers led Bracken County with nine, eight, and eight points respectively.   Mia McDonald led McNabb with six points.

Heidi Huffman and Spencer Sims led Lincoln County with 15 and eight points respectively.   Castle and Reed led Magoffin County with 22 and 14 points respectively.

Sara Robinson led Clay County with 10 points.  Brett-Ashley Justice led Verity with nine points.

Nikki Wells, Stephanie Knox, and Keeley Rogers led Powell County with 14, 11, and 10 points respectively.   Kayla Wilson led Corbin with 16 points.  Miranda Wilson added 12 points on four three point baskets.  Lindsey Barton chipped in with 11 points.

Anderson County Clay Birdwhistell started the following lineup:  Corrin Robinson, Alex Avritt, Eriel McKee, Destiny Stewart, and Makenzie Cann.  Whitley County countered with Chelsea Gray, Tara Davis, Kandace Craig, Brandy Smith, and Maria Johnson

Anderson County pulled away in the final quarter to defeat Whitley County 34-26.   Destiny Stewart led the rally with nine points in the final quarter.   Eriel McKee and Stewart led Anderson County with 13 and nine points respectively.   Hallie Jones and Brandy Smith led Whitley County with 10 and eight points respectively.

Conclusion

Congratulations to Anderson County for capturing the championship and also to Whitley County.  Both teams played well in the tourney and earned the right to compete for the title at Rupp Arena.
