The 13th Annual Rick Bolus’ High Potential® Basketball Showcase Mini-Camp (Girls) was held in Georgetown, Kentucky at Georgetown College. This year's camp also included a junior division.
The camp director for this camp was Rick Bolus with thirty-seven years experience in the basketball business. Rick Bolus started the Rick Bolus High Potential® Basketball Recruiting Service in 1973. Mr. Bolus’ newsletters not only reach the desks of numerous college coaches nationwide, but also several all-star game directors. He has also coached girls' basketball, conducted girls' camps, and ran women's coaching clinics over the years.
A camp report will be made available via internet to almost 2,000 women’s basketball college coaches in the United States in early August. The camp features speakers on recruiting, academics, and basketball. Each player participates in five games over the two-day period. All players receive equal playing time as substitutions are done by the clock. There are fundamentals stations, team practice sessions, optional competition contests, and a written evaluation from the camper's league coach. The camp director is at camp both days observing each player's performance daily. A doctor is on call at all times and a certified trainer is at camp around the clock.
There were 146 players present at this camp. There were players from Kentucky, Nebraska, Indiana, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri, Texas, Pennsylvania, and Japan. They were placed on sixteen teams in three divisions. The North Division consisted of Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, and Missouri. The South Division consisted of North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Utah. The Junior Division consisted of Wisconsin, Wyoming, Vermont, and West Virginia. The addition of a Junior Division was highly successful this year with a lot of promising young talent. There was also several talented young players who chose to "play-up" at the High School Division.
5-5 8th grader Alex Martin (Highland Middle School/Louisville, KY) was named Junior Division Camp MVP and 5-7 7th grader Tyana Robinson (Guion Creek Middle/Indianapolis, IN) was named the Junior Division Camp Runner-Up MVP. 5-3 7th grader Kaci Currens (Anderson Middle/Lawrenceburg, KY) was named Top Shooter and 6-0 7th grader Katie Simon (Donnell Middle/Findlay, OH) was named Top Rebounder. Team "Wisconsin" went 5-0 and captured the Junior Division tourney title.
The Camp MVP for the High School Division was 5-2 Sr. Rachel Allen (Northeast/Clarksville, TN) who impressed with her speed and ability to score. 5-8 Sr. Candace Morton (Henry Clay/Lexington, KY) was named Camp Runner-Up MVP and displayed an excellent all-around game. 5-7 Jr. April Wilson (Manual/Louisville, KY) was named Top Underclassman and is a pure point guard. 5-4 Jr. Kara Taulbee (Conner/Hebron, KY) was named Top Shooter and can light it up from downtown. 6-3 Sr. Sian House (Murray/Murray, KY) was named Top Rebounder. Team "North Carolina", coached by Mark Clinkenbeard, finished 5-0 and captured the South Division title.
Some of the younger players who chose to "play-up" at the High School Division impressed, including 5-9 8th grader Alexis Brewer (LaRue County/Hodgenville, KY), 5-9 Fr. Kacie Juday (Tipton/Tipton, IN), 5-10 7th grader Erin Boley (T.K. Stone Middle/Elizabethtown, KY), 5-11 Fr. Makenzie Cann (Anderson County/Lawrenceburg, KY), 6-1 Fr. Kandace Craig (Whitley Co./Williamsburg, KY), 5-5 8th grader Deja Turner (Holy Cross/Covington, KY), 5-6 7th grader Anovia Byars (Paris Middle/Paris, KY), and 5-5 6th grader Natalie Collins (Ramsey/Louisville, KY).
There were excellent players at each class level including rising junior 5-10 Jr. Jenna Crittendon (Ryle/Union, KY) who is an excellent wing player with athelticism and who possesses the ability to score in a variety of ways. 5-5 So. Kelah Eldridge (Letcher Central/Whitesburg, KY) continues to improve and can light it up from beyond the arc. While it is impossible to mention every player here, many other players impressed with their ability, work ethic, and attitudes. Also a shout out to the younger girls who at times gave up inches in height and years of experience but showed tremendous heart and effort.
As mentioned before, a full camp report will be made available to almost 2,000 women’s basketball college coaches in early August by the camp director. While the staff was well pleased with this year’s camp, every effort will be made to improve the camp to make future versions even better.
