Notes
The young ladies from Assumption High School had an impressive run on Saturday. They played on the team designated Team 3 and won their games by scores of 80-50, 72-45, and 92-71 for an average victory margin of 26 ppg. The members of the team were:
Caroline Deeley 5-6 Fr.
Becca Durbin 5-7 Jr.
Katie Friedrich 5-9 So.
Megan Johnson 5-9 So.
Kelsey Kaiser 5-11 So.
Nora Kiesler 6-6 8th grader
Erin Mullen 5-6 So.
Dee Dee Sliter 5-8 So.
Alyx White 5-4 So.
Becca Durbin, Katie Friedrich, and Dee Dee Sliter all were named to the all tournament team with Katie Friedrich being named tournament MVP.
Rick Bolus also mentioned Nora Kiesler as one of the impressive 8th graders playing in this event.
……and youth must be served especially on the girls’ side
It seems like each year you see many girls in the seventh and eighth grades logging quality minutes and even starring at he high school level. There were several girls in the seventh and eighth grades on the rosters at today’s event. 6-1 8th grader Amanda Bailey (Benton North Marshall Middle School KY), 5-7 7th grader Maurissa Brown (Covington Holmes Middle School KY), 6-6 8th grader Nora Kiesler (Louisville Assumption KY), 5-7 8th grader Alie Mills (Walton Walton Verona KY), 5-4 7th grader Hannah Niemeyer (Independence Summit View KY), 6-0 8th grader Christessica Priddy (Munfordville Hart County KY), 5-5 8th grader Tyler Smith (Ludlow KY), 5-8 8th grader Deja Turner (Covington KY), and 5-4 8th grader Torianna Wofford (Ludlow KY).
Deja Turner and Maurissa Brown were named to the all tournament team and Rick Bolus noted Nora Kiesler and Amanda Bailey turned in impressive performances. Expect several of these girls to continue to improve and compete for quality playing time in the future.
Boys
There were several excellent players displaying their skills during this event. 6-8 Sr. Trey Williams (Greenup Greenup County KY) impressed today and was named the tournament MVP for the boys tournament. There was some excellent size among some of the players named to the all tournament team and noted impressive performances by Rick Bolus. Six of the 14 players mentioned were 6-5 or taller including 6-5 Jr. Charles Jacobs (Louisville Western KY). 6-8 Sr. Trey Williams (Greenup Greenup County KY), 6-8 So. Brock Kiesler (Louisville St. Xavier KY), 6-5 Jr. Wesley Dowell (Brandenburg Meade County KY), 6-6 Jr. Adam Hendrix (Radcliff North Hardin KY), and 6-7 Jr. Jauan Akins (Radcliff North Hardin KY).
Girls
There was an excellent mixture of seasoned performances as well as a very talented group of young players with bright futures. The girls from Assumption high School played together as a team and had impressive performances both as a team and as individuals. 5-9 So. Katie Friedrich (Louisville Assumption KY) was named MVP for the girls tournament). 5-9 Sr. Rachel Hodge (Morganfield Union County KY), 5-7 Jr. Kim Mingus (Louisville Holy Cross KY), and 5-10 Jr. Kaylyn Cecil (Elizabethtown KY) among others impressed today.
The young players have already been mentioned and 5-8 8th grader Deja Turner (Covington Holmes KY) fits into both categories. She is a seasoned varsity performer despite her age and I have also seen her play at the AAU level. Miss Turner is a “quiet assassin” who can put the points on the board as well as setting the table for her teammates.
Conclusion
It is very competitive in the basketball world today with all the camps, one day shoot-outs, and numerous AAU and other organizations events as well as the other sports available today. However the organizizers of this event does an excellent job making this a valuable and enjoyable event for the fans and participants.
