This tournament is in its 15th year and is already rich in tradition. Past champions have been Madison Central (1995-1996), Bryan Station (1996-1997), Scott County (1997-1998, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001, 2001-2002), Dixie Heights (2002-2003), Scott County (2003-2004, 2004-2005, 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008, and 2008-2009).
Last year the Toyota Classic added a round-robin girl’ event that featured four teams. Scott County Lady Cardinals finished first in this event.
This year’s field will consist of the following teams: Paul Dunbar, Elizabethtown, Irvington (NJ), Butler, Western, Covington Catholic, Ballou (DC), and Scott County. There will also be a girls’ round-robin event featuring the following teams: Lafayette, Clay County, Fern Creek, and Scott County.
Wednesday January 20th – Day 1
Lafayette vs. Scott County (Girls)
Lafayette coach Allison Tate Denton started the following lineup: 5-9 So. Taylor Mynear, 5-4 Sr. Jameka Gillespie, 6-0 Sr. Morgan Walker, 5-3 Jr. Jariana Gillespie, and 5-7 Sr. Ali Ross. Scott County coach Steve Helton countered with 5-10 8th grader Tereka Guyn, 5-11 Sr. Madisen Webb, 5-10 Jr. Alex McKenzie, 5-7 Sr. Bronna McKee, and 5-10 Jr. Kristen Stainback.
The score was tied 20-20 at halftime but Scott County pulled away for a 51-44 victory over Lafayette. Scott County shot 40% from the field including one of six from the three point line. The Lady Cardinals connected on 10 of 16 free throws, pulled down 39 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 21 Lafayette turnovers. Lafayette shot 32.7% from the field including four of 14 from beyond the arc. The Lady Generals connected on six of nine free throws, pulled down 34 rebounds, and scored 16 points off 21 Scott County turnovers.
Kristen Stainback led Scott County with 16 points. Tereka Guyn added 15 points and eight rebounds. Madisen Webb recorded nine points, nine rebounds, and seven assists. Alex McKenzie chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds.
Ali Ross led Lafayette with 17 points including two three point baskets and pulled down eight rebounds. Jariana Gillespie added 10 points and five rebounds.

Lamont Johnson led Dunbar with21 points and 21 rebounds. Paul Jones added 18 points including two three point baskets. Bryce With recorded 12 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocked shots.
Mitchell Henry led Elizabethtown with 19 points, 12 rebounds, and five blocked shots. Chris Ulis also recorded 19 points. Cody Lane and Jamie Haire chipped in with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Blue Knights connected on nine of 19 from the free throw line, pulled down 38 rebounds, and scored 18 points off 21 Butler turnovers.
Thomas Blakemore led Butler with 15 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Allen and 5-11 Sr. Raymond Saunders added nine points each.
Shakur Edwards led Irvington with 14 points including two three point baskets. Geneve Montfleury added 13 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots.

Ballou defeated Elizabethtown by a score of 69-59. Ballou shot 45.6% from the field including only one of 13 from the three point line. The Knights connected on six of 10 free throws, pulled down 43 rebounds, and scored 15 points off 16 Elizabethtown turnovers. Elizabethtown shot 42.4% from the field including two of 12 from beyond the arc. The Panthers connected on seven of 11 free throws, pulled down 32 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 15 Ballou turnovers.
Donte Thomas led Ballou with 16 points, six rebounds, and five assists. Christian Leach added 14 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Marquis Gentry chipped in with 11 points. Eugene Watkins recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.

Paul Dunbar shot 37% from the field including one of six from the three point line. The Bulldogs connected on three of nine free throws, pulled down 33 rebounds, and scored 13 points off 23 Covington Catholic turnovers.
Jake Thelen led Covington catholic with 24 points and seven rebounds. Trevor Wellbrock added 14 points and seven rebounds.

Fern Creek shot 23.6% from the field including two of 14 from beyond the arc. The Lady Tigers connected on eight of 11 free throws, pulled down 44 rebounds, and scored 12 points off 17 Lafayette turnovers.
Ali Ross led Lafayette with 19 points including two three point baskets and recorded nine rebounds, five assists, and six steals. Jameka Gillespie added 10 points including two three point baskets.
Teonia McCune led Ferns Creek with nine points, eight rebounds, and three blocked shots. Kierra Moore added nine points and seven rebounds. Kristin Baker pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Conclusion
Conclusions to the organizers for putting together another excellent field and to the Scott County Cardinals for capturing their twelfth Toyota Classic Championship in 15 years. Also congratulations to the Scott County Lady Cardinals for finishing first in their division. The Toyota Classic organizers continue to send the right message with the recognition of juniors and seniors who have maintained a cumulative average of 3.0 or better. This year 37 student athletes were recognized for their academic accomplishments.
